Tuner Tuesday Super Trio: Three Generations of Supercharged 911s

Oh, how I do love the comparos! Today I’ve worked up a third tuner comparison, because frankly this interesting trio was just a bit too good to pass up – as were the other BMWs! But unlike the factory sourced Dinan and Alpina modded cars from earlier, this comparison focuses on some unusual Porsches. Supercharging isn’t the typical choice for the flat-6, but the bolt-on horsepower results are undeniable, bringing the normal flat-6 quickly up to Turbo levels of power. I have three generations compiled here, all popular in their own right but for different reasons. Which is the winner?

1995 Porsche 911 Rauh-Welt Begriff #1

The sudden impact and influence of Nakai-san’s hand-crafted Porsche creations is both impressive and perhaps unprecedented. In part, that’s thanks to the proliferation of new media sources; go back to the 1980s, and no matter how cool his cars were it would have been much more difficult for him to become a name that most enthusiasts seem to know these days. We also live in a world which both is losing hand-crafted expertise but also celebrates it as the incredible skill it is. The cars he creates are racing inspired – a whole culture that exists in Japan but is undoubtedly taken to a much higher level by RWB. Stretched and slammed, the RWB cars are each unique but share heritage that resembles the racing 911 Turbo and GT2 models. They’re beyond replicas of race cars, though, defining their own unique identity. Not everyone likes the look, but nearly all can appreciate the attention to detail and incredible craftsmanship that goes into these cars:

Winter Fresh: 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2

With so many models to choose from, I’m constantly going over what kind of Porsche 911 I would buy if the opportunity presented itself in the future. Sure the new ones are technical marvels and the classics are well, just that. But there has always been something about the 964 that has drawn me in. Specifically, the Carrera RS that wasn’t sold in the US market. Paint it Mint Green like we see on this 1991 Carrera 2 for sale at 4 Star Classics and well, it pretty much summarizes my perfect 911. However, do I need the edginess of a Carrera RS for what would admittedly be a weekend cruiser and not a track day beast? Probably not. But this Carrera 2 does a good job on the outside of mimicking the look of the RS with it’s Cup alloys. The rest of it is standard 964 fare, which is good enough for me.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Scrolling through ads the other day my eyes began to glaze over. Car after car in either silver or white, with the occasional specimen in black to change things up. Even as a huge fan of black cars I can admit that they easily can fail to stand out when interspersed within a constant flow of silver and white machines. Suddenly: Speed Yellow. My attention was grabbed and with my eyes opened once again I knew I could continue and make it through the day. That’s what cars like this, which are otherwise completely standard, can do for me. They are a beacon of light within a sea of boredom. Now, sure, we feature plenty of silver and white cars, some of which really are fantastic, but there are plenty of times when I’m reminded of just how many of those cars exist and at those times they always fail to catch my eye. But this one did: a Speed Yellow 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Oregon, with 39,901 miles on it.

1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe

For reasons I’m not sure I understand myself, I was slow to accept the 964 and failed to give it its due worth and appreciation. That at least holds true for the Carrera as I’ve always found the 964 Turbo to be fantastic. It really wasn’t until recent years after seeing a few of them on the road that my appreciation for them has gained, presumably since I enjoy the design much more than any of the current models. And like with many cars, though not all, I find them much more attractive in the flesh rather than in pictures. Anyway, here we have a higher mileage example: a Grand Prix White 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe, located in Delaware, with 145,000 miles on it. I see a Grand Prix White 964 in my neighborhood fairly frequently and it looks fantastic! So while I typically do not care for these cars in white, I must defer to those experiences rather than what here looks somewhat bland.
