1970 BMW 2800CS Euro

Okay, I’m a little early. I wanted to celebrate hitting 2,800 “Likes” on our Facebook Fanpage with a BMW 2800CS, one of the prettiest cars BMW made. While we’re close, we’re not quite there – but hopefully this post and others help inspire people to read our page. In any event, the car. The 2800 took the basic formula of the New Class 2000CS and added slightly different styling touches and a larger motor. With around 170hp on tap, it was pretty powerful in its day and unlike many of the more recent coupes, was a relative lightweight. It was also quite pretty, one of the more timeless designs BMW produced. It managed to both be futuristic and classically proportioned, and really the 2000 and 2800 set the tone for BMW coupes for the next 20 plus years through the end of the E24 6-series production. This particular example presents well in classic light metallic blue, though it’s not its original color:

Motorsport Monday: 1970 Saab 96 Rally Car

Wondering what a SAAB 96 is doing here? Well, here’s a little known fact: the vaunted Audi Quattro won Rally Monte Carlo once; the SAAB 96 won it twice. But there was not much snow there, you say? Okay, how about Rally Sweden, where the 96 equaled the Quattro’s 4 victories? Still not convinced? How about the RAC Rally in Great Britain? Sure, the Audi won it three years on the trot – 1981, 1982 and 1983 – but then, so did the SAAB, in 1960, 1961 and 1962, with two more victories that followed. But great names drove the Audi, you say. Names like Stig Blomqvist Per Ekland, perhaps? Yup, they drove for the Swedes, too. But beyond the wins, there was something that was just neat and quirky about the 96; an idea that would see evolution right through the takeover of SAAB by General Motors. They always did things differently, and you know what? It worked, and we liked it, so today let’s look at a Swedish neighbor:

1970 Porsche 911T

Throughout these pages, I have extolled the virtues of Porsche’s 912 for its simplicity married to the classic 911 design. Here we have the car that effectively became the replacement for the 912 as Porsche’s entry-level rear-engined sports car, following the cessation of 912 production in 1969. While a 911T does not come at quite the cost savings of the 912 it nonetheless offers the most reasonable cost for anyone who must have a vintage long-hood 911 and values seem destined to appreciate at a steady rate that easily eclipses the 912. The 911T was first introduced as the entry-level 911 in 1967 featuring a 2.0 liter flat-six engine delivering 110 hp to the rear wheels through a standard 4-speed or optional 5-speed manual transmission. In 1970 engine displacement was increased to 2.2 liters with an appreciable rise in power to 125 hp. With only 2240 pounds to propel, performance of the 911T is capable, if not brisk, but still provides the driving dynamics and characteristics so highly desired by Porsche enthusiasts. 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe 4-speed manual

At the outset of the 1970s, the Mercedes-Benz model range was about to have an overhaul, with a new SL roadster and S class on the way. Meanwhile, the W111 coupes and convertibles would get one last refresh in the form of the 3.5 liter, M116 engine. This small displacement V8 would live on until the early 1990s in later 3.8 and 4.2 guise. While these M116 engined 280SE Coupes are rare, add in the manual gearbox and you have a car that is extremely exclusive. Some estimate that just over 100 were produced. This example was imported to the US via Italy in the 1980s and has covered just under 50,000 miles.

1970 Porsche 911T Coupe

While perusing used car listings there will always be certain cars that immediately grab your attention strictly on appearance alone. It’s a car or style that you weren’t looking for, but nonetheless your attention is held. Such was the case with this car, a 1970 Porsche 911T Coupe in a fantastic shade of Burgundy. Originally released in 1968, the 911T served as the entry-level 911. For the 1970 model year the 911 saw an across the board bump in displacement to a 2.2 liter flat-6 engine, which in the 911T produced 125 hp. While that power was delivered via a 4-speed manual as standard, the 5-speed manual of the 911E and 911S was available as an option on the T, and while the car featured here is short on information, we do know that it comes with the optional 5-speed manual transmission. While the T is not nearly as sought after as its more advanced siblings, especially the S, it still provides the same classic style and performance characteristics that 911 enthusiasts have come to cherish.
