The second of my 964s takes thing in a much more interesting, though also in a more likely divisive direction. Unlike yesterday’s Cabriolet, which likely would make for an excellent open-top driver 911, the Coupe we see here aims straight for collectors. That is in part due to its low mileage, but largely due to its eye-catching color combination. With an Amethyst Metallic exterior over a Cobalt Blue interior I can honestly say I’ve seen nothing else like it. There’s likely a reason we haven’t come across such a combination previously. The juxtaposition probably will be hard for some to get their head around. One of our commenters remarked that the Amaranth Violet 993 we featured last week would have been very much Prince’s style. I think this Carrera 4 takes us even further in that direction.

I spend a decent percentage of my 911 perusing looking specifically at the years of 964 production. Mostly that’s to be on the lookout for interesting examples of the 964 itself, but also for interesting examples of the ’89 3.2 Carrera. The latter are plentiful, while the former certainly are not. To be clear, I see plenty of 964s out there, but they tend to all be more or less the same: either black, red, or white in reasonable, not great, condition and consisting mostly of Targas and Cabriolets. Given the wide variety of interesting colors Porsche had available during the 964’s life it almost seems strange that we don’t see more of them, but rare colors are just that. When we add to that the difficultly Porsche had in selling these in the first place, then we probably shouldn’t be surprised that those that did sell were of a more typical variety. Well, I’ve found a couple that stood out to me more so than the rest. The one we see here isn’t of the rare vibrant sort, but I really like a 964 in Grey (for whatever reason the color suits the model’s lines well) so it caught my attention. We’re short on information, but the condition looks pretty good and if the price can be brought down some I think Cabriolet fans could be quite pleased. Here we have a Stone Grey (Steingrau) Metallic 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, located in San Francisco, with a Taupe leather interior and 86,176 miles on it.

Comments closedAs a kid, the Porsche 911 was one of those cars that I always lusted after but for some reason, the thrill of that sports car has faded with me over the years. A combination of steep cost of entry and a bit of ubiquity have left me longing for a more uncommon option. One car which has always been on my radar is the Porsche 968. These cars are more rare than the 911, and the combination of the transaxle layout, big four-cylinder engine and practicality are too enticing to ignore. This 968 for sale in Northern Virginia has just crossed 100,000 miles. For those looking for a driver rather than a show queen, this car is a good option.

1 CommentI feature (and we come across) a fairly good number of 911s in lighter and brighter shades of blue. This is especially true of the 3.2 Carrera where it seems that light blue was a much more popular and common choice than any of the darker varieties available. Here we will look at a Coupe in one of those darker shades: a paint-to-sample Persian Blue 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Washington, with matching Blue interior and 68,095 miles on it. I tend to gravitate toward the brighter blues, but these dark examples do possess a certain allure for those who may be looking for a departure from the much more standard Black 911 that we see regularly. This particular 911 appears in pretty nice shape given its age and as the final year before the Carrera came equipped with the G50 5-speed transmission we can hope the price will end somewhat more on the reasonable side of the spectrum.

Comments closedI’m going to turn my attention to another modified 911, though this time one that has moved in an entirely different direction than the RSR backdate featured earlier this week. This 911 also should come with a much more reasonable price tag. At least, that is the hope and should be the case barring some extremely aggressive bidding on this auction. There’s kind of a lot to review here so let’s get to it: here we have a 911 that began its life as a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe fitted with the M491 Turbo-look package. It is very well traveled having covered a reported 236,211 miles over its life. At some point (we can probably assume recently, but the seller does not say when) the Turbo-look moniker became more than just appearance as the engine and transmission from a 930 were fitted. Again, we don’t have precise details on the engine; there is some suggestion that it is actually the engine from a 3.3 liter 964 Turbo, but again we lack some clarity. Given the mileage I assume this 911 has also been painted and the interior refreshed (or perhaps redone altogether). I’m not sure about the name of this exterior color, but it looks quite good. The interior I’d guess is Cork and it too looks in really nice shape. There are a host of other small aesthetic changes to both the exterior and interior, but other than the wheels, which I don’t care much for, most of these additions are minor and could be changed without issue should someone so desire. Those are the details, and the questions all come down to the engine, transmission, and body.
