Fewer cars summed up the optimism and robust market of the mid to late 1990s than then Mercedes-Benz W140 S class. While it was released on the tail end of an economic downturn and derided for its decadence, this was an impressive car, not only because of its size. Mercedes packed a ton of features and the latest technology into this new S class that, as usual, had the competition scrambling to keep up. A two door SEC model was on offer, both in 5.0 liter V8 and 6.0 liter V12 format. This 1993 500SEC has traveled only 42,000 miles and offers someone the crack at executive comforts at a subcompact price.

The low mileage 450SEL we featured last month is back up for sale. The car failed to meet its reserve last time at $18,800 after an impressive 50 bids.

THE BELOW POST ORIGINALLY APPEARED ON OUR SITE November 14, 2013:
With a new Mercedes-Benz S class upon us, it’s an opportune time to look back through the years and see how this luxury sedan development. The W116 S class quickly became an afterthought after the much loved W126 debuted at the dawn of the 1980s. This big bruiser’s moment came via a movie most of us all know and love, Ronin. The top of the range 6.9 made an appearance in this action packed flick, terrorizing a Citroën XM and duo of Peugeot 605s in the pursuit of a mysterious case. Even with a rocket launcher perched through the sunroof opening, the 6.9 still looked dignified going about its business. This 450SEL captures much of the 6.9’s aura even if the V8 is down on power. But for most, the power, safety and luxury this classic S class offers is quite adequate.

Comments closedPerhaps its nostalgia or living out a dream never fulfilled, but as time marches on, I want to find a way to get into a mint condition W126 S class. An icon of the 1980s, this is a car that is still revered for its balance of classic and modern styling with durability and luxury buyers had come to expect from Mercedes-Benz up to that point. This Midnight Blue 300SEL for sale in New Jersey has to be one of the lowest mileage examples of any W126 I’ve seen in the past few years of writing for GCFSB.

6 CommentsI’m a sucker for oddball cars. Be it a rare color, prototype or oddity that might have not lit up the sales charts, you’ve got me hooked. Today, we’ll take a look at something that few in the US knew was an option for 1994 over at Mercedes-Benz: a manual transmission W140 S class. Yes, a few of these exist out there, but not many. The 5-speed manual was relegated to the entry level six-cylinder models in the range, such as this S280. It’s fairly common knowledge that the entry level S class in the US, the S320, with its slightly larger six cylinder engine wasn’t one to light up the quarter mile. But with the row-your-own option in this S280 for sale in Italy, at least it allows you to make the most of what you’ve got.
