1986 Ruf BTR Cabriolet – REVISIT

13004615_5

The RUF BTR Cabriolet we featured back in December 2013 has come up for sale again, this time with a much higher price! The original auction, which did not sell, had an asking price of $199,500. The car then was relisted at $149,500 and still failed to sell. The current listing has it at $285,000, which is a lot. These are amazing machines with a fantastic pedigree and they have tended to do well on the market, a point which should continue to hold true in the future. But this is asking too much, especially given the previous auctions.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

I have been enjoying my romp through the Porsche paint spectrum and I will continue with that theme with today’s car. Love or hate these colors, I think we can all agree that Porsche does an excellent job of keeping interesting options available to allow customers to set their cars apart from the many silver, black, white, and red vehicles of the world. On the air-cooled market these cars can be particularly noteworthy. This brings us to the car we see here, another paint-to-sample color that certainly will not appeal to everyone, but which we so rarely will ever come across: an Amaranth Violet 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, located in Maryland, with 43,000 miles on it. Like the last paint-to-sample car I featured the original buyer selected a previously available color for this Carrera so there should be a sticker to verify the color itself. Any shade of purple is rare on a car and its variants make up some of the fewest offerings Porsche has made available. There is one consistent feature amongst them: they are incredibly eye catching. Like with orange, there is almost no subtlety to these cars and draped over the curvy figure of the 993 C4S Amaranth Violet should attract even more attention.

1960 Porsche 356B Super 90 Cabriolet

I think I understand the appeal of nostalgia. It’s the appeal of something we perceive as less complex, freer, or rooted in the familiar. In that regard our own memories are most important and it is the connections between past and present events that creates the joy we derive from such experiences. On the second-hand car market, nostalgia also plays an important role in solidifying and elevating the values of particular models. Nostalgia isn’t the only influential player in those market movements, but it definitely has its role. So when I look at the Porsche 356 I think I can understand part of the reason for their success; the reason they have become six-figure cars even when by any modern performance and refinement standard they will fall well short. Like many models the 356 has its own fans that in many ways are distinct from 911 fans or fans of Porsche’s various front-engined GTs. I am very much a 911 fan, yet, even though these cars are quite a bit older than I am, I can easily see the appeal of a relaxed drive in the sun and the wind with very little standing between your inputs as the driver and the responses of the car. With simplicity and lightness comes joy. So I think I understand the appeal of nostalgia. Here we have a restored Slate Gray 1960 Porsche 356B Super 90 Cabriolet, located in Miami, with Black interior.

1984 Porsche 930 Coupe

With time many things can be mended. So just because a car was not available in our market during its years of production doesn’t mean that those same cars will never be available. Such is the case with the Porsche 930, which took a hiatus from US shores beginning in 1980 only to return in 1986. For fans of Porsche’s top model those years must have seemed an eternity. All we had were posters and our imagination. European owners suffered no such issues and by 1984 the 930 was sending 330 hp to those wide rear tires, making for pulse-quickening performance that required constant attention and offered numerous rewards for those capable of exploiting its massive performance potential. RoW cars possess a certain allure to many buyers as they possess a uniqueness that is difficult to capture and that allure always is enhanced when the car in question was not available in the US market. Thankfully the days of the 930’s absence have passed and those European models now can be found Stateside along with many examples of the original US market cars. Here we have one such European example: a Guards Red 1984 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in New York, with just 34,721 miles on it.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

As we neared the final year of the 3.2 Carrera, which would also be the final year of the classic 911 design, Porsche released a couple special models as a send-off (or for the cynical as a way of selling off a few extra chassis) for the car that had quickly become the staple of the brand. But even with those special editions it is to the standard models that frequently we return with such joy. For that is where the variation lies and is most apparent. Here we have another example of an interesting color combination that we rarely come across, but which provides excellent vitality to even an older car: a Velvet Red 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Florida, with a Burgundy leather interior and 58,000 miles on it. While today the 911 Cabriolet seems as common as any other model, at the time of the 3.2 Carrera’s departure it had only been around a little more than 5 years, with the Carrera itself being the first model to have a Cabriolet during its entire model run. That doesn’t necessarily make these especially rare or anything like that, but this is the first model where we begin to see an evolution of the design and, of course, for those particularly interested in the classic 911 it would be the most advanced on the market.
