1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Let’s continue looking at the 3.2 Carrera and again here we will look at one that comes in a wonderful light metallic paint. In this case we have an Iris Blue Metallic 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Indiana, with 48,908 miles on it. While many of my recent posts of a 911SC or 3.2 Carrera have been concerned with searching for reasonable value this one surely will straddle a middle ground. As a pre-G50 Carrera this one at least comes from one of the model years where value typically resides, but having traveled fewer than 50K miles it should garner plenty of attention. A mileage premium, of course, is much tougher to deal with as it can restrict one’s ability to enjoy such a fine car and as such many would exclude a car like this one from consideration. At least amongst those trying to balance value with pleasure. For others, who would view this 911 as a potential investment it has a lot to offer and perhaps might even be had without having to reach too deeply into one’s pockets. That’s more or less where the 3.2 Carrera resides these days. Excellent examples command serious attention, but there will always be a few out there that provide a nice balance of attractiveness, performance, and reasonable cost.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

I will continue my pursuit of reasonable value 911s with another 3.2 Carrera and, in this case, one of the prettiest color combinations that we come across throughout the model range. We have seen a couple of Cassis Red Carreras, including a Targa offered for sale by one of our readers, and with every one we come across I remain struck by the color. Certainly, this isn’t as aggressive or eye-catching as other colors in the range, but it conveys a subtle beauty and variability that really encourages us to linger over the car’s lines. Like with many of the lighter metallic hues, none of the lines are hidden, rather the curves stand out reflecting different aspects in shade and sun. With this being a Carrera Coupe we also now have featured an example from the entire range: 930, Targa, Cabriolet, and Coupe. Like the last couple of Cassis Red examples we have seen this one comes with a Burgundy interior, which works very well with the Cassis Red exterior. So here we have a Cassis Red over Burgundy 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Tennessee, with 85K miles on it.

James May’s 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Fans of the BBC motoring show Top Gear are familiar with the travails the show has gone through over the years and I assume are aware of its current status due principally to Jeremy Clarkson’s constant ability to cause problems. Always found in the midst of Jeremy’s bellowing and Hammond’s whining stood James May, otherwise known as Captain Slow. As a constant source of jabs from his two ridiculous co-presenters, May provided balance to the show, but behind the staid exterior was a genuine motoring enthusiast who has owned a number of interesting, and fast, cars and bikes over the years. Some of his machines have made appearances on Top Gear itself, while others have appeared in separate one-off shows he has been a part of during his Top Gear tenure. One of those, his Guards Red 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with just under 55K kilometers on it, will be put up for auction at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday, June 26. Among cars with famous owners this Carrera is somewhat unique in that it is currently owned by James rather than being a car that is an owner or two removed from its famous owner’s stewardship. For fans of the show, that makes this low-mileage Carrera just that extra bit more special.

1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

For the second of my value-911 posts I will move on to the model that followed upon the success of the 911SC. There is little that separates the 3.2 Carrera aesthetically from its predecessor, so for those in love with the design of the G-Series 911 in general either model makes for an excellent option. As the model name implies, the fundamental distinguishing characteristic of these 911s is their 3.2 liter flat-six as an upgrade over the 3.0 liter engine of the SC. Both engines are fantastically reliable when maintained properly and though their overall character may show small differences these two models stand shoulder to shoulder on nearly every 911 enthusiast’s list of cars to own. With the 3.2 Carrera available from 1984-1989, I have purposely chosen an example from the years prior to 1987 as the change to the G50 5-speed transmission for that model year has garnered the later models quite a bit more attention and as such prices can rise dramatically relative to their earlier peers. The particular example we see here, a Guards Red 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa located in California with 42K miles on it, will come at a premium due to its low mileage, but it seemed too nice to pass up and ultimately, even with the higher initial cost, it should stand an excellent chance of maintaining, or even gaining, in value over the course of its ownership.

1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – M491

We have featured a decent number of M491-equipped 911s and as the air-cooled market has continued its upward trend we have seen more and more of them pop up for sale. The M491 option package was conceived as a way to provide 911 customers in the US market a performance option that resembled the 930, but retained the standard Carrera’s naturally-aspirated 3.2 liter flat-six. That option package, in appropriate fashion, was dubbed the “Turbo Look” package. It was first made available in 1984 during the 930’s six-year hiatus from the US market and continued to be available, though was selected in far fewer numbers, even once the Turbo returned in 1986. The package included the Turbo’s front and rear spoilers along with its wider rear, complete with 930 suspension, braking, and wheels. Even without the extra power of the Turbo the M491 package was popular among enthusiasts for its superior handling and braking and many of these 911s saw a good deal of track time. It is only in recent years that their collectability has been recognized, but due to their performance focus even fewer of these already rare examples remain in excellent condition. For any prospective 911 owner desiring the appearance, handling, and braking of the Turbo, but without the highly-strung and maintenance intensive turbocharged engine the Turbo-Look Carrera makes for an attractive option. The example we see here comes from the second year of the package’s availability: a Nugget Brown Metallic 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Los Angeles, with Champagne leather interior and 92,863 miles on it.
