Over the past 20 years since I obtained my driver’s license, I’ve owned six cars. That’s not a whole lot for someone writing on a car enthusiast site. So when it comes to ownership experiences, my scope is a bit limited. However, the Mercedes-Benz 400E is a car I’m familiar with, as my father owned one for a time during my formative years. Replacing a 1992 190E 2.6 that was totaled in an accident, the 1992 400E that found its way into our household was an altogether different beast. It had the same Mercedes qualities we had come to know and love over the years. This was Mercedes’ first crack at the V8, mid-sized luxury segment and while it might have looked a bit staid when it debuted, is styling has aged well. This 1992 400E for sale in Idaho comes to us from a longtime reader, Max, who has owned his fair share of impressive machinery. Sold new in Hawaii, this car has clocked 114,000 miles and is a rust-free, well-preserved driver.

Trio of Affordable W124s: 400E, 300D and 260E

1After I wrote up a nice looking W124 the other week, a few of our enterprising readers did some further digging and uncovered a number of discrepancies in the car’s history, suggesting it wasn’t such a great deal after all. To try to make up for it I’ve found three more examples of the venerable old E-class for consideration this week. What these cars have in common is that they all present nicely in the ads, appear to have been well cared for by their previous owners and are all priced very competitively. Hopefully at least one of these is a winner. First up is this white 400E.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E

While it’s a model that’s rather forgotten to this day, the 400E was the car that brought the V8 engine into the mid-sized E-class sedan and one with which I have a personal relationship. My father bought a 1992 400E when I was in college and ran it for a while until the new MINIs appeared in early 2002 and he decided to bring back a little nostalgia in his life from his autocross years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While I favored the 190E 2.6 my father previously drove, there were things to enjoy about the 400E, mainly the lusty eight-cylinder lump under the hood. This 400E for sale in California is looking rather crisp for a car with over 150,000 miles and offers a lot of brawn for the buck.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E

Outside of the AMG tuned model, it’s no longer possible for US customers to spec an E-class sedan with a V8 engine. I was surprised to come across this fact the last time I logged on to Mercedes’ USA website. This might seem rather alarming, however, manufacturers have advanced technology to the point where V6 engines, some with the benefit of turbocharging, can produce V8 levels of power with greater economy. Over 20 years ago, the E-class was graced with its first eight-cylinder powerplant, in the form of the M119, a twin-cam, 32-valve V8. Thus, the 400E was born. While the W124 would bow out of the lineup in 1995, the V8 gave this sedan a shot in the arm it needed to compete with newfound competition from the Asian manufacturers. Unlike the Porsche built, performance minded 500E, it’s rather hard to find a 400E in good shape these days. However, this 400E for sale in Michigan looks sharp with larger 16″ wheels in the stock pattern with its lower body cladding painted to match.
