Motorsports Monday: 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

It’s been a little while since I’ve done a Motorsports Monday post and given my propensity for writing about the 911, that’s a little strange. Porsche itself has a long and storied racing history and the 911 in particular sort of exists in a class of its own. And Porsche has provided numerous models intended for racing and to meet homologation requirements over the years, though in many cases those models never made it to our shores. It seems natural then for those interested in doing a little racing to take what they had access to and build the racer they so desired. Still, cars like the one we see here, a 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe built to be a class G club racer, are becoming exceedingly more rare as the ravages of time slowly break them down and as the air-cooled market makes it seem foolish to extensively modify any air-cooled 911 that remains in nice condition. That is especially true of the 993, but man do these look good when given a few track focused modifications. I could easily be accused of thinking the 993 is too pretty, that it’s lost some of its aggressive edge, but its racing pedigree is easily revealed and in narrow-body form the 993 combines a sense of purpose with a lithe body.

2001 BMW M Coupe

Another week, another S54 powered BMW M Coupe. As a follow on to the 2001 M Coupe that Rob featured two weeks ago, here we have a similar vintage M Coupe with less miles wearing the it’s original equipment alloy wheels. Just over 1,000 S54 engined M Coupes were produced, with 678 making their way stateside between 2001 and 2002. Fewer modern cars have had the collectability factor that these Bimmers had out of the box. How high will values go? That remains to be seen.

2013 BMW 335i

In an age of technology which has distanced the driver from involvement in the driving experience, it’s nice to know you can still turn to a few manufacturers to get your kicks. The 3 series sedan is one of the few BMWs left which you can spec with a manual gearbox, and this 335i with a 6-speed manual represents the top of the lineup with the 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 producing just over 300 horsepower. This example comes equipped with the Sports Package, which included tighter suspension, sport seats, staggered size wheels and an oil cooler. While the 340i is now the top dog in the 3 series lineup, this 335i represents about just as much car at a sizable discount.

1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 – REVISIT

jg_800

The Polar Silver 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 we featured back in October is up for sale again, this time as a reserve auction. It appears it has also moved from a private seller to a dealer, which has provided us the benefit of much better pictures than we had with the original ad and those pictures show us that this 911 appears to have been well cared for. While not high mileage this Turbo 3.6 does have a few more miles on it than most that we come across so we’ll have to see where bidding ultimately finishes.

Noggy-off – 2001.5 v 2004 Audi S4 Avant

Audi established a new bar for fast wagons with the RS2 Avant, and the signature color of that model was termed “RS Blue”. Immediately, the vibrant hue was recognizable as the warning sign to other drivers that more lurked under the hood than most normal grocery getters. Audi would continue this trend and signature color with the new quattro GmbH-made S6 Plus a few years later. But in 2001, Audi made the exclusive color a bit more pedestrian by offering it on the B5 S4. Now termed “Nogaro Blue Pearl”, it developed an immediate fan following since then – as now – for most, purchasing either a RS2 or S6 Plus isn’t in the cards. Audi continued the shade on to the B6 platform, where it continued to be the defacto shade of speed until it was discontinued in the B7 chassis. While Audi has recently brought the color back into its lineup, for many the older cars still have a distinctive draw and Nogaro cars typically demand a premium. For some, that premium is heightened even more when the interior was opted with the Nogaro colored Alcantara. Add in Avant and 6-speed to the option list on these cars, and the collective Audi fanboy community draws a sharp breath as lips are bitten and pants decidedly tighten. As a treat, we have two examples to consider – which is more Nogtastic?
