With the 993, Porsche took a decidedly different path when it came to the Targa model. Gone was the famous roll hoop and targa panel over the front seats in favor of a large glass roof that slid open and concealed itself behind the rear window. The traditional Targa profile reappeared with the current generation 991, with a complex mechanism to handle the removable top. Ever one to favor simplicity, I could only imagine what such a mechanism would cost should it fail years down the road. The 993 Targa had what some would consider a large sunroof which retracted behind the rear window. Some complained of decreased rear visibility due to the glass panel’s tint, but others reveled in the open air enjoyment provided while keeping much of the Carrera’s signature roofline in tact. This 911 Carrera Targa for sale in New York is a one-owner example owned by a member of the Porsche Club of America, showing less than 40,000 miles on the odometer.

With a new generation of Porsche’s evergreen sports car, the 911, upon us, now is a good time to look back at a more simple time, when the basic 911 was normally aspirated and air-cooled. This 993 for sale in Arizona is not a low-mileage collector car, but one that has certainly seen some action over two decades but looking no worse for wear. A new 911 will run you almost $90,000. For half of that ask, why not go vintage?

1996 BMW 725tds

With all this controversy surrounding the Volkswagen Group and the EPA investigation regarding its diesel engines, who knows what the future holds for oil burners in the US. BMW was relatively late to the diesel game, although they did offer a diesel powerplant in the E28 5 series back in the 1980s. However, the 1990s were petrol only for the US market. So that begs the question: how did this 725tds make its way stateside. Cars like this under 25 years old that weren’t originally intended for US sale are always a risk in the used market, but somehow, this one got registered in California, a state known for its strict emissions rules.

1996 Volvo 850 R Estate

Fashion icon Iris Apfel was noted for saying “life is gray and dull and you might as well have a little fun when you dress and amuse people.” Adapt this quote to automobiles and you are speaking my language. So much of what we see offered today by manufacturers is boring and drab, trying to maximize profit while giving consumers the vague whiff of individuality. There are still a few cars out there which will help you stand out. Continuing on with the Swedish theme I seem to be on this week, Volvo has been one of the few brands to offer what has become a niche vehicle with a rabid following: the performance estate. These cars are an attempt at offering the family man his cake and allowing him to eat it, too. And with this formula comes a bit of whimsy.

It all started in the 1980s when they started turbocharging their five-door offerings. Then, in the 1990s, Volvo went all out and fielded an 850 Estate in the British Touring Car Championship, with the help of Tom Walkinshaw Racing. This spawned a street version, the 850 T-5R. With an engine developed in conjunction with Porsche, this car packed 243 horsepower and was available in both sedan and estate form. The T-5R was then succeeded by the 850 R, essentially the same car with some improvements. This 850 R for sale in Kentucky is a rare sight, an example in very good condition with just 65,000 miles on the clock. Want some sport with your utility? Read further.

1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

Here’s a rare thing: could it be that with this car we’ve stumbled upon a Porsche 993 Turbo that is priced reasonably? These days when I encounter a 993TT with an asking price below $160K I immediately wonder what is wrong with it. And I asked the same question about this example as well, yet nothing stands out. In addition, this is a paint-to-sample 993TT so it is sure to be of the more rare variety. As always, asking prices aren’t necessarily reflective of selling prices, but there have been examples of the 993TT selling a decent bit above the asking price here. Some of those are ultra-low mileage, but all-in-all this one feels like a reasonable ask. It isn’t cheap, or being undervalued, but it does seem reasonable and may even represent a nice value long term given where the Turbo market appears headed. A thorough investigation to insure there truly is nothing wrong with it surely is warranted, but from what we see here it presents very well.
