1980 Volkswagen Scirocco

When talking about the Volkswagen Scirocco, most enthusiasts seem to forget the first generation and concentrate on the more angular Mk2 that was designed in-house by Volkswagen. Perhaps that is due in part to it not being the best performing car, or more likely because most succumbed to rust far too early. Despite not being very old, in the “everything must be a straight line” 80s the Giugiaro design quickly looked dated. Age has proven the merit of the design, however, and in my opinion it has matured much more gracefully than the Mk2 and many of the styling clues reappeared in the Corrado. Still, it’s fairly rare to find a clean original Scirocco, and that’s why it’s especially pleasing to see one pop up on the market, like today’s stealthy black 1980:

Well maintained and cared for Scirocco Mk1. I’m 2nd owner and have had it 26 years. Always starts and drives amazing. Always garaged, never seen winter. 88k miles. Only occasionally driven the last 10 years. Have had 7 watercooled VWs but never sold this one! I am now up to 6 cars so it’s time to thin out the fleet.

• Lost the little noise clips for the front brake pads so they rattle on bumps.
• Some cracks in the dash.


The owner of this car has been committed to it for quite some time, and I appreciate not only his dedication keeping it alive, but also a series of tasteful modifications. The engine should be a pretty serious upgrade over the stock unit, and it has some substantial running gear upgrades to deal with the extra power. At a reported 1950 pounds, it is sure to be entertaining on the back roads. The period mesh wheels aren’t my favorite, but certainly look unique on the car. The best addition has to be the great looking Euro-market bumpers. It’s nice to see the owner kept a most, if not all, of the items he removed for lightness, and they’re included in the sale.

I expect this car will probably fetch between $8,000 to $10,000 given what it is, and it may even go higher. That’s an awful lot of money for an old modified Volkswagen, but this is a pretty rare example of such a beautiful car and it’s probably worth it. Given that the less desirable (in my mind) Mk2 models are selling above $10,000 now, it may even be a bit of a deal for a classic design. So, at that price, what do you do with this car? You find your nearest back road and enjoy the ride, that’s what you do! When you’re done wringing its neck on those roads, park it near a window at your local coffee spot, order up an espresso, sit back and soak in what a beautiful design Mr. Giugiaro penned. These cars are sure to continue to appreciate over the next few years.


1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Probably like a lot of people out there, I have a neighbor with a Karmann Ghia sitting in his driveway, rotting away. It’s a sad sight that I walk past everyday. I’ve asked him what he’s doing with it and like many, he plans to rebuild it “someday.” All too often, though, “someday” never comes and these project cars change hands – the lucky ones eventually may be rebuilt and live to see another day, but many fade into a distant rusty memory. Occasionally, though, you find someone who’s “someday” has already come and gone and they’re looking to move on. Such is the case with today’s Karmann Ghia, a nicely resto-modded red example:

Up for sale is our very special 1970 Volkswagen (VW) Karmann Ghia. This car has a lot of sentimental value for my wife and me. It was the car we built and drove off on our wedding day. This car was completely rebuilt from the ground up. It had been in storage for over thirteen years and a few years back my uncle and I took on the task. Not only is it special because it was a family project completed by my wife, myself (Gulf-War Veteran), and it was also worked-on by my uncle who is a disabled mechanic (One missing arm). We are only the second family to have owned this car and it is solid. I have driven this car all over the state of Florida without any trouble whatsoever. Unfortunately due to rising medical bills and all other problems that come with life, we need to sell the car in order to maintain more important things.

Not long ago I had a new engine completed and installed. The new engine has less than 1,000 miles, and it does not leak a drop of oil, and it turns on without any trouble. If you have not noticed or are not familiar with these cars, notice that I have tried to keep the car looking as much as possible to earlier model Ghias. I have changed the large front turn signals to late 60’s model nipple turn signals. I have also omitted the large rear square reflectors and the dash has been redone. I took off the lower black padding and the wood grain sticker that used to surround the dashboard. All of the padding holes have been sealed and the dash painted the same body color.

