1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

The allure of a Cabriolet is fairly obvious though I do think it is difficult to accurately gauge that appeal until you have spent a warm afternoon enjoying a winding country or mountain road behind the wheel of a fantastic sports car. No doubt, there are negatives to owning a convertible, but there also is a way in which the reality of those near perfect drives easily exceeds whatever preconceived notions we might have had regarding what makes open-top motoring so popular. And right now I want nothing more than to take one of those drives. I have a few variants of the 993 I plan to feature this week, but I will begin with this beautiful, very low-mileage, Cabriolet. Here we have an Aventurine Green Metallic 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in San Diego, with a mere 3,200 miles on it. It’s anybody’s guess how such a wonderful 993 saw so few miles residing in San Diego, but here it sits in pristine condition ready to join someone else’s collection.

1995 BMW 540i Sport

One car that seems to resonate with readers here at GCFSB is the E34 BMW 5 series. This car was a bit of a bridge between the older and newer era of BMW. With the help of famed automotive designer, J Mays, few cars really got their proportions so right. The E39 5 series to follow was indeed an evolution of this design which lasted right into the new millennium. One of our favorite E34s is this car here, the 540i Sport, offered during the final production year, 1995. With the disappearance of the M5 from the lineup in 1993, there was a void to fill. US customers got most of the M5 goodies mixed in with BMW’s new 4.0 liter V8. This example for sale in Illinois has the favored 6-speed manual gearbox and is a rather tempting piece indeed for the price.

1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Clubsport

This post along with the next one will feature a pair of very rare, very fast, and very expensive air-cooled Porsches. These are the crème de la crème of the 911 line, at least when we combine their performance with their value and rarity. There are certainly rarer and more valuable 911s, but with time these too could reach similar heights. We will begin with this Guards Red 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Clubsport. The Carrera RS moniker is perhaps Porsche’s most highly regarded and the ’73 Carrera RS the most sought after 911. As models intended to meet homologation requirements they are about as no frills as a modern Porsche will get, yet fitted with the appropriate aerodynamic and interior necessities to improve handling and insure driver safety. For the 993 Carrera RS, displacement was bumped to 3.8 liters – up from 3.6 liters – bringing horsepower up to an even 300, all tasked with propelling a car weighing 100 kilograms less than the standard Carrera. The transmission, braking and suspension also received appropriate modifications. For the Clubsport, comforts such as the carpet, radio, A/C, and power windows were deleted and a roll cage added to further increase the car’s track-going personality. Curiously, this particular Clubsport has retained its A/C, setting it apart – though maybe not in a good way – from other Clubsport models.

30 Years of the W124 – A Tribute

Thirty years have passed since the introduction of the W124 Mercedes-Benz E-class range. This is a car that had big shoes to fill, as the W123 range was beloved the world over for its quality, durability and rock solid diesel engines. Arriving in the middle of the 1980s, this new mid-sized Mercedes designed by Bruno Sacco brought the company’s traditional styling hallmarks into a new era. This car would spawn coupe, cabriolet and estate variants as well as introduce four-wheel drive as an option and a few high performance V8 variants. The W124 would carry on into the mid-1990s, succeeded by the W210 E-class with its radical four-headlamp front profile.

Since we’re in the middle of winter in many parts of the US, we’ll start off by looking at this 1991 300E 4Matic for sale in California offered at no reserve.

1995 BMW 525i Touring

We’ve given the E39 touring a lot of love here at GCFSB, but the E34 is a classic, handsome longroof that would still serve the purposes of a family man who likes a little old-fashioned German luxury. Today’s black-on-tan example looks pretty darn good for a 20 year-old car, having covered roughly 5k miles per year. It may not be the sportiest of BMW wagons, coming with the 4-speed auto mated to the 2.5-liter M20, but it’s a great hauler that is a step up from the ubiquitous Volvo 240 alternative.
