1969 Porsche 912 Targa

I have been looking for a 912 to feature for awhile now, but most of them have appeared worn out and tired. That’s never too surprising given that, as Porsche’s entry-level model, the 912 was a car that was bought and driven until it needed replacing. They were hardly garage queens or collectibles. So you can imagine my excitement when not only did I come across one that looked in rather nice condition, but it’s in a fantastic color AND a Targa! We rarely see a 912 Targa and while the market can be somewhat indifferent toward the Targa in general they’re always an interesting sight. Here we have a Lemon Yellow 1969 Porsche 912 Targa, located in California, with 134,600 miles on it. Like for the 911, in 1969 Porsche shifted the rear wheels by 57mm in order to extend the wheel base of the 912 and provide better balance to the rear-engined chassis. 1969 was to be the last year of 912 production as it was being replaced by the 911T, and while it would briefly reappear for the US market in 1975 as the 912 E for the most part it is these early models that capture our attention.

1983 Porsche 911SC Targa

This is not déjà vu. Last week we featured this Guards Red 911SC Targa mostly to highlight an available option for those looking for a good quality driver and/or their first opportunity to try out a 911 without breaking the bank. The car we see here, an India Red 1983 Porsche 911SC Targa with 85,667 miles on it, falls into a similar category. The 1983 911SC generally is a good bet for those looking for value as it’s the last year prior to the introduction of the 3.2 Carrera, which tends to command a slight premium, so you get the most 911SC for your buck. This one is also helped by having my personal favorite interior: Cork Leather.

1979 Porsche 911SC Targa

While many of the 911s we feature here at GCFSB fall into the category of excellent condition, low mileage, and original examples, which typically come with a fairly high price tag, we also strive to find interesting driver-quality examples as they come across the market. Cars reflecting a high degree of care from their owners, but which also may possess a mechanical issue here and there or issues with their originality. And while the museum-quality collectors are always neat to see, it is the drivers that really grab our attention. These are cars with personal histories that have spent significant time doing precisely what they were intended: being driven. For that alone we love them. The car featured here appears to fall into just such a category: a Guards Red 1979 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in North Carolina, with 102,250 miles on it.

1971 Porsche 911E Targa

On the current market, the 911E has long been a personal favorite of mine for its marriage of performance and luxury. With a more powerful engine and more sophisticated suspension than the entry-level 911T, the 911E was aimed at buyers who wanted more from their Porsche, but did not want the full high-performance 911S. We almost might suspect it of being a GT if it weren’t for the engine being placed at the rear of the car. Though that is essentially what the 911E was: an extremely capable performer that still delivered a high degree of comfort and luxury. While now they are more valuable than a 911T they do not manage to come close to seeing the sorts of values we expect from the 911S and for that I tend to like them quite a bit. The example we see here is a restored 1971 Porsche 911E Targa, located in Oregon. While the Silver over Black color scheme isn’t the most exciting in the 911 range it possesses a certain timeless quality that will always have its fans.

1974 Porsche 911 Targa

November was, unofficially, Targa month here at GCFSB and we featured just about every air-cooled variant of the Targa Porsche produced. Here is one of the earlier variants that we didn’t feature: a Gemini Blue Metallic 1974 Porsche 911 Targa, located in California, with a reported 41,400 miles on it. We did feature a European Targa from 1976 during the November Targa explosion, but the ’74 models garner a little more interest on the market and this one is Gemini Blue, one of my personal favorites within the Porsche paint spectrum. 1974 was a year of significant change for the 911 and while typically unloved they are ever-so-slowly beginning to gain some appreciation, whether as a simple function of time (and thus increased rarity) or perhaps as the first 911 to take on the new design. Still, with a couple exceptions, the mid-year 911s remain a long way off the value of their predecessors.