While you are looking at these pictures keep in mind that we built this car to drive on a daily basis and enjoy it, not just keep it as a trailer queen. It does not have Air Conditioning (AC) but I did place a fan that resembles an AC unit and blows hard. Whatever minor flaws the car has are not very notable on it, so feel confident you are getting a good car. I will welcome any independent person to come look over the car. I have been around Karmann Ghias since 1986.

While not the best driving car the world has seen, the Karmann Ghia offered boatloads of style at a budget price. It may not have been a sports car like its Porsche cousins, but if an alien landed in front of a Karmann Ghia parked next to a late 356, you’d have a hell of a time explaining why the Porsche is worth five to ten times what the Volkswagen is. Today’s model is a perfect example of how it’s much easier to buy a car that’s been restored than to try to do it yourself. Sure, you could buy a cheaper car and spend a bunch making it right, but unless you have a very different vision than what this car is, this is a better and cheaper way to get there quickly.

The seller not only has a great story to go with the car, but also shows genuine love and, at least in my mind, did all of the right things to make this Ghia stand out. It looks splendid in red with tan interior, and while it looks good enough to pop into a show I’m glad it’s a driver and can be used. Aside from changing the steering wheel, I’d like to know how many miles are on the chassis, although I doubt that would be a deal breaker. The seller undoubtedly has much more money into the car than the $12,000 asking price even without counting the sweat equity. Top it off with a set of stories that will captivate the crowd at the local car event when they ask where you got it, and you’ve got yourself a well bought classic.


2007 Audi RS4

Try though they might, the fast Audi sedans offered to the U.S. market always seemed a step behind their competition from Munich. It was a pretty standard pattern; the new S4 would come out just in time to keep up with the previous generation M3. That all changed when Audi launched the RS4 and took the fast executive market into new territory. With 420 horsepower – nearly 100 more than the outgoing M3 – the RS4 was simply a revelation, bringing the small fast sedan market into speeds that would shame supercars from only a generation ago. Revving the sonorous V8 to the stratosphere results in auditory bliss that few cars can match. The RS4 even looked the part, a perfect blend of aggressive style coupled with understated fury that made the car say “Go ahead, just try it” to that Ferrari, while still being practical enough to shuttle four people up a snowy incline in comfort. Like most of these performance sedans, prices tend to fall quickly once they’re no longer the “it” item and the warranty expires. This leads to the opportunity to get a lightly used super sedan for a fraction of the original purchase price, like this Daytona Grey example today:

With a heavy heart, I am selling my 2007 Audi RS4. It is a fantastic car and still runs perfectly, but I am moving to San Francisco and I don’t want burden myself with a stick shift there.

History: bought the car from the dealership in 2007 (had a few thousand miles on it from being used by the dealer, but I am the first owner, technically). Title is totally clear, and I have it in hand. No liens or anything on it.


Make no mistake, the RS4 is a serious performance car, and consequently, it will require a strict diet of fairly expensive maintenance. Chief among these concerns is the inevitable carbon buildup in the motor; generally the result of not being driven hard enough or with high enough octane. It’s something that seems pretty common and can be fixed, but figure you’re going to have to shell out around $1,000 to have it fixed when it occurs, and may have to do it again depending on how long you own the car. The car looks to be in good shape, but a few things would give me pause; first, it appears it was a demo car for the dealer for a few thousand miles. To me, having seen a fair amount of dealer rides take place, this means the car was pushed hard early in life. Second, the photos in the listing aren’t stellar and it’s difficult to judge the wear on items like the interior. Still, maintenance is up to date, the car has new tires and brakes, and even comes with a set of snow wheels and tires.

This car is placed in the middle of the RS4 price range, and as such with the maintenance items just performed, seems appropriately priced. Personally I’d hold out for my favorite color Sprint Blue even if it meant paying a bit more; but Daytona Grey was the most popular color on these cars in the U.S., and this one will surely please the next buyer who has been dreaming of that 8,000 RPM song for the last six years.


