Just in under the wire, we might have one of my most favorite cars of the year. It isn’t the rarest or even the most exciting car to drive, but it is one I would be totally happy driving 365 days a year in 2022. This is a 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC Coupe finished in Emerald Green Metallic over a Designo brown leather interior. I like to describe it as a torpedo of luxury. This is a car that hangs in the class of Bentley Continental GT and Rolls-Royce Wraith for a fraction of the price, while looking like it totally belongs. It is hard to to believe this car is already seven years old, but that just means it isn’t $150,000 anymore. Even better, it’s got just 6,300 miles.

Last week I took a look at a 2012 Mercedes-Benz S550 and the reaction was well, mixed. I totally agree that it is a nine year-old S-Class and maybe the asking price was a little high at $30,000. It probably has another $5,000 to $10,000 to go in deprecation before the bottom, so it wasn’t like you’ll be even money on it when it comes times to sell. Just for curiosity’s sake, I wanted to see what other S-Class you could snag for $30,000. Hello W222.

2 CommentsAs I get older, the less and less I want to deal with cars that aren’t comfortable. I adore my 1983 240D with nearly 300,000 miles on it, but when its 22 degrees out and I’m de-icing locks, barely getting any heat out of the vents, and woefully accelerating, I’m not all that happy. Every time I’m in this situation, I yearn for a car I get in, turn on, and drive away in total comfort. Not necessarily a soulless appliance, but a car that satisfies my inner needs for a machine that is “special.” What car could do that job exceptionally well? The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, of course. But not just any S-Class. An S-Class with a designo interior just to be extra “special.”

8 CommentsAs fun and quirky as my two daily drivers, a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD and 1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D, are to have, they are borderline miserable to drive in the northeast during the winter months. Since I don’t own a four car garage, they sit in the driveway 99% of the time while my W210 E55 AMG sits under a cover in my garage with empty boxes piled on top of it. As a result, it is always a surprise to see if the locks or door handles are frozen when I walk outside in the morning. From there, the 240D is pretty good about starting in any temperature but the 300SD isn’t having it unless the coolant heater has been plugged in for a while despite me just replacing the glow plugs a few months ago. Once I do get one of them fired up, really hot heat is a pipe dream in the 240D while it’s a crap shoot in the W116 because of the god forsaken Chrysler servo system. Compare all this to a normal car that you simply press a button on a key fob, put it in gear and drive away in total comfort. This all has me dreaming about a more modern daily driver and when you comes to dreams, you know what they say, dream big.
This 2010 S550 4Matic up for sale in Brooklyn might be one of the nicest W221s outside of any S600 or AMG variety. Painted in Designo Magno Platinum Matte Finish on the outside, the inside is even better with Designo Sand Leather seats with Oak Grain Designo Natural Matte wood sprinkled about. Add in some other neat options like the rear seat entertainment package and you have a really loaded up S-Class. But even with the depreciation at around 25% of its original cost, is it worth it?

3 CommentsYou are probably wondering why I am featuring a relatively new Mercedes-Benz S-Class that is quite common and outside of being really packed with tech, isn’t all that interesting once you’ve been around it for some time. Well, this 2015 S550 4Matic up for sale in New Jersey combines my two favorite things when it comes to German cars: massive depreciation and high miles. Granted, this car doesn’t have particularly high miles at 111,739, but you do the math at the car being roughly three years-old, you can see that thing car has been on the road a lot. When it comes to the depreciation on this car, the numbers get even better.
