1997 Porsche 911 Targa

Often forgotten, the 993 based Porsche 911 Targa was an interesting study in trying to move a segment forward. With a huge glass panel roof that slid inside the vehicle, the profile was changed a bit. Gone was the distinctive rounded rear side windows and a wide B pillar functioning as a roll bar. Also standard were two piece 17″ wheels to differentiate this car from the standard Carrera. For 911 sun worshippers that maybe don’t want to go the whole hog with the cabriolet, this Targa for sale in New York is a good middle ground.

I’m not so sure I would be one of the ones who would opt for the Targa in this case. I was happy to see Porsche went back to the old silhouette of the classic 911 Targa with the newest generation, the 991, however complex the folding mechanism might be. Some of these glass-roofed 993s were known to suffer from leaks, rattles and a sometimes unreliable roof mechanism. Such is the price to pay sometimes for new technology. Given the condition of this Targa, we’re in the ballpark, however, these particular 993s will always fall a little bit behind in favor for the hardcore 911 enthusiast that is seeking driving thrills above all else.