1998 Porsche 911 Turbo Ruf Conversion

Last week, we reviewed a beautiful white 1998 993 Twin Turbo converted to Ruf Turbo R specifications. They say lightning never strikes twice, but Ruf has never been one to listen to convention or limitations. Surely the most elite of the German tuners, Ruf automobiles demand a premium over their already expensive Porsche cousins. While a “normal” 993 Twin Turbo will set you back around $60,000 to $70,000, the white lighting we showed last week was asking $110,000 despite not being an original Ruf. That’s a serious amount of “extra” over the standard car – so much so, that you could nearly buy two! However, the most valuable aspect of the Ruf cars is, and has always been, the motors they have developed. Unlike the white car, this silver example does not appear to have the valuable motor swap, but does sport the same suspension and body kit, along with a grab to the Porsche parts bag for the Turbo S rear wing. In comparison to the white car, then, this car is more of a replica without the motor.

For $35,000 dollars less, I feel like I could live with a few less horsepower, especially without the benefit of the all wheel drive saving me when I dipped a little too far into the loud pedal. Additionally, I think the silver flies (literally) a little lower on the radar, and I can’t express enough how glad I am that those beautiful Ruf alloys aren’t black. Sure, it has more miles on the clock, but it looks to be in just about perfect condition and without the more expensive motor, it’ll set you back less at the next servicing. To me, this is a slightly better value than the white car, with a price closer to the high end of the standard 993 TT market but with some nice looking upgrades. Without either being actual Ruf cars, I’d drive the silver one comfortable in both the fact that I had a fantastic looking, exceptionally fast car and $35,000 in the bank to help pay the bills.


2001 Audi TT Convertible

In my opinion, the Audi TT is a misunderstood car. Many people pass over considering it as an option because it’s just not sporty enough. Well, the truth of the matter is that the TT just isn’t a sports car. If you can get that out of your mind, though, there are a lot of things to appreciate about the TT. It was uniquely styled, perhaps not to the liking of everyone, but it certainly does get attention. Aside from looking the part, the TT offered a reasonable practicality. It’s all about perception – if you think of this car as a turbocharged, all wheel drive convertible Golf in a great looking body, it makes a bit more sense. The recipe for what would become the TT was what most of the Volkswagen and Audi crowd would have wanted in a new car for a long time; but when they launched, the reception was lukewarm from most enthusiasts. That’s resulted in lower values than some of the other German convertibles, but opens some opportunity to get into a fun, good looking, quick and practical convertible, such as this TT for sale on eBay now:

This car is so FUN. This TT has baseball leather stitching and is fully loaded! It has a new clutch and has been well maintained. It zips through LA traffic and purrs up PCH. All the functions on the car work perfectly. The convertible top is in great condition. There is a small tare in the leather but that is it. Good brakes and good tires.


Let’s be frank – when you put the top down on a car, your hair blows around regardless of whether you spend $100,000 or $10,000. No one will ever accuse the Audi TT of being the best at anything, but it’s very good at quite a few things. It can be used as a commuter, gets reasonable fuel mileage, won’t break the bank to maintain, looks pretty cool, goes very quickly when you want it to, and has all wheel drive that renders it more useful in inclement weather. This particular TT looks quite pretty in Nimbus Grey with the Baseball Glove Leather option, and the polished “Fat Five” wheels are my favorite look on the TT. The 6-speed manuals suit the car well and are fun to drive, and it even makes a pretty good noise when you wind it out.

Maybe it’s not everyone’s dream car, but at $11,000 dollars, I think you can have a useable and enjoyable weekender, and most people would be very surprised when you told them how little you spent for so much style. Don’t repair the seat yet – get your money’s worth of solar radiation with the top down, and keep your eye out for someone parting one down the road to grab the seat bottom. I feel that in the not-so-distant future, more people will appreciate the unique looking TT, and it seems to be aging much more gracefully than the Z3 or SLK.


