Last week, Nate wrote up a great Tornado Red Scirocco 16V, and while I disagree with his claim that it’s more attractive than the Audi Coupe, otherwise we see eye to eye – these are great little performance hatchbacks that can be run on a budget. Unfortunately, nearly everyone in the VW world already discovered that and finding clean, unmolested examples is quite difficult. Nate longed for some teardrop wheels on his example, and I’m happy to oblige with today’s super clean example, replete with the nicer Euro-bits, too:

The Volkswagen Fox was another interesting Brazilian import; called the “Gol” in other markets, the Fox was the new entry level car for Volkswagen in the late 1980s. With a low base price, many were without options but they got great fuel economy and offered a taste of Germany (albeit flavored in Brazil) for little money. A favorite amongst enthusiasts were the somewhat rare 2-door wagons, which offered one of the largest rear quarter windows ever produced and plenty of space to haul your load – slowly:

1 CommentOne of the most popular automotive forbidden fruits for US car enthusiasts is the BMW E30 3 series Touring. Now over 25 years old and eligible for importation, it seems that a steady stream of these small estate cars are arriving on these shores. For E30 fans who may have given up their beloved rides years ago with the pressures of family and a changing lifestyle, this car solves many of those space needs. There was even a four-wheel drive variant available for those who may need added traction, but we have yet to come across one in the US. Imported from England last year, this right-hand drive 1988 325i Touring for sale in Florida is an original car with some tasteful modifications.

Comments closedIt’s been a long time since I’ve written up a Scirocco, but this red one is a great way to get back into it. The main thing the Scirocco gives up to the Audi Ur-Quattro for me is the amount of wheels driving; it wins for me in the looks department. Refreshingly stock and with less than 140k miles, this could be a great buy.

3 CommentsAs one who enjoys an oddball motor, I get distracted every time I see a Volvo 480ES. Sort of a hatchback with a bit of shooting brake in its profile, this car was the spiritual successor to the P1800ES of the 1970s. The 480 was an odd duck in the Volvo lineup during the 1980s and into the mid 1990s, manufactured in The Netherlands at the factory that gave us the Daf. This would be the first front-wheel drive Volvo and injected a sporty attitude into the model range at a time where the company was still designing cars with a straightedge and #2 pencil. This 480ES for sale near Hannover, Germany has under 40,000 miles on the clock, making it quite a rarity as few are left in this condition.
