1977 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Euro-Spec 4-Speed Manual

I’ve said before that the W116 is a love/hate car for me; most times, I see them and they just look like any tired old Benz; a bit out of proportion and over-bumpered. But then I see a great example, like some of the Euro-spec 6.9 models I’ve written up in the last few weeks, and I get a bit giddy. Though not really my dream car by any means, I can imagine cruising up to a Cars and Coffee event, or a German Car Day somewhere in my massive Benz. That vision is helped when I see one in full European trim; the slim bumper lines and cleaned up light clusters make it so much better. But while most of my adoration is levied upon those 6.9 models, this car might just change that. Compared the largest engine fitted in the W116 6.9, this car seems downright puny with only a 2.8 liter inline-6. What helps that, though, is the manual transmission and some of the missing luxuries that help lighten the load. Top it off with some AMG bits, and my does this car look tasty!

Wednesday Wheels Roundup

It’s a rainy day here in New England, so I spent some time finding my favorite wheels on Ebay. Most of these are period option or aftermarket wheels, but all of them are pretty cool. I especially love the BMW Ronal wheels, the ATS AMG wheels in nearly new shape and the amazing BBS magnesium Bugatti EB110 wheels. Which are your favorite?

Update: thanks to reader KevinR for correctly spotting the Mercedes-Benz wheels were Centra Type 31s. Thanks!

Tuner Tuesday: 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC AMG

About a month ago I wrote up a AMG-modified grey market 500SEC that scared people with it’s chromed Pentas, blacked out windows and questionable history. But perhaps if you can get by the again all-caps ad copy, this cranberry-colored grey market 1983 will be the one for you. Sporting the requisite AMG bits and period correct color-matched wheels, this 500SEC certainly looks the part – and the Moby Dick sized stack of receipts may mean this is the not-so-white whale you’ve been looking for:

Tuner Tuesday: 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC AMG

Back in October, I wrote up a Euro-market Mercedes-Benz 380SEC AMG that was a bit of a poser, but in great condition available for a relatively low price. It looks like no one was really interested in that particular model, though, as it still remains available today. Perhaps that’s because it lacked many of the real-deal AMG components; well, to rectify that I enter into evidence Exhibit B. Today’s near twin of that car appears to be the real deal, complete with AMG suspension, ATS “Penta” wheels, the full body kit and some nifty drive line components. With only a few hours left to act, will this period-correct Bahnstormer be the car that you desire? Take a look at all of that white:

It certainly is a lot to take in, but it looks the part for sure. I’m a bit confused by the advertisement; no documentation about the AMG parts – or, importantly, whether this was an AMG-built car or a car assembled from AMG parts, is provided. I would guess that, in part, is why the bidding is so low currently, sitting below $10,000. For that amount, you get the great SEC look in a bit overdone but correct “dipped” white, some fantastic looking wheels and Euro goodies, and a host of AMG upgrades. The package is about as perfectly 80s as you can get, minus Crockett and Tubbs. The white over blue is a nice combination, though I’d probably change the wheel color to either silver or matching white to complete it. I also liked on the 380 how the AMG badge was black – even if it wasn’t correct. These cars aren’t for everyone, but show up to a meet in this and you’re sure to draw an appreciating crowd. What a neat car!

Tuner Tuesday: 1982 Mercedes-Benz 380SEC AMG

509

Today I found another not real AMG, this time a 380SEC, and you know what? I’m just not sure that I care that it’s not a “real” AMG because – well, just look at it. In all of it’s white glory, this Pearlesant AMG replica with Pentas and brown leather just looks so perfect, I can easily forget that it doesn’t have any monster motor in it. That memory lapse would undoubtedly be assisted by the quite low price this big coupe is being offered at. Take a look for yourself:

Lower miles, great condition, period correct modifications; this car strikes me as all win. So what if it doesn’t have the big motor? That just saves you from some even bigger bills down the road repairing it. This strikes me as one of the best deals we’ve featured on Tuner Tuesday to date; for less than $7,000 you too can feel like a Saudi Prince. In my mind, this car is just about perfect if you like the SECs – it’s got the right wheels, right stance, right interior, and that body kit doesn’t take too much away from the overall look. Would I change anything? The white grill is a bit much, but I’m just not sure I’d change it because I think it fits the overall package. The hood pin striping is a bit horrible though.