1988 BMW M6

When someone is asked to name some of the great models in BMW history, historically the same names populate the list – 328, 2002, 3.0 CSL, M1, E30 M3 and the E28 M5. Newer converts to the BMW brand will extol the virtues of the E36 and E46 M3, E39 M5 and the monstrous howling V10 E60 M5. They would be right, for sure, but notably absent from the front of most enthusiast’s minds is the spectacular E24 M6. Available initially in Europe in 1983 with the M88 motored M635CSi, North America later received a special S38 (catalyst equipped) version of the magical 24 valve inline six motor churning out enough power to scare most supercars. Though designed in the 1970s, the E24 seemed to really come into its own in the 1980s and defined “the look” – low, sleek and aggressive, these were highway predators that could hold their own on any back road. In terms of grand touring coupes, the M6 was simply in a class of its own with its unique combination of luxury, style and sport. Today’s 1988 M6 is an example of how perfect that combination was:

M6s come to the market in generally two fashions – near perfect examples, or examples with serious needs. This example seems very much to be the former as a lower-mileage survivor. The advertisement states fresh servicing, which is a plus, though it would be nice to know if that was just an oil change or a full valve adjustment service. At this point in their lives, the S38 motored BMWs aren’t a cheap car to keep running in top condition, so finding one that is in good shape like this is a great starting point. Being that the car is in Massachusetts, it would be prudent to check the bottom of the car for rust starting though it appears to be well cared for. Other than some small chipping on the chin spoiler, the new owner would most likely want to get a replacement set of wheels and tires immediately – at nearly $2,500 for a new set TRX tires, you’d be better off sourcing some Style 5 17” BBS RC wheels from a 528i sport to maintain the look and have affordable (and much better) tire options.

I really think the M6 market is undervalued right now. Values on the M3 continue to soar and are pulling other BMW models up with them. The price seems in line with the high end of the market, but represents only about 50% of the price of a similar mileage and condition E30 M3 right now. While having the 4 doors of the M5 is certainly a plus, the M6 was available –thankfully – in colors other than black, such as this pretty and eye-catching Cinnibar Red. The 88 and 89 models also have slightly revised and much more slick looking bumper covers and ellipsoid headlights. They are supreme highway cruisers, more comfortable for two than the M5 and with enough luggage space for a long weekend trip. As $24,000 is buying you less and less 25 year old BMW these days, this M6 offers you a lot of car for your investment, with the promise to appreciate as the years and the smiles grow.


1978 Porsche 924 Limited Edition

In the past two weeks, I’ve reviewed both a 1987 Porsche 924S and a 1988 Porsche 924S “Special Edition”. The while both of those cars shared their big brother 944’s engine and suspension for a more sporty feel, today’s 924 is from the beginning of the model run. This is the car that generates probably the most violent reactions in the Porsche crowd, with many claiming it is unworthy of a Porsche badge. This is unfortunate, as the original 924 design was groundbreaking in both aerodynamics and styling, and is the most pure expression of that iconic look that would carry through the 1990s and be copied by many other companies. Sure, it shared the engine from an Audi 100 and didn’t really have the power to match its looks, but let’s not forget that the iconic 356 also borrowed heavily from the Volkswagen parts bin. Most of these early 924s have gone the way of the dodo, so it’s exciting to see this Limited Edition 1978 model pop up on eBay:

This is a super rare California original 1978 Porsche 924 Limited Edition with only 53k miles! It is one of only 1800 that were made. It is a beautiful gray exterior that shines up superb! It has a nice set of cloth insert seats that really hold you in place as you are taking the turns! This 924 is equipped with the original 2.0 Audi motor that produces 125 horsepower and over 125 lbs/torque. It has a huge sunroof that goes in the trunk and it still has the original bag that it goes in. This car was recently sold and fraudently misrepresented on Ebay as a near museum quality piece and a true survivor. The car was described as immaculate and flawless etc. and I do not want to mislead the next owner.

