1994 Mercedes-Benz E420 with 39k miles

Sometimes you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. So goes the story for me and my love of Mercedes-Benzes from the 1980s and 1990s in comparison to the current model range. Mercedes still makes wonderfully good cars, but a bit of the mystique is gone, as an ever expanding SUV lineup emerges and the company tries to lure in those obsessed by the badge with the new CLA sedan. By 1994, the W124 E class was appearing a bit dated in comparison to the Japanese luxury upstarts Lexus, Acura and Infiniti. However, if I look at any of those models from the Far East in comparison to this E420 for sale in Connecticut, I’d say the E420 has stood the test of time. It might have not been the most exciting thing to look at when it was new, but the hallmark Mercedes build quality along with V8 muscle are ever apparent.

1991 Mercedes-Benz E500 Estate

The 1979 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Convertible we featured yesterday afternoon got me thinking about what other models I wish the company would have contemplated. High up on my list is this tribute that we see here, a 1991 E500 Estate. Technically, we should call it a 500E Estate as the nomenclature change didn’t take hold until the 1994 model year. Regardless of the name, this beefy, modified W124 T-model for sale south of Hamburg has stealth written all over it.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 with 70k Miles

The W124 had a bit of a battle on its hands at the end of the production cycle, as the onslaught of upscale vehicles from Japan began to eat into its hold in the mid-sized luxury car market. Still, the E class soldiered on until 1995, when a fresh new look with quad headlamps appeared. In hindsight, it’s quite apparent how great the W124 was, even late in life. I prefer the facelift that graced this car the last two years, and this low mileage 1994 E320 for sale in Minnesota is a very tempting proposition indeed.

1997 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel

I feel as if time hasn’t been all that kind to the W210 Mercedes-Benz E class. We’re almost 20 years out since this car appeared on the scene and with it, a new styling language to take Mercedes-Benz into the 21st century. Under that fresh face was a good old standby in the form of the diesel engine. While most manufacturers had abandoned oil burners in the 1990s, Mercedes stayed on a few years longer in the US and offered the new W210 E class with the 3.0 liter inline-6 diesel that produced 174 horsepower and 244 lb ft of torque. There weren’t a whole lot of takers for this car in comparison to the petrol powered E320, but those who gave it a shot would be won over by the renowned Mercedes diesel durability. This E300 for sale in California has a remarkably low 70,000 miles on the clock, unusual for a diesel Mercedes.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

While the 300CE we featured the other day exemplifies the kinder, gentler side of the W124 equation, the 500E/E500 was anything but. If you looked at the performance figures of this super sedan, you would think this might be a car for lunatics in a hurry. But it was so much more than a tool for speed freaks. Few cars before had so seamlessly blended brute performance with refined luxury, save for some Maseratis and Mercedes own creations such as the 300SEL 6.3 and 450SEL 6.9. The 500E kicked up the luxury sports sedan game a bit more. In collaboration with Porsche, the W124 was thoroughly worked over from engine to brakes to suspension to create the ultimate sleeper. This 500E for sale in New York does its best to blend into the woodwork with its Smoke Silver paintwork.
