Four-door….or four-door coupe? BMW 550i vs. M6 Gran Coupe

For years, the BMW 5 Series has served as a textbook example of a sports saloon. While BMW kept perfecting this genre of automobile, Mercedes-Benz spotted an opportunity in the market, developing a whole new vehicle sector: the four-door coupe. The phrase seems an oxymoron but what you are really getting is a four-door vehicle with a much more swept back roofline and four-place seating in most cases. Even Volkswagen muscled their way into this segment with their Passat CC.

Today we’ll take a look at two recent BMW offerings, both with V8 engines mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox: the 550i and the M6 Gran Coupe. We’ll start with this 2012 550i for sale in North Carolina.

As we discussed back in April with another 550i we featured, you can no longer spec a V8 5 series with a manual gearbox. Sadly, it seems to be the way things are going. So if you want to row your own with an eight cylinder BMW sedan, it’s time to consider the used market. The mileage on this car is about average for the year, so taking that into consideration, one might be able to negotiate a little bit off, given we live in a market where the manual gearbox isn’t favored. As this car sits, it should bring somewhere in the low to mid $30k range.

Next up, we’ll take a look at the 550i’s more avant garde cousin, the 650i Gran Coupe.

I’m fairly impressed that BMW is offering a Gran Coupe in the US market with a manual gearbox. Perhaps they are still leaving some things on the table for diehard three-pedal enthusiasts. Which one would I choose? I tend to be more conservative when it comes to things like architecture, wardrobe and vehicle styling. But in this case, I would opt for the M6 Gran Coupe. I’ve seen many of these in person and in my humble opinion, it’s one of the best looking BMWs in the current lineup. The car has a wide, muscular stance and looks up to date without looking like everything else out there on the road. It’s a winner, in my book.