I am selling this car for my friend who is simply trying to get back some of the money that was spent on this car. This car has super potential and truly is in remarkable exterior shape with a nice interior as well but if you are looking for a show car (as he thought he was buying) this is not for you. She starts right up and idles great after about a minute of “warm-up” time. The clutch grabs as it should but does feel a little spongy. The rear hatchback will need the grommets that are sold here on eBay to allow it to have a tighter seal when it is closed. It does not leak to my knowledge. The tires are great but she does need a set of brake pads front and rear and will in the future be ready for a set of shocks all around.

The windows work great but one of the switches has a mind of its own. The AC is not working but is fully intact. I have a German car sickness that I do not want to be cured of– I am well versed in the 924/944/968 chassis and can tell you that this car is ready to rock and roll with a minimal amount of effort. My friend knows that he has a rare piece of Porsche history but his family circumstances do not allow him to have a car that needs to be finished. He was under the assumption he was buying a museum car. This 924 is a blast to drive and has a great visceral feel without the added weight of the 944 Queenesque “fat-bottomed girl” rear flared fenders. She revs out like a cat with its tail on fire and is what a sports car used to feel like. This car is equipped with a manual rack for the steering which puts the driver in total control of the road. She is truly a point and shoot go-kart for the open road.

The original 924 motor was much maligned as a fake Porsche because of the Audi motor but the ease of maintenance and smiles per gallon that she will provide has proven over time to be a real winner. The steering wheel is in nice shape but could use a cover or be refinished. The dash is in nice shape but does have a properly installed coverlay on it. This car is well above a project car but a few notches below a museum car. It is simply NOT what my friend was trying to purchase. This car could be used as a great daily driver or a Sunday leisurely cruiser. If you have always wanted to own a Porsche but have a VW budget this is THE car for you. I have great positive feedback and have honestly tried to disclose all that I know about this wonderfully engineered piece of German automobile history. From my previous experience with the 924/944/968 chassis I can tell you that NOTHING is quite like the feeling of meandering down the coast with the top out and Led Zeppelin on the radio. This car was created to carve through the twisties like a hot knife through butter! I wish that I could keep this car for myself.

I like that the seller is upfront that the car is not a museum piece, but rather an exceptional quality driver. From the look of the photos presented, he’s not hiding anything – the car looks to be in fantastic condition. One has to feel a bit for the story presented; that the car was represented as a museum-quality piece to the current seller when it was not, and they’re selling to limit their losses. As many classic cars are being over represented these days in online auctions, this scenario isn’t very hard to believe!

You could buy this car and drive to your local Porsche show, and would probably be scoffed and berated for having continued the existence of a 924. You could buy this car and drive to your local coffee shop meet, and spend a lot of time explaining why you didn’t buy a 944. But if it were me, I’d buy this car and drive it to a Volkswagen and Audi meet. I guarantee that upon arriving you’d have a group of appreciating enthusiasts pining over the condition and uniqueness of this car. It is actually a great counterpoint to the 1983 Scirocco I wrote up last week. For about a third of the money, you can have a very similar experience in this car, if not feel a bit more special. For those that claim it’s not deserving of the Porsche badge, I respond it’s not deserving of the treatment afforded it by the Porsche crowd. A car of this quality deserves to be appreciated and enjoyed, and I think the next owner will – and they’ll have gotten a bargain for sure.


1988 Porsche 924S Special Edition

There were two main complaints about the 1987 Porsche 924S I wrote up last week – it was too expensive, and it was an automatic. In response to both points, I’d like to revisit a car we featured back in May that remains for sale on eBay. With a more reasonable entry price, the desired 5-speed, and more stylish although not original Design 90 wheels, this 1988 Porsche 924S Special Edition ticks the right boxes if you prefer to fly low on the Porsche ownership radar. This car also epitomizes how the 924S is misunderstood and unappreciated – were they to change the name from “Special Edition” to “Club Sport” (which it effectively is) I really think it would be priced higher and snapped up more quickly. As a friend once told me, it’s not really a special edition unless someone knows why it’s special! As it sits, though, it remains a performance bargain that will provide lots of driving enjoyment for not much investment, especially with the opening bid now below $6,000.

1988 Porsche 924S Special Edition – REVISIT

One of the great things about writing for German Cars for Sale is learning about the myriad esoteric special editions produced by our beloved German manufacturers. From the relatively-mundane (Audi Allroad US Ski Team edition, anyone?) to the extreme (How about the E30 M3 Cecotto?), they are the funny bits that keep us car nerds hunting for more. Today we have a special edition of one of the most unloved Porsches ever produced. The 924 came in to provide a basement for the company line as the 914 and 912 were phased out. Using the front-engine platform that led to the 944, the 924 earned its derision by offering just 95hp at the outset. Even if it was 30 years ago, the ongoing horsepower wars make this number seem unbelievable.

Luckily, today’s 924 is not one of the first models. In fact it is from the final year of the 924 which brought the 944’s full 160hp and is the most special US production code M756, indicating the 924S Special Edition. Following Porsche’s ingenious recipe of removing content (they even deleted the passenger side mirror, huge weight savings), improving suspension and upping the price, the SE was the hottest version of the least-cool Porsche. While the 924 may not be loved in general, the SE is an interesting piece of obscure Porsche knowledge that is most likely a blast to drive.

“For the true collector” indeed – once you’ve collected every other Porsche, try the 924SE! In all seriousness, with 72k miles and bidding starting at $8k, you could do a hell of a lot worse. The lack of interior shots leads me to believe this SE suffers from the worn-cloth issues common on these, so I wouldn’t buy it sight-unseen. No reserve means this could potentially be had for less than $10k though, which makes it a very interesting value proposition over a good 944 and scores a few extra rarity points.


1995.5 Audi S6 Avant

If you wanted a fast executive saloon in the U.S. in 1995, your options were running out. Economic conditions and more stringent emission regulations were taking their toll on sales. 1994 was the last year for the magical Porsche-built Mercedes-Benz 500E, and 1995 would be end of the run for the hand-built E34 M5. Audi, too, was redefining its model lineup, with 1995 ending the legendary 2.2 inline 5 20 valve turbo’s run in the renamed S6. While most of the changes from the prior model year’s S4 were minor, Audi’s swan song for this model was something special and unique in the market – they brought back the fast wagon. While the S4 Avant had been available in Europe throughout the model’s run, it was never imported to the U.S., meaning it had been four years since the very limited run 200 20V Turbo Quattro Avant had reached these shores. If you didn’t plunk down the quite sizable sum for one of these gems, it would be another 5 years until Audi would bring back the fast wagon with the B5 S4. Like the earlier 200 20V Turbo Quattro Avant was to the Type 44 chassis, the S6 Avant is generally considered the most valuable and most desirable of the C4 chassis cars that came to the United States. Today’s example is one of the few left in good condition:

The Bad
Mainly rust issues. All four doors are rusted up under the moldings, and some rust is starting to bubble up on the two rear fender wells. Bruce Haymann of Karmann Auto Body Painted from bottom of the pillars down. Bruce’s shop is top notch but just the NE salt sitting in some of these places will lead to these problems. I had planned on getting four rust free doors, and doing the work myself, but with two business and a new baby girl at home, I just have no time. Rear diff weeps a bit of oil. New E-brake cables have stretched, and need to be tightened up. I am sure there is a few other small things, but she is doing great for a 17 year old car.

I bought the car almost 2 years ago from a nuclear engineer, Audi car club member, lime rock track instructor (car was never tracked as he alway used used his coupe), Audi enthusiast. The car was his daily driver for almost 10 years and he was replacing it with a B8 S4. A maintenance folder came with the car that is one more then one inch thick (including original window sticker). For gods sake, he had the timing belt done 3 times! Maintenance was extremely important to him.

