1997 BMW M3 Coupe with 45,000 Miles

The value of E36 M3s has been much debated over the past few years, with detractors snickering and deriding every asking price and speculators suggesting their worth is many times the average selling price. While it’s true you can find cheap E36 M3s, the question remains – where is the market going on these cars? The result of their relatively low value for such a protracted period means that today there just aren’t the glut of good examples that there once were, so when a really nice one comes along, now too do the bids. Case in point – today’s 1997 Coupe. A quick search of my local Craigslist ads suggests I can buy one of these for $6,500. No, actually, I can buy four of them, all for $6,500 (or less). So why would I pay more for this one?

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

These days we’re so used to Porsche producing a plethora of different 911 models that if you can’t find one to suit your needs then you might just be too picky. Or never really wanted a 911 to begin with. A quick trip over to Porsche’s website shows sixteen different variants of the 911 from which buyers can choose and if rear-engine isn’t your thing there are also four different Cayman models. This sort of selection has not always been the case. The 964 began the expansion of model variety, but it was with the 993 that we really began to see the sort of diversity in the lineup we see now. One of those models first introduced for the 993 is the model we have here: the Carrera 4S. The Carrera 4 itself first came about with the debut of the 964, but the S models didn’t make an appearance until the 993 took the stage. Like the M491-equipped Carreras of the mid- to late-80s the Carrera 4S effectively served as the Turbo-look model of the 911 line, sharing the bodywork, suspension and braking of the Turbo, though lacking the Turbo’s whale tail and retaining the standard naturally aspirated engine of the rest of the 911 line. The one we see here is a very pretty Guards Red 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, located in New Jersey, with Savannah Beige leather interior and 52,894 miles on it.

Tuner Tuesday: 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo Andial 3.8

Outside of our usual perusing of eBay we all have a variety of other sites we frequent when looking for interesting cars to feature. Some of the sites are sellers whose inventory is a constant array of amazing options and truthfully we could probably just run down the entire inventory and feature everything. But that’s not really what we try to do. That said, at times certain cars stand out so much that we can’t just pass by them. As I hope anyone reading this will agree, this is one of those cars: a paint-to-sample Blood Orange 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo that early in its life was shipped off to Andial for their 3.8 liter twin-plug conversion. On the engine side, the Andial conversion raises horsepower to 575 on 93 octane gas and 625 on race fuel. But it isn’t just an engine. Upgraded suspension and braking helps control the extra power and a sport clutch and single-mass flywheel help deliver that power to all four wheels. While perhaps not as all out and well known as a RUF conversion, the Andial conversions are special in their own right and on the 993 Turbo a rare treat to see.

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

I’ve talked before on these pages about a 911’s presence when seen in traffic. It’s a difficult concept to articulate, but I think we all understand the idea: you see a car approaching in the distance with little more than the headlights and front end to hint at what it is and some cars stand out more so than others. The 964 and 993 both do this for me in ways that current 911s, and even the classic 911, fail to do. Each model does it in a different way, but it’s apparent none the less. My attention is grabbed immediately and my appreciation for those great cars increases all the more. For whatever reason I don’t see 993 Coupes very often; my area seems to have more Cabriolets. Alas. Anyway, unlike many models I really like lighter colors on the 993. The lighter shades help accentuate the 911’s graceful curves and while they don’t make for as aggressive an appearance they certainly are beautiful. The example here is no different: a Pastel Yellow 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in California, with Cashmere Beige leather interior and 32,483 miles on it.

1997 Audi A6 Avant S6 Plus Conversion – REVISIT

One of the more amazing custom vehicles I’ve come across in my time writing here is also one of the most discrete. Upon seeing this Volcano Mica Audi Avant, most would probably dismiss it as just another S6 – but the secret identity of this wünderwagon lies beneath the subtle exterior upgrades. Not only did it start life as a mild-mannered A6, but the conversion to an S car went one step farther than normal in mimicing the European-market S6 Plus. The creation is unique, impressive, and semi-inexplicably still for sale today, some 6 months after I originally looked at it:
