1974 Porsche 911 Coupe

It has been a week of very expensive Porsches from me so let’s move to the other end of the 911 spectrum to have a look at one of the unloved: a Bahama Blue 1974 Porsche 911 Coupe, located in Houston, with a blue/black interior and a stated 23,983 miles on it. If I’m honest, a 1974 911 is about as unloved as a 911 can get due to its marriage of a relatively poor performing and unreliable engine with the newly introduced impact bumpers. These are likely only to be outdone by an early 996, and the 996 would still have a substantial performance advantage in its favor. Clearly, these should not be looked at for their collectability, even if they remain some of the cheapest air-cooled 911s on the market. Rather they should be viewed as a potential chance to own an early 911 and the various pluses that go along with any vintage automobile, but without having to break the bank.

Winter Fresh: 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2

With so many models to choose from, I’m constantly going over what kind of Porsche 911 I would buy if the opportunity presented itself in the future. Sure the new ones are technical marvels and the classics are well, just that. But there has always been something about the 964 that has drawn me in. Specifically, the Carrera RS that wasn’t sold in the US market. Paint it Mint Green like we see on this 1991 Carrera 2 for sale at 4 Star Classics and well, it pretty much summarizes my perfect 911. However, do I need the edginess of a Carrera RS for what would admittedly be a weekend cruiser and not a track day beast? Probably not. But this Carrera 2 does a good job on the outside of mimicking the look of the RS with it’s Cup alloys. The rest of it is standard 964 fare, which is good enough for me.

1970 Porsche 911S Coupe

These days the demand for a hot 911 is nearly unmatched, especially for one of the air-cooled models. Whether it be a 911 Turbo or any of the variety of lightened and more powerful naturally aspirated variants these cars continue to command respect and adulation among Porsche enthusiasts. One of the first produced was the 911S. Introduced in 1967, the S combined more power, better braking and suspension, and a lower overall weight to produce one of best performing cars of its day, all the while still remaining comfortable and streetable enough for everyday use. The example featured here is a European delivery Blue Metallic 1970 Porsche 911S Coupe, restored by Aase Sales in Ohio, that shows 58,095 km (about 36,098 miles). For the 1970MY the entire 911 line had received a bump in engine displacement from 2.0 liters to 2.2 liters with the 911E and S now featuring Bosch multi-point injection.

1987 Porsche 930 – REVISIT

The very beautiful low-mileage Cassis Red 1987 Porsche 930 we featured back in August is back up for another sale. They have lopped $10K off of the asking price, now at $99,888.00, and while that still isn’t very cheap it’s starting to look like a much more attractive value for what is surely a pretty rare color on the 930. Will it finally sell?

1989 Porsche 930 Targa

In my write-up of the previous Turbo Targa we featured I mentioned that the only way to further the collector desirability of that car was if it were a 1989MY 930. Lo and behold, we have just such a machine here. To be fair, the previous Turbo Targa was very low mileage, while this one is nearing six-figures, so a market comparison cannot be made directly between the two, but as the only year the 930 came equipped with a 5-speed transmission the ’89 models have garnered a significant premium over earlier years. Stylistically the Turbo Targa is a reflection of the ’80s with wild lines and prodigious power. They are rarely the prettiest 911s as the tea-tray spoiler juts away from the Targa’s expansive rear greenhouse, but they still possess the ferocity of the 930 Coupe while providing a measure of open-top freedom. The example we see here is a Guards Red over Black 1989 Porsche 930 Targa, located in Texas, with 92,352 miles on it.
