1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Cabriolet

It seemed to be it was easier to keep up with vehicle changes year on year, mainly because there were less models populating manufacturer portfolios. As much as a petrolhead as I am, I can’t keep up with all the new model variants cropping up. Many seem to be a mashup of existing models meant to exploit every little automotive niche that might exist. But in reality, they are just variations on a particular modular platform. I still look back longingly to the days when the Mercedes-Benz lineup consisted of mainly the C, E, S and SL classes. It was simpler times and cars like this final year W124 E320 Cabriolet contained much of the DNA that made these cars popular with the monied set. This example for sale in Denver is a one owner car, showing under 50,000 miles on the clock.

For as long as I can remember, the sign that one “made” it was a Mercedes-Benz, and specifically a convertible one. Sure, if you wanted to go fast you bought a Porsche, and if you wanted to go in the snow you bought an Audi – or if you wanted to do what everyone else on Wall Street did, you bought a BMW. But there was a royal air about Mercedes-Benz models that the others couldn’t really capture. Perhaps it was the long and storied history of one of the most significant automobile manufacturers in the world – a car company that had been selling the best cars in the world to the stars since the 1930s. Perhaps it was the incredible build quality of many of their models; cars not designed to a price point, but to an engineering standard unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Or perhaps it was just simply that the cars Mercedes-Benz managed to make you feel incredibly special, incredibly pampered and yet not be ostentatious or overstated. In truth, it’s probably a little bit of each, and few cars embody this combination of qualities quite as well as the W124 Mercedes-Benz did. You could have economic diesels, versatile estates, sporty V8 monsters, or enjoy the limitless sky the cabriolet version offered you:

1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 with 70k Miles

The W124 had a bit of a battle on its hands at the end of the production cycle, as the onslaught of upscale vehicles from Japan began to eat into its hold in the mid-sized luxury car market. Still, the E class soldiered on until 1995, when a fresh new look with quad headlamps appeared. In hindsight, it’s quite apparent how great the W124 was, even late in life. I prefer the facelift that graced this car the last two years, and this low mileage 1994 E320 for sale in Minnesota is a very tempting proposition indeed.

If you summer in The Hamptons, frequent Cape Cod or wander around an Ivy League campus, you’ll notice a curious thing if you are a car enthusiast. The monied folk often eschew the ubiquitous luxury SUV for the kind of car we see here, the luxury estate car. Many of them are available with all-wheel drive, like this 1998 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate for sale in Texas. If an SUV is a bit too over the top for you, but you still need the cargo capacity and all-wheel drive versatility, this low mileage W210 E class is a good compromise.
