Feature Listing: 1987 Porsche 930 Coupe

I still love a Black Porsche 930 Coupe. I will admit it isn’t an exciting color, but a clean black car in good condition still seems to possess something that attracts me even if I can’t quite describe why that is. On the 930, with its bulging aggressive lines and whale tail, I feel that black fits the persona of the car better than almost any other exterior color. I suppose if I really had my druthers, I’d prefer a non-black interior, but that might depend upon the cost difference. That brings us to the car we see here: a Black 1987 Porsche 930 Coupe with Black leather interior and 39,664 miles on it. By 1987 the 930 would be nearing the end of its run and in many ways it had come a long way since the first iterations left the Porsche factory in 1975. There were some weight gains over that time, but Porsche had long ago decided that its Turbo would be a showcase of the civility and refinement possible within a car so capable of exceptional performance. This one still has the 4-speed transmission of its forebears and remains capable of delivering all of the excitement its owners can handle.

1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro

s-l1600 (5)
As I fantasized the other week about rocking a Golf Country into the mountains, I didn’t really account for the limiting factors of a lifted hatchback. Yes, it can probably get you and a couple of friends over and through just about anything, but what about your stuff? Or your other friends? Hatchbacks are certainly known for utility, but when you start talking sleds, camp stoves, extra clothes, and maybe more than 4 people, you’re either going to have the biggest roof rack known to man or have to look at a bigger automobile.

Back, then, to most popular Syncro, the Vanagon! This isn’t a Westy, just a tintop, of which we’ve seen some decent examples before. An all-wheel drive tin box that can carry 7 comfortably, and this one has a burly cargo rack on top that can gather any and all snow toys you need. It’s not as fancy as some nor does it have the pop-top, but that cuts the price by over half. It’s not as immaculate as the Golf Country, with some general interior wear and a rebuilt engine and transmission a few years ago, but it looks pretty nice for 220k miles and sports some quality upgrades like Emu shocks and disc brakes. There’s plenty to do to make it cleaner and personalized, but it’s a great start on a van that could take winter adventures to the next level.

1987 BMW 535is

s-l1600
Ah, what a fun car to find right around the holidays. This 535is, resplendent in Santa’s Sleigh red. It’s about as clean as his sleigh would be leading up to the holidays too, with a decently redone interior and excellent respray sometime back. The E28 535is is an outstanding car, bringing a significant portion of the legendary M5’s allure at significantly reduced prices and a much wider selection of colors. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one this clean, with just 119k miles, but the huge caveat is the single-axis shifter, meaning it will be much more comfortable cruising rather than sprinting in the hills. But Santa needs something stylish, fast, and comfortable, and this E28 hits all the bases.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet – M491

I’ve had my eye on the market for the 3.2 Carrera of late after coming across a slew of them with very high prices. We’re seeing similar movements, though with more actual sales, with the market for the Porsche 930 as well. The car we see here, a Silver Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet with the M491 (Turbo-look) option package and 109,300 miles, walks a line between both of these worlds, but right now is avoiding the very high asking prices of those others. The pricing phenomenon with the 3.2 Carrera seems down primarily to some very-low-mileage examples coming up for sale, which obviously won’t really have much bearing on this one. We should keep in mind though that as an ’87 MY Carrera this M491-equipped 911 also has the G50 5-speed transmission and we don’t see quite as many of these around. These factors all combine to make this a pretty desirable 911 and if the condition is as the seller describes it should have plenty of life left in it.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – REVISIT

ag_640

The really pretty (and very expensive) Venetian Blue Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe we featured in early November is back up for sale – not surprisingly – and it’s even seen a reduction in its asking price! Ok, at $155,700 relatively speaking the price reduction is completely negligible as this remains a potentially market-setting 3.2 Carrera. That is, if anyone bites on this price. I suspect it won’t go anywhere in the near future, but it does make the other very high priced Carreras in this seller’s stable seem well priced in comparison. Maybe that’s exactly the point.
