1983 Volkswagen GTi Callaway Turbo

509

As Yogi Berra once famously said, “It’s like deja-vous all over again”. What are the odds of two 1983 Volkswagen GTi Callaway Turbos coming up for sale within a week of each other 30 years later? Not good. But perhaps it’s time to play the lottery, because here we go again! If last week’s stunning $17,750 1983 GTi wasn’t the right color to peak your interest, perhaps today’s example can color you a bit more red. Today’s example is not nearly as pristine as the earlier example with the best part of ten times the miles, but it still looks like a pretty slick package overall

Holy “Caps Lock”, Batman. This car has some obvious needs compared with the other two GTis we’ve featured in the past week. There are pieces missing, the steering wheel and front seats aren’t correct, the rear spoiler isn’t original but looks clean (similar to the Mk.2 design), and it appears that the interior overall could use a good cleaning. It’s not the cleanest build I’ve seen, but overall presents pretty well and crucially the floors look to be pretty solid, so it could be a great starting point to either further modify or revert the car towards a more-stock state. One thing I’m not a huge fan of is the wheels; I’d probably try to get some of the larger Fifteen52 snowflake replicas on there, or perhaps some BBS RA wheels. Get a set of period Recaros, a GTi steering wheel and some odds and ends, and I bet this is a fun car to drive!

Here are some wheels I found on Ebay:

And some seats from a later GTi which could probably work with some modification:

Pricing is no reserve, so we’ll have to see where it ends up, but my guess is like the 1984 Barn Find GTi a few days ago it should end in the $5,000 – $7,000 range.

1985 Volkwagen Scirocco

509

The last few months has seen some crazy expensive A1 Volkswagens, so it’s refreshing to see a neat driver that is in the stratosphere. Today’s example started life as a plain-jane 8V 1.8 Scirocco in Titian Red Metallic, and probably would be higher valued if it had remained that way; but for me, I like what the owner has done with this car. Gone are the diving board bumpers and quad-sealed beams, replaced by the more desirable and slicker-looking European units. Also gone is the slightly anemic 1.8 8V, replaced by a Techtonics Tuning 2.0 16V. Round it out with a fresh set of BBSs, and this is a slick package for sure:

509

Year: 1985
Model: Scirocco
Engine: 2.0 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed
Mileage: 114,600 mi
Price: $5,500 Buy It Now

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1985 Volkswagen Scirocco on eBay

1985 8v Scirocco with Techtonics 2.0 16v engine installed in mid-90s. Three-owner car. We’ve babied and cherished it since June 1990.
–Complete maintenance records since 1990
–New tires (see photos): Yokohama S-drive 195/50R-15
–BBS 15-inch wheels
–Euro bumpers and headlights
–16v body kit, with EXTRA body kit
–Techtonics exhaust
–Bilstein shocks with Neuspeed lowering springs

A few dings and scratches (see photos). Paint is in beautiful shape. Small burn on backseat from previous owner (see photo). (We are not smokers and car does NOT smell like smoke.) Cloth interior of the sunroof has some staining from inside sunroof (see photo). Everything works.

It’s still a blast to drive, and we’re sad to see her go, but need to downsize our car collection.

On Sep-25-13 at 12:36:10 PDT, seller added the following information:

Addition on 9.25, based on query from potential buyer: There is no rust. Hasn’t been driven in winter, and it’s been garaged most of its life. The clutch was replaced when we dropped in the 2.0L engine, in the mid-90s. It did not need replacing, but we figured we might as well replace it with the engine out. The transmission is original and unopened. We have not even replaced the original shift bushings, no need to.

If you like mid-80s VW products, it doesn’t get much better than a Scirocco set up like this. Titan Red Metallic might not be everyone’s favorite, but in this guise the car looks like a 7/8th scale Quattro, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Thankfully, it’s not 7/8ths the complexity or price of a 1985 Quattro, and in it’s current form it’s likely quicker in everything put the snow. With maintenance records since 1990, a solid build, desirable Euro pieces and a great motor choice, this is a great package in my opinion. Better yet, it’s affordable as a driver – $5,500 seems like a steal for all this door-wedge goodness. Buy it now and enjoy trips up the tach for years to come, and I doubt it will lose any value if properly maintained!

Afternoon Accessories: Korman Schnitzer 2002 Widebody Kit

509

Some of the coolest 2002s were the Schnitzer wide body race cars run in the 1960s and 1970s. Schnitzer started as a small race team but ultimately won the German touring car championship in a 2002ti. The widebody 2002 has been the signature of Schnitzer and they look perfect hunkered down low over gold BBS magnesium wheels. If you’re looking to build a crazy 2002, look no further:

Hi I am selling a new Korman Fiberglass Schnitzer Widebody Kit. I never used it and it has never been molded to a car. All I did was clamp it up to see how it looked and it looked good.It is not bolt on product. You can find details at Korman Autoworks. This is a big package, 23x28x69 inches. Its a good deal, half price. I paid 800 for this kit. IF YOU WOULD LIKE IT SHIPPED YOU CAN ARRANGE SHIPPING.

With a few days to go, bidding is low on this new set of fiberglass flares. Anyone who has done any fiberglass work will tell you that buying the flares is just the tip of the iceberg, but none-the-less this is a neat setup for a cool ’02 build on a budget.

1983 Audi Quattro

509

It’s been a Quattro kind of month at GCFSB. Perhaps that’s because our editor, Paul, put me in the driver’s seat and I like Audis a whole lot, but there have also been some great examples that have popped up for sale recently. First was a clean and rare Stone Grey Metallic 1985 Quattro, then our reader ride 20V turbo Quattro in Mars Red, followed by the splendid rally-prepped but unconventional RS4 powered Quattro. Today is another modified Quattro, but this one is a bit less extreme. I was initially excited to see this car pop up a few weeks ago, but there were no good photos and the car was removed. Well, it’s back, this time with good photos to show us one of the signature colors for the Quattro – Gobi Beige over Chocolate leather:

My humblest apologies to all who viewed this ad previously. Much to my embarrassment, the pictures were wholly inadequate and failed to give anyone seriously considering the car a chance to fairly examine it. Hopefully the new improved and larger photos will give you a better idea.Once again, my sincerest apologies. Gobi Beige with dark chocolate brown leather interior. 120K original miles. The car has resided in Nevada, Washington and California. I am the third owner. Original turbo, Euro headlights and pushed in bumpers, newer 1987 slanted grill update the look of this car and subtly shave few a few years off its appearance. Ronal alloy wheels, lowered full 2Bennett adjustable coil over suspension and performance chip has transformed this beauty from an antiquated tractor to a fully modern car with rally like handling. Brakes have been upgraded with slotted rotors and A4 calipers. All belts (including timing belt) CV joints and hoses were replaced a couple of years ago with little mileage since. AC works but needs to be recharged. The interior is in nice condition, upgraded later model dash and 2Bennett instrument binnacle with turbo boost, oil pressure and water temperature gauges allow you to monitor and keep track of your car as you are driving in varying conditions. All electrical relays have been beefed up with the addition of the stronger euro headlights. A toggle switch that can manually activate the radiator fan when the engine temperature goes up on those hot summer days and turbo timer have also been added. This car to my knowledge has never been raced. When I first purchased the car I had hopes of some day driving on the track after witnessing these cars eat all of their competition alive at the Long beach Grand Prix in 1983. Alas after purchasing this car in 2000, while in good condition, it took a number more years and a lot more money to bring this car in to the modern age. (I am not a mechanic) My goal was to drive and enjoy the car when and where I pleased and make it as bullet proof and modern as possible with out destroying its pedigree. To this end I believe I have attained this goal. Many UR Quattros that are still on the road have been highly modified. Mine has been modernized to be a reliable and drivable car. Always garaged and professionally maintained. Have most of the receipts documenting the history of this car since I assumed ownership.

Buyer responsible for vehicle pickup or arrangement & cost of shipping. $500.00 deposit required 48 hours after winning bid, 72 hours if winning bid is over a weekend. Full payment due at car pickup. All payments to be made via deposit to Paypal.

2Bennett is pretty famous for building some incredible Quattros, and while this isn’t one of their most outrageous creations it appears well modified. The coil over setup is similar to what I use in my GT and well engineered. The car’s electrics have also been upgraded and the car was chipped, helping both dependability and performance. The dash and grill have been updated to later designs which look quite clean, though a nice set of Euro bumper covers would really complete the look with those H1/H4 Euro lights. All of this has been done to make the car a solid driver, which it appears to be. The only downside is the typical “A/C needs a recharge” line, but it’s nice that the system is in tact as many pull it during modifications. Value has been all over the map on these Quattros as of late; the 1985 was well bought at $15,000 but the 20V Quattro was even a better deal sneaking in under $10,000. Bidding is already strong on this well-presented example; as of writing it has reached $10,000 with 6 days to go. Even at $15,000, these 10V Quattros are a steal compared to what E30 M3s are bringing in value. We’ll have to watch the final value on this car but it may reach the high end of the 10V Turbo market on these cars!