When I bought it I knew about the rust and knew that the car was in perfect mechanical shape, so I ended up paying a premium. It was worth it as I have never had an issue with the car. I believe that the price is more then fair judging its mechanical shape, and how nice the interior is. I know not everyone has access to bodywork tools, and the know how, but it will bet the right car for someone. If not, it will come of the road this fall and I will make time for it. My major incentive to sell is, if I buy my wife a TDI wagon, she will give me her Golf R, not a bad replacement in my eyes, doesn’t have the same soul, but…

I know the original owner of the car, and how the seller describes him is very accurate – he was fastidious about the car, and it showed. However, as he recently said to me, New England winters have caught up with the car, and it’s beginning to show the effects of that. Despite this, fewer and fewer of these cars remain in good condition. Like many of the fast executive cars, they quickly depreciated and fell into hands of owners who failed to maintain them properly. Many more suffered the ignominious fate of having their valuable 20V Turbo powerplant removed for transplant into other Audi models, such as replica S2s. Finally, many more have been modified and pushed to the extreme, and driven hard or have lots of miles. This car is a rare exception to these conditions and remains very presentable and mechanically well sorted.

If you’re looking for a show car, this isn’t it, and the price reflects that. Just consider what condition E34 M5 or 500E $6,500 buys you, though, and it puts this car’s value into a much better perspective. The car has tasteful and desirable modifications that won’t break the bank for future maintenance by pushing it too far, while making it considerably more fun to drive quickly. These cars are legendary in terms of longevity and reliability, with 300,000+ miles not unheard of. Sure, a bunch of small items will break along the way – there isn’t any getting over that this car is 20 plus year old technology. But if you can put up with the small fixes it will throw at you, you’ll have a fun car that is capable of carrying a massive load, getting up a snowy mountain road, and dusting off most sports cars. In my opinion, the price is spot on for a well presented car, even taking into account the need for future rust repairs.


1969 Mercedes Benz 280 SL Roadster

My favorite memory of my father’s 1971 280SL 4 speed is riding home in the evening from some vintage car races in the New England fall. His 280 didn’t have a very nice roof at that point, so we were driving with the top down. Cool, right? No, it was just downright cold. I huddled low in the cabin, trying to get as much of the heat trickling out of the non-existent ventilation system. It’s a perfect example of how spartan the W113 SLs are in comparison to the later R107 cars, but it’s also a reminder that SL stands for “Sport Light” – something the newer cars lost along the way. The W113 also got a dose of “Sport” compared to the anemic 190 SL that preceded it as well, with the 230 and 250 sporting 150 growling horsepower. The 280 gained 20 more ponies, but most were coupled to an automatic transmission that diluted the experience. Thankfully, that’s not the case with this 1969 280 SL 4 speed:

Gorgeous, head turning 280 SL Roadster. Rare 4-speed, dealer A/C. Both tops, interior is like new, radio and clock work as do all guages lights and levers. Original tool kit, like new Michelins. No known rust issues, rockers and floor pans were restored by a classic mercedes shop and are documented. Paint finish looks very good but does have a few imperfections. The soft top has a few wear spots, typical of older tops. Mechanically this car is near perfect. It runs amazingly and tracks straight as an arrow. Brakes are new all around and it has been mechanically maintained by a classic expert.

Enjoy this car as it is for years or invest in a high end paint job and you will have a show car. This car will only appreciate in value. There aren’t many available at this price in this fine condition.


In the 1990s, these cars could be had for a song. Through the 2000s though, appreciation for the very attractive Paul Bracq design and the no frills simplicity drove prices into the $40,000 range for very nice examples. Since then values have continued to climb, and mint examples fetch the best part of $100,000. This car makes no claim to be a mint example, and to me that’s its appeal. At about half the price of the best examples, you have a show worthy driver. These really are enjoyable cars to drive, though not so much on the highway – 70 miles an hour equates to nearly 4,000 RPMs, but on a back road with the top down, that throaty inline 6 will reward you rowing through the gears. It’s not a fast car, but you sure can have a lot of fun on your way to your destination! Better yet, arriving at that destination in your W113 will make you feel like you’re at a Hollywood premier. People will turn their heads to see who is driving this beautiful, classic Mercedes. It has a presence about it that cars at twice the price can’t achieve. Just dress warmly.
