Recently, co-author Nate here at German Cars For Sale Blog refreshed his 1988 M5 and has been raving about it. These super-sedans have been generally following the 1980s BMW trend upwards in value over the past few years, though in my M5 Roundup a few weeks ago I pointed out that didn’t necessarily mean you should buy the first example that you can afford. Today there is another E28 M5 up for consideration; looking splendid in Euro-bumper and headlight trim, it’s certainly looking the part – but will it be the one to buy?

Has it really been 4 months since we looked at a 1988 BMW M5? Fellow author Nate has just refreshed his M5 and been raving about it once again. It’s easy to understand why; with a 1988 M5 in my family also, I’ve had the pleasure of driving the legend that has become the M5 many times and it’s enjoyable in every single instance. These M cars have also been one of the best values in classic BMW ownership for a while, though that’s been changing over the past year or two. But like the Audi C4 S4/S6, owners of these classic but traditionally more affordable have enjoyed driving them and most have higher miles by this point in life. Despite that, aided by reports by classic magazine and online sensations like Chris Harris, the star that was the M5 has gotten even higher in the sky and they’re all on their way up in value. Time to jump in, then? There are three E28 M5s on Ebay right now, and you can have any color you’d like, as long as it’s black:

A supreme autobahn blitzer capable of hanging with sports cars on back roads, the M6 has a pretty unique skill set hidden beneath that flowing exterior. Right now, there are five great condition Ms up on Ebay, so I thought it was time to do a roundup of what was available and take a look at the options. The first is probably the best one money can buy, and not a stranger to these pages. We saw this ultra-low mile museum piece as part of the 1980s BMW M “Holy Trinity” post I did last fall, and while the location and seller has changed, the condition hasn’t:

3 CommentsAs my E28 sits in the shop for some serious work, I’ve been reexamining the haste with which I jumped into an almost 200k-mile 80s BMW. Would I have been wiser to heed the common cries (often my own!) of “buy low mileage, save the headaches!” I’m young and dumb, but more than that, I was excited about having a rebuild already taken care of and having a car I could drive without reservation. If I were a little older and a little wiser (and had a bigger bank account), I’d probably go for lower mileage, but 80s BMWs will most likely be seriously expensive at that point. So jump in while you can folks, and snag the good ones. This 104k-mile M6 appears to be one of the good ones.
