2015 Audi TTS

Want to feel very special, drive a great sports car and stand apart from the crowd but don’t have a million dollars for a Porsche 911?

No problem. I have the solution.

What about Audi’s TTS? Okay, it’s not the 400 horsepower TT RS – I get it. But it retains the walk-on-water MQB platform and pairs it with the Golf R drivetrain – good for 265 horsepower and 258 lb.ft of torque driving all four wheels. Paired with the S-Tronic DSG dual-clutch, you’ve got a car capable of blitzing 60 mph in 4.9 seconds yet still returns 27 mpg on the highway. Unlike the R8, it’s also got rear seats (albeit quite small) and a hatchback that doesn’t contain a V10. While that’s disappointing when showing off to your friends, the reality is that occasionally you need to carry something larger than your ego.

But though it lacks the headline-grabbing figures and cross-marque instantly recognizable alpha-numeric nomenclature of its more famous siblings, the TTS fails to disappoint with performance and incorporates all the cutting-edge technology, including the mega-cool virtual dashboard. You could also spec it out in a bunch of really cool colors, like Somoa Orange Metallic.

2015 Audi R8 4.2 quattro Coupe

After a few of not-so-nice or fake R8s, I thought I’d take a look at one you might actually consider buying. Now, jumping into the R8 world is not particularly cheap, but relative to the 911 markets these are still fairly affordable for what is otherwise a borderline supercar. Take today’s 7-year-old example. It’s got stunning looks highlighted by the Somoa Orange Metallic paint – but it rings in under $100k. And though it looks a lot like the GT model I looked at in 2021, it’s also $40k cheaper but still has some neat options. So let’s take a peek:

2012 Audi R8 GT quattro Coupe

I’ve covered quite a few of the special Audi R8s brought to our market, but most have been color-based and focused on the second generation. But before it bowed out, Audi offered a hotted-up performance version of the 5.2 model:

It was called the GT, and Audi only built 333 of them – a scant 90 of which were directed to the US market. Performance was increased thanks to 35 more horsepower for a total of 560, and weight was down over 200 lbs thanks to lightweight glass, panels, and seats. Audi ditched the magnetic ride damping system as well, opting instead for adjustable coilovers. Add in some aero and carbon-fiber bits, and this limited ride was pretty impressive – and expensive, with a sticker price of over $200,000. One is up for sale, and worth a look – and yeah, it’s a pretty cool color, too!
