1993 Porsche 928GTS

$_4 (1)

I decided to do something a little different this morning and take a look at this 1993 Porsche 928GTS. This is not the ordinary, low mileage gem that we tend to feature, but a GTS that wears some battle scars and has covered an impressive 140,000 miles. It’s no secret these cars are well engineered and can go the distance, but with values on the rise for these grand touring machines, collectors are coveting them to a point these will start approaching air-cooled 911 Turbo money. Are you brave enough to take on a high mileage shark that needs a little TLC? Read further…

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300TE

$_4 (1)

We’re in the midst of planning another Wagon Week here at GCFSB, but until then, let’s take a look at one of our favorite 5-doors, the Mercedes-Benz W124 estate. Long before SUVs like the ML, GL and GLK roamed the earth, Mercedes’ mainstream utility vehicle was their mid-sized estate vehicle. While a few coach builders produced estate variants after World War II, Mercedes’ first in-house effort was the W123 estate of the late 1970s. This car has become the darling of the biodiesel set, attracting folks looking for a bit of panache with their free motoring. The W124 estate did an excellent job of picking up where the W123 left off, combining the classic hallmarks of Mercedes-Benz style with a good balance of luxury, utility and durability that kept customers coming back to the showrooms. This W124 estate for sale in Florida has escaped the ravages of hard duty, showing just under 80,000 miles on the odometer.

1993 Porsche 928GTS – REVISIT

The 1993 Porsche 928GTS we featured last September has cropped up for sale once again, the asking price unchanged. Of all the 928s, the market for the GTS is strong, especially when equipped with the manual gearbox. Will this minter of a V8 Porsche find a home this time around?

1993 BMW M5

It’s hard to find a single owner “M” car these days, even harder to find one that was assembled by a single person. This 1993 BMW M5 checks both those boxes and has the added bonus of having traveled a paltry 9,880 miles in its 22 year lifespan. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t get sticker shock when I reviewed this listing. I get it, this is an extremely rare opportunity to drive a legendary vehicle in true showroom condition. If I had $63k to spend on a car I would go out and snatch this thing up right now. I mean, you’d have to be crazy to get a comparably priced new BMW instead of this car. By the time you put any kind of major miles on it the value will have only held steady or decreased very little. Aside from just being a fun to drive, final year North American M5’s are highly sought after for their minor cosmetic upgrades like the iconic “Throwing Star” wheels and the Shadowline Exterior package. The fact that these were the last handbuilt BMW’s available in America only adds to this car’s intriguing portfolio. Seriously, there’s so much to love about this car from an investment standpoint that you almost forget that it’s also just a damn fine car to drive.

The E34 M5 was powered by the S38 inline-6, the last M5 motor to share DNA with the legendary BMW Motorsport engines. It made 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque; not crazy by today’s standards but it’s enough to put a big old smile on your face. Europe saw powered bumped to 335 hp in ’91 and the addition of a 6-speed manual transmission in ’95 because it’s Europe and they get all the good stuff. Speaking of which, in 1992 the folks at M Division built their first estate car and it remains, in my humble opinion, the coolest fast wagon in the history of fast wagons. I will endeavor to find a solid example to write about in the near future as we are only two years away from being able to legally import those beauties. For now we’ll just have to make due with sedan examples like this one, I suppose it could be worse.

Coupe Week: 1993 Porsche 968

$_4 (1)

We’ve saved the best for last for Coupe Week here at GCFSB. Porsche is a company with a colorful history. These days, though, not much emerges from Stuttgart that captures my imagination like the sports cars of my youth. Call me nostalgic, but I don’t aspire to own an SUV with an turbo badge on its rump, no matter how fast or capable it is. Then again, I am attracted to the odd special edition 911 and the new Cayman GT4 that recently dropped is rather tasty with its inclusion of a clutch pedal.

Always one to explore the hypotheticals, what if Porsche continued to develop some of the platforms of their past? The front engine, four cylinder experiment ended after an almost two decade run in 1995 with the 968 Coupe and Cabriolet. This was an extremely versatile platform, giving us everything from basic 924s to the beastly 944 Cup Cars of the late 1980s. This 968 Coupe for sale in Miami strikes a good balance between collector piece and high mileage runner and has the desirable 6-speed manual gearbox.
