2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S

When Porsche launched the next-generation 992 Turbo S last year, most had a hard time believing the numbers it was pulling down. I know we really don’t live our daily lives in 0-60 times, but when that number is quicker than a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, you think about things a little differently. The car is that fast. It is still the same basic shape as the 911 Turbo has been for the past 20 years, still uses a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six, but now can do a quarter-mile run in 10.1 seconds. Remember when 10 second quarter mile times were reserved for dedicated drag racers? All this for a starting price of $208,000. It should be illegal to sell a car this fast for that amount of money.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you can actually buy one at that price. Today’s car, a 2021 Turbo S coupe is finished in a wonderful paint-to-sample color of Club Blue, only carried out around $30,000 in options. I say only, because it is very easy to click way over $50,000 in options on the configurator at 1 a.m. in your underwear before bed. However, actually paying sticker price isn’t going to happen just yet.

2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

Hard to believe we are coming up on 10 years since the launch of the 991 Porsche 911 chassis. Even though they are officially 2013 model years, production of them began in mid-2012 and they were called “The new 911 Carrera” because there were some leftover 997.2 Turbos that were still produced as 2013 model years. There were no GTS or GT2/GT3 cars for this model year, so if you wanted the best, you had to go with the Carrera S model. Naturally, some who really wanted the new 911 and all the toys that went with them really went all out, and this is an example of one of those cars.

This 2013 C2S up for sale in Syracuse, New York was loaded up with a paint-to-sample exterior, carbon-ceramic brakes, the sport suspension and exhaust system, adaptive sport seats, Burmester audio, and a whole other laundry list of options. How much? Base price on one of these when new was around $120,000, but this one came in just north of $160,000. I wonder if they traded it in on a GT3 the next year?

2016 Porsche 911 R

Back in 2016 when the Porsche 911 R broke cover, GT boss Andreas Preuninger said of it, “It’s a car just for a fun day.” Typical German understatement, the same way they claimed they ” … still looks with pride at the honorable record of the Hindenburg and her crew” after their dirigible had an uncharacteristically rough landing. To me, the 911 R is up there with the GT3 RS 4.0 in terms of the best 911s made in the past 20 years and would without a doubt look to own one if I could afford one. That seems unlikely given what they are currently selling for, though…

2005 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

The 997 Porsche 911 generation continues to age gracefully in my eyes. It certainly won’t get mistaken for a new car, but I certainly think it a soothing and classic shape that will go down as a “win” for the design team at Porsche. As with almost cars, the facelift model years always get the first look, but I really like the pre-facelift examples just as much as the later cars. Today’s example, a base 2005 C2, is finished in the classic Guards Red over black leather and has just 39,000 miles. The price? Well … at least it is in the ballpark.

2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

In terms of the king of the hill in the Porsche 911 GT world, there are two. One is the 2011 GT2 RS, and the other is today’s car, the 2011 GT3 RS 4.0. Both of them were extremely limited in production, and most importantly, had a manual gearbox. Because of that, they sell for crazy money. Really crazy money. They have the perfect formula to be a really great collector car, and if you have a half a million bucks to spend, it all comes down to whether you want turbochargers or no. I don’t think either can be called better than the other, but for me, I might lean towards this GT3 RS 4.0.

Outside of a handful of paint-to-sample examples, the 600 cars were either offered in black or Carrara White. Today, we have one in British Racing Green. Naturally, I freaked out and thought this might be the best 4.0 ever spec’d out, but was disappointed to see it is wearing a vinyl wrap and not paint. Still, if you have $400,000, I would suggest this purchase.
