1970 Porsche 911S Coupe

These days the demand for a hot 911 is nearly unmatched, especially for one of the air-cooled models. Whether it be a 911 Turbo or any of the variety of lightened and more powerful naturally aspirated variants these cars continue to command respect and adulation among Porsche enthusiasts. One of the first produced was the 911S. Introduced in 1967, the S combined more power, better braking and suspension, and a lower overall weight to produce one of best performing cars of its day, all the while still remaining comfortable and streetable enough for everyday use. The example featured here is a European delivery Blue Metallic 1970 Porsche 911S Coupe, restored by Aase Sales in Ohio, that shows 58,095 km (about 36,098 miles). For the 1970MY the entire 911 line had received a bump in engine displacement from 2.0 liters to 2.2 liters with the 911E and S now featuring Bosch multi-point injection.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe

As I was winding down what was quite a long week Friday evening, I happened to catch the original Thomas Crowne Affair on one of the upper cable channels. This was a fantastically scripted movie with one vehicle featured prominently throughout: a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 2-door sedan with coachwork by H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd. Built in very limited numbers, this was a gentleman’s express of epic proportions, with vast amounts of wood and leather to ensconce those fortunate passengers inside and a pushrod V8 under the bonnet with “adequate” horsepower. This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe for sale in California could almost be considered that car’s contemporary, but with a decided German slant. Even though it might look a bit classic, it was thoroughly modern, with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, Bosch fuel injection and four-wheel disc brakes. 1970 Porsche 911S

Sports cars are largely defined by the hot versions that have been produced. Whether that is fair or not it remains the case and was especially true of cars from the 1960s. For the 911 the first hot version, and the model that quickly moved the car into the ranks of the elite sports cars of its day, was the 911S released in 1967. As both a lighter and more powerful version of the 911 the S was sure to be a hit even if its greater power exacerbated the car’s already skittish and tail-happy nature. Porsche addressed that issue in 1969 by lengthening the wheelbase across the 911 range and then for 1970 displacement was increased from 2.0 liters to 2.2 liters, bringing horsepower of the S up to 180 along with an appreciable raise in torque. As this sort of elite sports car the S would only truly exist for another couple of years before being phased out entirely (at least until the 993), making these early examples some of the most highly prized of any 911 on the market. The example here is a beautifully restored Metallic Blue 1970 Porsche 911S, located in Ohio.

1970 Porsche 914/6 GT

There’s always those cars out there I fail to give a second look, but having been involved with GCFSB for some time now, it’s opened my eyes to a whole new world of classics. Case in point, the Porsche 914. What began as a VW/Porsche joint venture was initially looked down upon a bit by the 911 drivers of the world. Now the car has become a bit of a newly discovered darling of the collector set, given the market’s penchant for anything air-cooled out of Stuttgart. Most 914s you come across are the four-cylinder variants, but there was a six cylinder variant on offer in the form of the 914/6. This particular 914/6 for sale in Florida was built to Brumos Racing specifications, with factory steel flared fenders accentuating those Fuchs wheels shod with Goodyear F1s.

1970 BMW 2000

If the 2002 has developed a following far outside of the cult-status of many of the other BMW models, it’s sister is still relatively forgotten. Add two doors to the 2002 and you got the BMW 2000; with slight styling changes to the front and rear in addition to the 4 doors, these often-overlooked sedans are nonetheless equally stylish and neat to see. However, because they’re not in the limelight, a clean 2000 sedan will set you back significantly less than the nearly identical 2002; mid-range values on good examples of a 1970, like this one, are around $12,000 while the 2002 pushes closer to $18,000 or more. For my money, I actually prefer the look of the 4-door like this Granada Red survivor example:
