The Audi 4000 Quattro has been on a fairly meteoric rise in value over the past few years, shadowing its original market competition E30 BMW. Granted, much as when new the Type 85 chassis hasn’t gained as much press as the E30 does, but we’ve recently seen $14,000 4000 Quattros – unthinkable even a year ago, and a signal that the strength of the 1980s market really has pulled up everything along with the big headlines of the 911 and M3. Of course, because they languished in value for so long, there just aren’t many mint condition 4000 Quattros remaining. Because they haven’t been valuable for a long time, and because of the robust nature of the drive train, the 4000 Quattro has been lurking for a long time as a popular tuning platform. Engine swaps abound; from 5000 Quattro spec 2.2 10v turbos through twin turbo 4.2 V8s and 1.8Ts, just about everything has found its way into the engine bay of the 4000; but by far, the one that most wish for is the 20 valve turbo version of the inline 5, with up to and above 1,000 horsepower possible and the Group B soundtrack. Today’s 4000 has just such a swap completed:

Porsche fans can be, at times, a curious lot. No matter what new model the company unveils, those into the marque will always judge it against the almighty 911. The Cayenne SUV has been their sales savior, the Panamera sedan has been deemed ugly and the Boxster is for those who can’t afford a real Porsche. We’ve heard all the stereotypes. Back in the 1970s, Porsche devised an entry level car with the help of Volkswagen in the form of the mid-engined 914. Powered by a flat-4, these were badged both as VWs and Porsches, and later on exclusively as Porsches. This 914 in astoundingly original condition is for sale in Florida and a perfect runabout for soaking up that state’s rays.

3 CommentsLast week we featured this M491-optioned Carrera Coupe. It sold for its Buy It Now price of $47,000, which at the time of writing I felt was high within the current market. I was wrong. It comes as little surprise then that almost immediately after that auction ended another M491-optioned Carrera appeared on the market, though this time a Cabriolet. Coincidence? Possibly, but we see this sort of thing happen often enough that I assume the second seller is capitalizing on the market, and I wouldn’t blame him. Here we have a M491-optioned 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Connecticut, with 50,805 miles on the clock.

3 CommentsLike a lot BMW fans, the styling language implemented across the range has left me with mixed feelings. I try and temper myself and keep receptive to new design, but more often than not, what I’ve seen on the showroom floor over the last decade has left me yearning for the classics. In the case of the BMW Z4 M Coupe, however, BMW hit the nail on the head. While the Z4 Roadster was a little bit awkward, the fastback lines and beefed up haunches of the M Coupe looked sharp. This black Z4 M Coupe for sale in Maryland may be of the new school, but its mission is that of speed and power.
