The 993 is for many a favorite. Stylistically, it shows the culmination of 30 years of subtle changes and tweaks, because while it no longer wore the classic 911 body it undeniably clung to those roots. The proportions were just right, the weight remained reasonably low and the engine provided the unmistakable clatter that could only be produced by an air-cooled engine. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 is an icon of an icon. Purists decried the arrival of the “grown up” A3 chassis Golf and Vento, sold as the Jetta in North America. It was expensive, it was heavy (relative to the A1 and A2 chassis, anyway) and the performance was dulled – that was, until the introduction of the GLX model that replaced the earlier GLi models. Now sporting the VR6 that had debuted in the Corrado a few years earlier, the GLX was all around a screamer. It might have been heavier than the GLi had been, but it was quicker to 60, quieter on the highway, more comfortable and better in crashes (if things went south), and returned close to the same fuel economy as the thirsty, buzzy and boxy 16V had. The Jetta in many ways helped to save Volkswagen, too – being one of the highest sellers since the Beetle, it was insanely popular and seemed to be the defacto college car of choice for both men and women. Because of that, many of these Jettas fell into disrepair or were totaled, so it’s rare to find a lower mile and clean GLX these days:

3 CommentsThe R129 SL still had a bit of life left in it as it entered the late 1990s, but 1997 would be the end for the six-cylinder SL in the US market. Before the SL320 would leave the market, a special edition model would appear to commemorate 40 years of the 300SL, the 40th Anniversary Edition SL. Only 250 SL320 models came with this package, along with 500 of the SL500. The SL500 would feature Crimson Metallic with Chestnut interior and the SL320, like you see here, would be offered in Quartz Blue with a gray interior and royal maple wood trim. This wood trim was an odd choice, as it appeared more like marble than wood. I wasn’t a particular fan of it, but it is certainly different. If you’re looking for an SL that stands out from the crowd, this SL320 for sale in Arizona would be a good selection.

Long considered the weakest of the super-sedans of the early to mid 1990s, the quattro has since created a legend of its own for the way it can shrug off miles that would bury other cars, the way it can handle supercar levels of power from a seemingly too-small displacement turbo motor, and the subdued fury with which it rolls down the road. Like the M5 and 500E, the S6 and it’s older brother S4 have presence that few other cars can achieve. Long one of our favorites at GCFSB, the S6 is also one of the best values currently in classic German motoring with most available for well under $10,000. Today, thanks to our reader John, we have a roundup of S6s in various states of tune and condition as well as color – which would be your choice?

6 CommentsIf the Speed Yellow C2S featured yesterday wasn’t attention-grabbing enough, or you just find a standard Carrera to be a bit slow, then perhaps this car will suit your needs. This 1997 Porsche 993 Turbo is somewhat of a mutt, though I mean that in the most positive sense. The front spoiler and rear wing were grabbed from the GT2 and surround a tuned 993 Turbo S engine. The Turbo S was only produced during the final production year of the 993 and housed a 3.6 liter twin-turbocharged flat-six delivering 424 hp to all four wheels. These were then combined with a variety of other components from the Porsche parts bin and from the respective tuners to produce a car capable of 530hp. The total package is pretty stunning and sure to be one of the better looking and better performing tuned Porsches available.
