We feature the Porsche 930 with a fair degree of regularity here at GCFSB as it remains a long-time favorite of a few of the writers (and it’s a particular favorite of mine). Thus we naturally gravitate toward these extremely capable machines both for their prodigious performance and also their aggressively ’80s style. Yet even given the frequency with which we come across these there are still a few that make me take notice more than might be the case with most 930s. I’ve come to realize that an example in the color palette we see here will almost always be one that grabs me. Here we have a paint-to-sample Rosewood Metallic 1981 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in California, with 71,575 miles on it. Rosewood Metallic was available for the 1981 MY 911 so we may need some confirmation that it is indeed the paint-to-sample color that is indicated by the CoA, but even if Rosewood is not the correct color, this remains a visually striking Porsche in an excellent period-correct configuration.

This has inadvertently become “Red 911 Week” for me here at GCFSB. While I do enjoy a bright Red 911 my interest lies in a few other areas with the car we see here. Most notably this 993TT provides a nice market contrast to the 996TT featured on Tuesday. It is simply amazing to compare the relative value of these two Turbos and there are very good reasons for the differences that probably are not necessary to regurgitate here. We know what’s driving 993 values. I am also interested in the value of this particular 993TT as the bidding has brought the price up fairly high and it isn’t too often that we see these low-mileage examples come up for an auction; typically they are listed with a sky-high asking price, making it difficult for us to get an accurate gauge on real world values. So this one will be one to keep an eye on: a Guards Red 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Florida, with Beige interior and 23,805 miles on it.

4 CommentsIt’s time to take a moment to visit one of the enduring performance values in not only the Porsche market, but in the second-hand market in general. Just about any 911 Turbo is a hallowed performance machine that can compete with a wide variety of high-dollar supercars, yet still provide a refined driving environment for the owner seeking a relaxed cruise. That refinement wasn’t always the case with the Turbo, but Porsche’s goal has always been to showcase both sides of its engineering acumen with these cars and ever since the 993TT it has excelled in that department. Of all of the extant models the 996TT remains the least loved. The first to have a water-cooled engine combined with a somewhat wonky appearance will do that, but the performance has never really been the issue. So while the model itself loses out on the market, buyers win. Here we have a Guards Red 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Texas, with a pretty reasonable 35,924 miles on it and a 6-speed manual transmission.

4 CommentsWe have talked quite a bit about the menacing appearance of the Porsche 930. It is an appearance that fits naturally with the dynamics of the car itself, which long has had a reputation for punishing drivers who fail to show these machines the proper respect. That level of menace is turned up in a triple-black version of the car and here, with black RUF wheels, even the heightened levels of aggression from triple black have been increased. The seller clearly is attempting to show off the reflective qualities of the paint’s condition, but it would have been really nice to have at least one picture that simply lets us take in the full depths of that black exterior. If Darth Vader had a car, then this 1987 Porsche 930 Coupe would be it.

4 CommentsWhat a difference a year can make! In 1989, for the 930’s final year, Porsche equipped its iconic model with a 5-speed manual transmission for the first time. Enthusiasts had long wondered why Porsche had been so persistent in continuing to use a 4-speed manual, but they needed wonder no longer. Now 25 years down the road Porsche’s decision has rendered that single year of the 930 as an extremely valuable commodity, easily surpassing the values of the model years that immediately preceded it. As a quick case-in-point: the starting bid for this auction is pegged right around the point at which we might expect to see an ’86-’88 930 sell. The BIN price is quite a bit higher. The example we see here is a Marine Blue 1989 Porsche 930 Cabriolet, located in South Carolina, with a Linen leather interior and 50,200 miles on it. For someone looking for that combination of classic 911 style, open-top motoring, and pulse-quickening performance a 930 Cabriolet is sure to provide an ample amount of excitement and driving joy.
