A lot of them were produced, they have a strong enthusiast following and a large aftermarket scene allows owners a variety of ways to customize their ride. A new hunt of mine is finding affordable E30s with solid potential. The cleanest of the quintessential sports sedan have become quite valuable, but there are still some reasonable examples lurking out there. The “s” models, in both “eta” and standard “i” form, provide outstanding handling with varying levels of power. One path for finding inexpensive classics is being open to high-mileage survivors, of which we have two today. Both have well above 200k miles and the “s” package, but one has the venerable 2.5 liter inline-6 while the other comes with the larger-and-slower 2.7l of the 325e. E30s are ripe for many engine swaps, from stock to extreme, so buying a low-price, high-mileage example provides a great foundation for a project.

Yes, we realize that clean, moderately-miled E30s are few and far between these days, and yes, we realize that they were plentiful when you started searching and now all of sudden fanboys and LeMons racers have taken them all.
Ok, ok, ok… you may enter the BiddingDome. The reserve is on, but we are confident you will clear that first hurdle with aplomb. Soak in the low miles, and imagine yourself bathing in almost 25 years of records. Imagine the clean, leathery smell of the reupholstered seats, and feeling the balance of inline-6, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive sedan under your butt.
Sure, the last one you saw this clean went for $8k, and it has a cracked dash, so maybe you can just be patient. But at that rate, it’ll appreciate, so you might as well just pull the trigger now. Not buying this car is losing you money…”

1 CommentThis particular BMW 325is brings back a lot of memories for me, as it is almost identical to my first car, an Alpine White 325is. Mine was of 1988 vintage with the larger bumpers, tan leather interior and slightly smaller basketweave BBS wheels with gold centers. A great car that was, and this ’89 example for sale in Georgia has me pining for another E30. With the slimmer bumpers and nicely contrasting red leather interior, this one is a looker and a decent alternative to those who pine after an E30 M3 but are on a budget.
