Feature Listing: 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet

There is no doubt that modern day Porsches are impressive machines, with power and performance almost second to none. But when I scan the current lineup, there’s something missing. I’d never deny these are great machines, but I almost feel like there’s a bit of a carefree nature that was apparent in Porsches from the past. Case in point, this 1997 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet for sale from our friends at Automobili Limited right outside of Philadelphia. The owner of the dealership, Tony Kasser, was kind enough to invite me for a visit this summer and it was an impressive collection of enthusiast machines, mostly of German origin. This 911 Cabriolet is another in a long line of classic Porsches in their collection. In Guards Red over Cashmere leather with a 6-speed manual gearbox, this is a great way to enjoy one of the last of the air-cooled 911s.

Sprint-off: 2011 Audi S5 v. 2008 Audi RS4 Cabriolet

Blue is my favorite color. I know, this doesn’t really come as a surprise; I think I wax and wane all the time about the special blues that are available from different manufacturers. Whether it was my own Coupe GT’s original Oceanic Blue Metallic or my Passat’s Ink Blue Pearl Effect, there’s just something that’s very special about the glowing, bright and vibrant blues. Audi made a bold change to their blue around 2005; with the mid-year refresh to the B6 chassis, the new B7 discontinued the very popular purple-blue hue of Nogaro. Now, that color had been around in various forms since the RS2, and was closely associated with fast Audis – so it was a big deal. The new color, Sprint Blue Pearl Effect (LZ5F), was pretty and shiny but somehow changed the character of the fast Audis. Maybe it was time for a change, or maybe it was the wrong move – personally, I think a new RS7 in Nogaro would be pretty stunning. But the new hue was also a hit and offered a rare splash of color in Audi’s otherwise conservative grey/silver/black lineup. Today I have two of the faster Audis offered in this shade; about the same mileage, both 6-speed manuals, and both with the 4.2 V8, would you take the S5 Coupe or RS4 Cabriolet?

1998 BMW M3 Convertible with Hardtop in Dakar Yellow

e36 m3 for sale dakar yellow

I still recall the first time I set eyes on an e36 M3 convertible in the flesh. We were headed to the movies on a summer evening just as it was starting to cool off. After we parked, there was a brand new one in Estoril Blue over Dove Gray. The top was down which gave us a nice chance to live vicariously from the outside looking in — dreaming of cruising home in the open air while sinking into a new leather interior and driving just a little faster than everyone else as the light went down.

It would take years before I got an e36 M3 of my own, but that connection early on certainly played a part in my eventual ownership. Mine was a coupe but a friend of mine who was a broker at the time had a 98 convertible for sale that I got to compare side by side. While the lack of a top is an obvious difference, the lack of B-pillars was also a strong visual character trait of the convertible. Unfortunately this translates into a lot more shaking in the cabin, especially at the windshield. Then again, you don’t purchase a convertible over the coupe because it makes more sense on the track. You get the ‘vert because it’s a fantastic excuse to go for spirited Sunday cruise when the weather is nice.

1993 BMW 316i Baur TC4

Karosserie Baur has a history of making drop top versions of our favorite BMW models. This Stuttgart firm went into insolvency in 1998, but before this occurred, they had one last shot at making a memorable BMW cabriolet. This 316i TC4 you see here was the result. Four-door cabriolets are almost extinct in the modern world and this one was a different take on the theme, given it had four fully framed doors and a targa-esque roof setup that folded all towards the rear decklid. This Baur TC4 for sale in central Portugal won’t set the world on fire with it’s 1.6 liter four cylinder engine, but you and your four closest friends can have some fun this summer with four-door, drop top motoring.

1993 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet

The Porsche 964 went relatively unnoticed for quite some years. The rush on air-cooled Porsches changed that, with the immense popularity of its successor and predecessor, the 993 and 3.2 Carrera, respectively, increasing values on this 911 steadily. This Carrera 4 Cabriolet for sale outside of Philadelphia is one of around 4,800 C4s produced out of a production run of just over 17,300 964 Cabriolets. This particular car has just over 60,000 miles and also comes with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