Wednesday Wheels: Quattro Audi Favorites

Much like Volkswagen, Audi went from a fairly conservative wheel lineup through 1995 to some of the best looking wheels on the market. Consequently, there have been countless knockoffs that have sprouted up at budget prices; they always look appealing price wise, but never seem to perfectly replicate the original wheels. For my money and car, I’d always choose the OEM options over the replicas, which means looking to the used wheel market instead of brand new wheels – luckily, there are lots of folks who like to remove their high-quality great looking wheels for something…well, not OEM. Take a look at today’s offerings from Audi then:

The RS4 and RS6 wheels are undoubtedly one of the most knocked-off designs, and poor quality versions adorn everything from budget beater A4s to Golfs. Audi even knocked off it’s own wheel, with the “Celebration” wheel that appeared on both the A4 and S8, but the real deal big-offset wheels are the ones to get if you can fit them. These are great looking wheels with only a light amount of damage at a great price. Looking for something a little better and more cutting edge? How about these S5/RS4 wheels:

Big, big, big. These wheels are aggressive and great looking. They really help to set the S5 apart from the competition, and look fantastic dressing up earlier S models. Speedline manufactured these wheels so they’re assured to be high quality. A bit too aggressive? How about a set of the popular S4 and S5 “Peelers”:

Year: 2012
Model: S5 S-line “Peelers”

I have a nearly brand new set of 19″ OEM Audi factory SLINE speedline wheels for sale that were recently removed from a Audi S5. The 2008 forward A5 and S5 vehicles use a lower offset (33mm) hence these wheels will fit the RS4 and RS6 vehicles as well. Additionally the Q5 uses a 33mm offset so these are perfect for Q5 as well. These wheels are a great way to update/upgrade your car while improving the appearance and increasing the value of your car. OEM Audi center caps will be included.

Wheels: 9X19, offset is 33mm

The wheels are in excellent condition with no curb scrapes. They have the original OEM factory “hyper-silver” finish and have not been refinished. There are a few tiny little marks simply from moving/storing them but they are near mint. Bolt pattern is 5X112 and the offset is 33mm. I receive a substantial fedex shipping discount which I pass onto you so shipping will be between $30 -$35 per wheel within the U.S. and if outside the U.S. please contact me. If you need the wheels sooner don’t hesitate to contact me. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me. If you want to see them in Newport Beach, CA please contact me. Free local pickup.

These wheels are also pretty aggressive but a tad more understated than the split RS wheels. The “Peeler” design has appeared now on all of the S and RS variants, and even has been slightly modified and reborn on the Golf R in the “Talledega”. Honestly, they all look great. Like the last set, they are Speedline made so high quality. These appear to be as close to new as possble, so it’ll be interesting to see where they end up. Too big for your roads? How about some evergreen Avus wheels:

Year: 2005-2007

These are a perrenial favorite amongst Audi folks, and appear on many earlier models. There are several different versions of the Avus wheel (I count 6, I believe) but they’re all great in their own ways. They’ll dress them up any older big-body Audi you can fit them on, and even some Volkswagens. Tonal manufactured these wheels and they’re fairly high quality. These appear to be in pretty good condition overall but are a tad bit pricey honestly, I’d hold out for a set for a few hundred dollars less.

Which are your favorites?

Forgotten 44s – 1987 Porsche 944S and 1989 Porsche 944 2.7

509

If you want a water-cooled, front engined Porsche collectable, there are several bulletproof standbys to look at. There’s of course the always popular 944 Turbo and Turbo S, a performance bargain that’s sure not to last much longer. Then there’s the curvy 968 and it’s lesser appreciated brother, the 944 S2. Enthusiasts in the know love them and seek out clean examples that challenge and exceed Turbo pricing. Those on a budget or less interested in the box-flared 44s look towards the short production 924S – a hidden gem of affordable Porsche ownership. Heck, even the lowly 924 Turbo has a cult following, as do the niche models like the 924 Carrera GT and GTS. But for your hard-earned money, there are two very rare models that 944 enthusiasts seem to forget. These models are slightly more affordable than their more-sought after brethren, but as the market climbs it may just be these lesser known models that appreciate more. These models are the 1987-1988 944 S 16V and the 1989 only 944 2.7. Today there are two clean examples, one of each model, on Ebay. Let’s start with the 16 Ventiler:

This Porsche is a beauty and a rare find.

This 1987 Porsche 944 S comes with a clean CarFax and AutoCheck Report. We offer Nationwide Shipping as well. For more pics and information, please visit us at www.AutoByDesigns.com

Despite being at an Ebay dealer, this car appears to have records to trace it’s maintenance history. The white over grey is a great combination in my mind. With the special “S” alloys, these cars stand a little apart from the regular 944 look, though they miss the Turbo-look body kit of the S2. Some might not like that, but the earlier look of the 944s is a tad bit lighter if not as clean. The 16V motor was a treat, and received a host of upgrades over the standard 944 – magnesium engine bits, different transmission, brakes, computers, suspension and a 190hp set these cars apart and slotted them nicely between the 944/924S and 944 Turbo. With only about 3300 1987 Ss and 8000 overall imported to the U.S., they’re not quite as rare as the later S2s but more rare than the Turbo or 944. Looking for something a little less common, then? How about this 1989 944 2.7:

509

The 1989 944 was the last of the breed. While the Turbo and S2 would carry over for a bit longer until the launch of the 968, the last of the 8Vs received a few upgrades as it’s swan song. Chief among these was the bump in displacement to 2.7 liters, a net of only a few horsepower over the 2.5 but a jump in torque that made the 2.7 more fun to enjoy than the earlier cars heading out of corners. Guards Red over black is a standby with 1980s Porsches, so perhaps this one floats your boat:

509

Year: 1989
Model: 944
Engine: 2.7 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed manual

1989 Porsche 944 NA. Guards Red with black leather interior, 5 spd, sunroof, cold a/c, am/fm cassette. The car has been well maintained and I have of the maintaince records since I bought it in 2007and also from the previous owner. There is over 10 years of documented maintenance history. Engine runs strong and clean. Paint is in good condition. all lines clean and straight. Car is driven daily to work and appointments. Serious inquiries only. (954) 214-4560.

Like the S, this car seems like a good deal with records available. Either way, for a pinch under $9,000 you can jump into a lower mile, maintained classic Porsche. They’re cheaper to run than their flat-6 and V8 counterparts, and while neither is as exciting as the Turbo or S2 models both will surely give you smiles down the road. If it were my money, I’d sport for the 944S and enjoy a few trips to redline, plus I like the stealthy white/grey color combo. There are countless “special versions” of the water cooled front engine Porsches, but these both are great drivers that you could hold onto and will likely appreciate – both in value and in driving experience!

Which would you choose?

My wife used to laugh at how overactive the fuel warning lights are on both Volkswagen and Audi products; the V8 Quattro I owned would warn you with nearly 100 miles of range of your imminent fuel shortage. But of course at Autobahn speeds, at last few gallons can be gobbled up in minutes, not hours, so having an additional 10 gallons of fuel on board could be the difference between a large fine and a fine day motoring!

Cheap? Nope, but it’s a pretty rare detail to come across. I could sure see this finishing off a M-Technic 325i convertible or Euro-spec white E28. What do you think – awesome period detail or horrible tuning fail?

Tuner Tuesday Part 2: 2009 BMW M5 6 Speed Dinan

509

This 2009 BMW M5 isn’t really a full Dinan model, but rather a desirable car which has undergone some factory-approved Dinan modifications. Purists rejoiced when the manual option was re-added to the M5, but few seem to come up for sale. This particular model looks just about showroom fresh in metallic black hearkening back to it’s Grandfather E28. But what resides under the hood of this monster is decidedly not from an E28; with nearly double the cylinders and double the horsepower, these M5s will and can take on just about anything you can bring to it. The manual replaces the jerky-at-low-speeds and harsh shifting (not to mention expensive to service) SMG transmission, making the black interior that much more inviting:

EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF A WELL CARED FOR M5, 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION, ALL DINAN ENHANCEMENTS PURCHASED AND INSTALLED AT BMW OF BRIDGEPORT TOTALING IN EXCESS OF $11,000. To me these cars still seem like they just arrived on the market, so it’s amazing to me that they’re priced below $40,000 now. For mid-range 3 series money, this is a lot more car and a lot more special than run of the mill 3er. If you really want to announce your presence in the office park, the Dinan exhaust will do that quite nicely for you. Long term the 6 speed manual is the option I’d choose. This car looks well kept and dealer serviced, so there shouldn’t be any surprises of any sort except for the face on that Porsche 911 Turbo driver as you out accelerate them. Downsides? Like all M5s, there don’t seem to be many – this is truly a car for most occasions!

2002 BMW M3

509

If there’s one thing that I really love it’s rare colors of already unique cars. I’m not even sure why the rare colors appeal to me so much, but I just love seeing neat German rides in something other than silver, white or black. In the case of the E46 M3, that means my favorite by far is Phoenix Yellow, but that’s not the most rare color on E46 M3s. No, there were some individuals who decided that the color pallet offered by BMW just wasn’t enough; this particular M3 was specified by the owner in the E36 shade of Estoril Blue. Original idea? Well, not really, but boy the results are good. Take a look at this Easter Egg:

Why you would go through the effort of buying the beautiful BBS CSL 19″ wheels and painting them dirty is beyond me, but like so many other things, it’s not all about me. I’d immediately refinish those gems back to the original silver as I think it would fit the car a little better. This car was mildly modified with exhaust and some blackouts, and looks to have Alcantara seats. Luckily for my bank account, it also has the SMG transmission which rules it out of ownership for me, but if you’re interested in a track ride this could be a good deal. At $17,500 with 77,000 miles it seems pretty appropriately priced and would set you apart from the rest of the E46 M3 crowd!
