Learn to cope: RHD 1988 BMW 325i Touring

If I’m honest, I’m not a huge fan of the entire E30 scene. I think it’s a bit overplayed, over-hyped and over-priced. Granted, they’re nice cars, but even though they’re slower I’d take a clean 4000 Quattro or Coupe GT over a 325i any day. There are two exceptions, though; the E30 M3 is of course a favorite of mine but firmly out of reach in any meaningful condition. The other exception is the Touring model – I’d love it if Audi had made a B2 quattro Avant, but they didn’t. Sure, there’s the Quantum Syncro wagon, but park one next to this 1988 325i Touring and for me the clear winner in looks is the BMW. In fact, it’s so much better looking to me than a Quantum, even the steering wheel on the “right” side wouldn’t bother me:

1988 Volkswagen Fox GL Wagon

One of my favorite Volkswagens from the 1980s is one that you rarely see on the roads anymore. The Fox Wagon. This was an oddity in the US lineup for only a couple of years, a compact, two-door shooting brake of an estate car that was courtesy of Volkswagen of Brazil, where it was sold as the Gol. These were a bit of a reprisal of the idea of the “people’s car” for VW, a basic, no frills model offering German engineering at a discount. While the wagon was discontinued after the 1990 model year, the model range would get a refresh, carrying on with the two and four door sedan models through 1993. This 1988 Wagon for sale in Florida is a chance to sample an almost forgotten model in recent Volkswagen memory.

1988 Porsche 930

The Porsche 930 is a fairly constant presence amongst these pages and for good reason. Its brash combination of performance and styling has held our attention for decades and images of these fantastic machines have found their way onto more than one bedroom wall. We always enjoy finding interesting examples and for me personally many times that means finding one in black. A black 930 has the presence to go with the diabolical dynamics and leaves no doubt that this is not a car to be taken lightly. This particular 930 comes from 1988, near the end of the model’s run, and has seen only 46,700 miles.

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

Turning our attention again to the 3.2 Carrera, here we have an example that is beginning to creep back into value territory, though the asking price is still higher than what we might hope to pay for a driver-quality 911. With a Diamond Blue Metallic exterior and Marine Blue leather interior this one even possesses a somewhat unique color combination that is compelling without being flashy. This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in New Jersey, with 105,744 miles on it comes from near the last year of the classic 911 design and given the mileage looks to be in quite good condition.

1988 BMW 535is

The 535is provides a lot of E28 bang for your bucks, with the spoilers and much of the handling improvements of the M5 along with a lot more color choices and lower maintenance costs. The M30 is a beast that can go for Mercedes-diesel-type miles, and all the while you’re cruising in one of my personal-favorite car designs. Today’s is a well-used example that has been cared for enough to still be a good buy. The 80s-BMW price bug may hit these some day, but for now they’re one of the best bargains out there as the M-cars and the E30 “is” models become coveted and values are driven up.
