I usually don’t think twice when I see a Mercedes with a ton of miles on it. But I started thinking a lot more than twice when I saw a W211 E55 AMG with over 400,000 miles for sale. As I started digger deeper into this wunderkind, the story got even wilder. This E55 had a single owner its entire 400,000 mile life and managed to get into two accidents in that time with one severe enough to deploy the airbags. So obviously this W211 for sale outside of Chicago deserves a deeper look, so let’s try to make sense of this one.

When we feature the Porsche 356 the point isn’t typically about performance. And, in a certain way, it isn’t about performance here either. But like the Speedster and its lightweight no frills philosophy the 356 Carrera 2 brought with it a more performance-oriented mindset and in its day was very much so about performance. The Carrera 2 featured a larger 2.0 liter flat-4 four cam engine producing 130 hp, which gave it a significant boost in power over its 1.6 liter siblings. Add to that disc brakes at all 4 wheels and you had better stopping power to rein in those extra horses. These were a technologically sophisticated model that provided Porsche’s customers with some of the best performance available all the while sporting the same elegant curves of every other 356. The one we see here comes in the particularly wonderful color combination of Oslo Blue over Tan.

1995 BMW 540i M-Sport

1995 BMW 540i M-Sport

1Towards the end of the E34 run, the 540i was offered in the US with an M-Sport package. This added sport seats, an M-tech body kit and mirrors plus suspension and steering components borrowed from the M5. Only 200 units were produced, and of those only 139 came equipped with the 6-speed manual gearbox.  So equipped, the 540i is an attractive and cheaper alternative to the M5, whose values we’ve seen creep up lately as the M-enthusiast crowd has rediscovered their love for the E34. This clean, low-mileage example is one of those manual cars.

In an attempt to challenge Mercedes-Benz’s R107 for chassis longevity, Volkswagen’s introduction of a more affordable German drop-top in the 1980 Rabbit Convertible stretched production until 1993. That meant that the A1 outlasted all of the A2 production cycle and was no squarely into the newly launched A3. Volkswagen introduced their replacement for the aging and renamed Cabriolet with the Mk.3 Cabrio in 1994. As with the A1, production again would extend beyond the A3 chassis life, because in 1999 VW introduced us to the fourth generation Golf. As with the 2nd generation, VW didn’t plan a convertible version for the Mk.4 – well, at least, not for the Golf, as convertible duties would be handed off to the New Beetle. But since the launch of the nostalgic Beetle Convertible waited until 2003, VW covered the gap with the “Mk3.5” refresh on the Cabrio. It received softened and rounded bumper covers, Mk.4 inspired lights, and a lightly revised interior. As with other VW models, there was a base GL model or the better equipped GLS, like today’s example:

I love the W210 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG ­— so much so that I bought two of them. I still have one and gave the other one to my father because he, too, loved it so much. He drives his everyday in all the elements, while mine stays tucked away in the garage under a cover and doesn’t come out unless the pollen level is under a certain limit and no one on my street is cutting grass. You can probably guess what kind of condition both cars are in by now but that’s indicative of the chassis. AMG or not, you were going to get out of the W210 what you put into it.

The W210 E55 is a special car. It’s the last AMG built before they started going crazy with Airmatic suspension, SBC brakes, superchargers – the list goes on. The W210 a simple equation: big engine, big brakes and big wide tires. Yes, you still got all the special edition stuff like different bumpers and side skirts, exclusive seats, steering wheel, gauge cluster and some wood that the non-AMG cars were left without. In addition to these special goodies, you got a chance at some options that you probably didn’t even know existed on the W210. That’s what kind of E55 we have for sale today in Dallas. So let’s check out this ultra-loaded example out.
