The E63 AMG Estate we featured earlier isn’t an impractical car, but it’s hard to deny that it’s a bit over the top for most people. If speed isn’t your thing, you could always go the other direction and pick up a W123 diesel estate, such as this 1985 300TD for sale in Michigan from the same seller as the 300TE 4Matic we featured last week. With only 37,000 miles, this beauty is nowhere close to being broken in and is in like new condition, a superlative that is thrown about liberally but certainly applies in this case.

Need something to keep you busy in the continuing grey days of winter? How about a pair of 500SECs projects to keep you out of trouble? (Well actually this may get you into trouble, financially or with your significant other) Carter also noticed this ride and linked it off our Facebook page.
Here we have what appears to be yet another case of picking up the pieces where a previous enthusiast ran out of time, money, or interest, but the seller instead states that they are selling due to illness. This may mean that the projects aren’t as bad as the ones being sold because someone got in over their head. Eitherway though that picture above shows a once great car looking sad. Not horrible though, we’ve seen a lot worse, but look at it just sitting there in a pile of leaves all cold and alone.
What we actually have is a rare, but non-running rare Koenig widebody 500SEC and a not as rare, but running parts car.
4 CommentsGerman cars are know as being exact in their engineering, and even the model designation of the turbocharged E23 7 series takes this mantra to heart. This particular 745i does not, in fact, have a 4.5 liter inline-6 as suggested by the badge on the trunk. Rather, it designates that the turbocharged powerplant under the hood has 1.4 times the power output of the normally aspirated unit it is based on. These E23 7 series sedans had the same aggressive front snout as the beloved E24 6 series and moved the BMW game forward in terms of technology, with service interval indicators, anti-lock brakes and climate control systems appearing during the production run. The 745i Turbo was offered in North America between 1979 and 1986, first with a 3.2 liter inline six and then upgraded to the 3.4 unit that we see here. This example for sale in Georgia is a Euro market model that has the optional water buffalo leather, lending quite a unique air to the interior.

7 CommentsThe American poet Robert Frost once wrote: “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” Frankly, I can’t think of a better tagline for the Mercedes-Benz W123, either. It really does go on. And on. And on. We’re written a lot about these iconic Mercedes sedans, coupes and estates, but these cars have a timeless appeal backed up by frugal engines. This final year 300CD coupe has the 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-5 diesel under the hood. It might not be a terribly fast car, but it blends economy with a level of class you just can’t match in most modern cars. This particular car for sale in Arizona is a one-owner example with a low 64,500 miles on the clock.

5 CommentsMy love for obscure cars dictates my leaning towards one of my favorite Volkswagens of all time: the Quantum Syncro Wagon. Known as the Passat, Santana, Corsar and Carat in other markets, the Quantum was the choice for someone seeking German engineering in a mid-sized package on a budget. Curiously, Volkswagen only offered Syncro four-wheel drive in the Quantum Wagon, as it was the bigger seller. This car shared its drivetrain with the Audi 80 and required a completely new floorpan which relocated the gas tank and deleted the spare tire well. Mated exclusively to the 2.2 liter inline-5 engine, this was a very versatile machine popular with those in the snow belt.
Few of these Quantum Syncro Wagons survive in good condition, but they have a rabid following of enthusiasts. Rarely do you see a pre-facelift Quantum Syncro Wagon but here is one for sale in Seattle. A few items need doing but nothing too terrible to put off those handy with a wrench.
