There seems to be no end to the rise in air-cooled Porsche prices, but one of those cars that has lagged behind the crowd is the 914. This car was a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen, meant to be a halo car for Volkswagen to success the Karmann Ghia and to replace the 912 as the base model in the Porsche lineup. Throughout the years, Porsche has seemed to be a bit confused on what to field as an “entry level” car, as they went from a four cylinder 911, to this 914, then to the front-engined, water-cooled 924 and finally, the mid-engine Boxster that debuted in the late 1990s. The 914 would last for eight years, from 1969 through 1976, available in both four and six cylinder form. This 1972 example for sale in Idaho was originally a California car, looking stunning in silver metallic.

15 CommentsWith Christmas 2014 now in the rear view mirror, did everyone get what they wanted from Santa? If not, here’s something of a late present to make up for it: a Dakar Yellow E36 M3. I’m not typically a fan of yellow on cars, but Dakar Yellow looked a treat on this M3. Much like Estoril Blue, it was a color almost made for this car, accentuating the styling which was a crisp update of the E30 3 series. This M3 with well under 100,000 miles comes to us from our friends at Shift Bespoke Automotive in Laguna Hills, California.

Comments closedWalking around Manhattan a few weeks ago, I came across a W113 Mercedes-Benz SL. In style conscious New York, this is quite possibly the ultimate accessory. More petite than its predecessor, the 300SL Roadster yet a bit more classic than the R107 SL that ended production at the end of the 1980s, this is a great way to make a statement while not having something too huge to haul around the streets of the Big Apple. These SLs aren’t exactly what you would consider an affordable classic, but then again, you are getting a lot of advanced technology for the day wrapped in a decidedly vintage yet timeless skin. This restored example in Los Angeles represents the final evolution of the W113, the 280SL, mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox.

1 CommentIf you were looking to make a splash in the late 1980s with some serious German iron, there were three cars that stick out in my mind. The Porsche 928, the Mercedes 560SL and this car, the BMW M6. These were the dream cars of my childhood and for me formed an almost perfect triumvirate of engineering, performance and status. Out of the three, however, the BMW will always be my favorite. It combined grand touring luxury with a nice serving of aggressiveness to form one lusty high-performance express. The original M3 is still getting a lot of attention in the collector market but it seems as if there has been an awakening to the original 6er as of late. This M6 for sale in Connecticut is one for the purists, with under 40,000 miles on the clock and no alternations to speak of.
