1997 Porsche 911 Targa

Often forgotten, the 993 based Porsche 911 Targa was an interesting study in trying to move a segment forward. With a huge glass panel roof that slid inside the vehicle, the profile was changed a bit. Gone was the distinctive rounded rear side windows and a wide B pillar functioning as a roll bar. Also standard were two piece 17″ wheels to differentiate this car from the standard Carrera. For 911 sun worshippers that maybe don’t want to go the whole hog with the cabriolet, this Targa for sale in New York is a good middle ground.

1984 Mercedes-Benz SL36 AMG

There’s always those cars that you sit back and wonder why they weren’t created in the first place. Then there are those of us who actually go ahead and build what the factory thought they should have offered. Such is the case with this 1984 Mercedes-Benz “SL36.” As most of us know, this wasn’t a thing, but when you consider it, it’s not an unreasonable creation. While the US got the breathed on 3.6 liter inline-6 from the boffins at AMG in the form of the limited production C36, the rest of the world was also treated to this powerplant in the W124 E class. The R107 never had an official hot rod version, although AMG breathed on a few of these roadsters before they became an in-house tuner. If the 3.6 liter inline-6 from the tuning arm existed when this SL was new, we may have seen a creation like this SL36 for sale in Witten, Germany. Front-Engined Foursome: 944 Turbo vs. 968 vs. 968 vs. 928GTS

With evangelists like the folks at flüssig magazine, the front-engined, water-cooled Porsches are finally getting the respect they deserve. Long living in the shadow of the car they were supposed to supersede, the 911, these sports cars have now become collectable in their own right, praised for their performance and practicality. Today we’ll take a look at four examples of the breed, all dressed in black and ready for some action. We’ll start with this very clean 944 Turbo for sale in Los Angeles.

1974 BMW 2002tii

The Netherlands, for some reason, seems to be a breeding ground when it comes to great examples of classics that we love. Case in point this low-mileage BMW 2002tii that was sourced from Portugal. This one is a later model with the square taillights and has a few tasty add ons such as the Minilite style wheels and rally lamps. The vintage white on black Portuguese license plates finish off the decidedly period look. give it a decidedly period look.

1966 Mercedes-Benz 230 Universal

With the explosion of SUVs in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, we tend to forget there was a time when the mainstay utilitarian vehicle in the product lineup was the T-model, more commonly known on these shores as the wagon. While the first factory wagons from Mercedes-Benz were the W123s in the late 1970s, there were a few coachbuilt examples that appeared before that. One of these was the Universal model based on the W110 chassis. This example for sale in California gives the five-door fan a rare chance at combining classic Mercedes looks with the utility of an estate.
