Wednesday Wheels Roundup: Ruf/Speedline Edition

Are there better looking wheels than the 5-spokes made by Speedline in the mid late 80s to early 90s? I’m not sure there are; the proportions are perfect, the finishes were awesome – they just suited the cars really well. They were the counterpoint to the BBS wheels and were also popular on the track. A few decades on, they’re now worth more than just about any wheels from the period – more even than the fan-favorite BBS RS. But if you have a Porsche and you want the ultimate period wheel, Speedlines are the way to go in my opinion. Here’s a selection of a few different versions of the Ruf wheels; from the original “Yellowbird” wheels through the more recent BTR and CTR wheels, along with some great Alessios and some Kenesis Supercups. Enjoy!

Tuner Tuesday: 1987 Ruf BTR Lightweight – REVISIT

Generally, when someone says that the price of a car has dropped $10,000 it’s a fire sale. For example, I’ve never bought a car for more than $10,000! But when you’re talking a rare, one of one Ruf BTR Lightweight, a $10,000 price drop means that the asking price is still a staggering $248,500. While this will remain eye candy to nearly everyone who reads this, I still thought it was worth a second look!

Tuner Tuesday: Tuner Accessories Roundup

Time for another roll call of some neat accessories I spotted for sale this week. The Votex items are extremely rare to find, even if their styling is somewhat polarizing. For a factory look, the W124 AMG rear spoiler needs refinishing but is an original piece. The Nürburgring brake package was a factory option that Dinan used as a “Big Brake” package for many BMWs, but originally came on either the M5, 540i M-Sport or 850CSi. Finally, there’s a set of Ruf pedals for your 911/964/993 just to finish things off. What’s your favorite?

Tuner Tuesday: 1987 Ruf BTR Lightweight

While there are a plethora of Porsche 930s sporting Ruf details, when you get into the real Ruf vehicles you have crested a very high mountain of performance. Rufs emerged in the 1980s as the ultimate giant killers; cars whose performance exceeded the expectations of everyone in the motoring press and every stock vehicle they came across. Put simply, there were just no cars that were faster; even Porsche’s legendary 959 was bullied by the equally revered Ruf CTR Yellowbird in a high-speed test when they were new. They were, and remain, the most expensive and most highly sought modified Porsches available. Add to that the specialized lightweight versions of the already exclusive Rufs, and you’ve got something truly special and unique:
