Opportunities for finding a pre-1974 911 for any sort of reasonable amount of money are few and far between and typically requires that we stretch our definition of reasonable to a certain degree. But, when considering 40+ year-old performance icons these sorts of facts shouldn’t surprise us. The model that does still fall well short of a six-figure price tag is the 911T, Porsche’s entry-level 911 produced from 1968-1973. This no frills version of the 911 featured a 2.0 liter flat-six that produced 110 hp when first introduced and served as the gateway to 911 ownership. By the 1973 model year, displacement had increased to 2.4 liters with an appreciable bump in hp as well (140 hp). The T remained throughout its life the most basic model available and, in a sense, was the last time a truly entry-level 911 was produced. For any buyer hoping to own a long-hood 911 for the lowest cost there are two primary options (excluding the option of buying a car in serious need of restoration). The first is to forgo the plan of getting a 911 at all and find an excellent 912 instead. Same basic design and layout, but with a flat-4 rather than a flat-6. The other option is to spend a bit more money and find a well maintained 911T. The 911T effectively became Porsche’s entry-level model once 912 production was ceased and both models offered similar levels of performance and refinement, especially when viewed through the lens of a modern automobile. For the 1970 and 1971 model years the 911 featured a 2.2 liter flat-6 engine delivering power to the rear wheels via a standard 4-speed or optional 5-speed manual transmission. The example featured here in a very period-correct Olive Green is a 1971 Porsche 911 T, located in Miami, with the more desirable 5-speed manual transmission.

Porsche is well known for its long and storied road-racing history. That history defines the marque and in many ways serves as its guide. But there is a portion of their racing history that also includes forays into rally racing, most notably their entry in the Paris-Dakar Rally with the 953. While certainly a small part of their overall racing heritage, rallying provided another means for Porsche to display its racing prowess during the manufacturer’s early days, even if road racing ultimately would remain its primary venue. The car we have featured here found inspiration in some of those early rally cars: a 1970 Porsche 911T Coupe with a few exterior modifications to give it a distinctive, rally-esque, look.

Rob is our resident Porsche nut here at GCFSB, but I had to save one 911 for myself this week. Growing up, my father had a picture of a green 911 set in a very pastoral setting hung on his office wall. I’d always admire that picture when I’d visit his work, his workspace peppered with various other petrolhead paraphernalia that made his colleagues offices look a bit bland. When I set eyes on this 1972 911T for sale in Minnesota, I instantly thought of that picture that hung in his office, which now happens to be his iPhone wallpaper. Some things never change, then. The 1972 911 is a curious year, as the oil tank was moved within the car’s wheelbase in an effort to improve handling. Thus, a 1972 911 can be easily distinguished by it’s oil filler door directly aft of the passenger door. This would last for one year, as it was reported many service stations were putting petrol in the oil tank.
