Frequent commenters and readers of these pages will have a passing familiarity with the car seen here as it comes to us by way of our reader Howard, who has decided to test the waters with his Cassis Red over Burgundy 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa. We have heard about this car and it is nice to finally see it. Cassis Red is a rare color that is absolutely beautiful and I have previously featured a Cassis Red 930 Coupe, remarking in that feature that the color somewhat stood in opposition to the character of the 930 itself. I think here, on a Carrera Targa, the color works perfectly, though I am slightly biased as I love lighter colored Targas in general. I also really like the look with the larger Lindsey Fuchs wheels, but for those who prefer the original appearance the original wheels can be included in the sale. With around 65K miles there’s certainly a ton of life left in it too.

This is going to be a little bit of a quick-hitter, though we should not take that to suggest there are serious flaws with this 911. Rather, I’m mostly struck by the price this auction has reached. Here we have a Platinum Metallic 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in California, with a Brown interior and 36,550 miles on it. There is a ton to love about this car. It comes in an absolutely fantastic color combination, which we don’t come across often, that is both very striking yet also somewhat subtle. It presents really well inside and out and I’m particularly fond of the interior color and the way it contrasts with the exterior. The mileage is also very low. But this auction currently sits at $69,991. For a 1984 Carrera. Unsurprisingly, this has met the reserve and I was fairly stunned when I saw it. I’m used to very high asking prices for this sort of car; I’m far less used to seeing one actually sell.

8 CommentsI have focused much more on the value end of the 911 spectrum this week and the car featured here falls into a bit of a middle position along that scale. The 1983 and 1984 model years tend to represent the best value opportunities depending upon whether you would prefer the 911SC or the 3.2 Carrera. You cannot really go wrong with either, but each has its own personality that may suit some better than others. Overall, however, the key is finding one in the condition and with the mileage that makes you most comfortable – and that fits within your budget. Here we have one from the lower-mileage section of the market: a Grand Prix White 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Florida, with 59,900 miles on it. These are the 911s that, for many of us, invoke the most nostalgia for the marque and they came along at an important time for the model itself. That they can still be had for fairly reasonable values makes them all the better.

Through a combination of a good leading picture and a particular model that, whether I realize it or not, happens to be just the sort of thing I’m looking for, certain ads draw me in and lead to further investigation. Sometimes the joy ends there. With others, like the car we see here, it ends up deserving the extra attention. Here we have a Black 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in California, with 53,115 miles on it. Black and Tan (or in this case, Black and Champagne) remains one of my all time favorite combinations and on a Cabriolet it works particularly well since the contrast is made more apparent once the top is dropped. This isn’t a striking combination so much as it is a classic combination. And on the 3.2 Carrera it’s a combination that shows really nicely. With warmer days nearly at hand now is just the time to get into an open-top car!

Comments closedI am clearly feeling a yearning for Spring as I continue to come across open-top cars that attract my attention. Of course the Speedster is no standard Cabriolet, nor would it be the car to search out if one desires to spend any significant time enjoying top-down motoring. The Speedster has always been a valuable collector car and with those values increasing significantly over the past year a car such as this one is resigned to spending a significant portion of its life in a garage. The 911 Speedster marked the rebirth of this short-lived Porsche icon with multiple incarnations of the model having followed it. But it is this original re-release that stands as one of the more significant models produced and the 911 Speedster also did double duty as the send-off for the classic 911 in general. They aren’t as pure and no frills as the original 356 Speedster, but Porsche had progressed far enough that such an entry-level model was no longer necessary and these serve more as an homage than an attempt at a recreation. The particular example we see here is a Guards Red 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster, located in St. Louis, with Beige leather interior and 40,504 miles on it.
