Convertible Week: 1998 Mercedes-Benz SL500

To kick off Convertible Week here at GCFSB, we’ve started with one of our favorites: the Mercedes-Benz SL. For more than 60 years, this car has been a mainstay in the Mercedes lineup, beginning with the closed roof, 300SL Gullwing. The Gullwing would eventually give us the 300SL Roadster and from there, Mercedes stuck with the hardtop roadster format, which would morph into a roadster with a retractable hardtop for the 2003 model year. One of my favorite SLs, however, was the late model R129 that preceded the R230 with its folding hardtop. This low mileage 1998 example is almost exactly as I’d want mine kitted out, looking mean in black over black leather with the 18″ AMG alloy wheels.

Coupe Week: 1993 Porsche 968

$_4 (1)

We’ve saved the best for last for Coupe Week here at GCFSB. Porsche is a company with a colorful history. These days, though, not much emerges from Stuttgart that captures my imagination like the sports cars of my youth. Call me nostalgic, but I don’t aspire to own an SUV with an turbo badge on its rump, no matter how fast or capable it is. Then again, I am attracted to the odd special edition 911 and the new Cayman GT4 that recently dropped is rather tasty with its inclusion of a clutch pedal.

Always one to explore the hypotheticals, what if Porsche continued to develop some of the platforms of their past? The front engine, four cylinder experiment ended after an almost two decade run in 1995 with the 968 Coupe and Cabriolet. This was an extremely versatile platform, giving us everything from basic 924s to the beastly 944 Cup Cars of the late 1980s. This 968 Coupe for sale in Miami strikes a good balance between collector piece and high mileage runner and has the desirable 6-speed manual gearbox.

Coupe Week: 1998 BMW 328is

Occasionally I’ll come across a car that at first glance seems dingy and hardly worth my time writing about. Such was the case with this E36 BMW 328is, but upon closer inspection of the photos I thought it worth posting. The rear seats appear to be in fantastic condition, same goes for the front passenger seat. The drivers seat does appear to have a normal amount of wear for the vehicle’s age but no cracks, tears or other egregious blemishes are mentioned. The owner has added sport pedals and an M shift knob which are nice little touches.

If I have one gripe it’s that they didn’t put more time into properly photographing the vehicle. I know not everyone is a master of automotive photography but it’s pretty easy to copy what the professional listers on eBay do and apply it to your own post. Lack of photographs of a car from every angle will only make potential buyers concerned that something is being hidden, though in this particular case I think it’s just laziness.

Coupe Week: 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort

As we near the end of Coupe Week we’ll take a look at one of the ultimate coupes Porsche has produced. The 959 needs little introduction from me; upon its release it was one of the most jaw-dropping technological marvels buyers would have the opportunity of purchasing. The most obvious contrast to the 959, of course, would be the Ferrari F40. Two different answers from two different marques to the need for a halo car. Like most things Porsche, the 959 is both a showcase of performance, but also refinement and technology that pushed the envelope of how we would even conceive of a supercar. With twin-turbocharging and all-wheel drive the 959 also foreshadowed many of the technological innovations to come for the 911 and paved the way for much of the 911’s continued success. It goes without saying that these are extraordinarily rare to come across for sale so when one does it is always worth a look. Here we have a Silver 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort with Black leather interior and a mere 16,500 kilometers on the clock.

Coupe Week: 1993 BMW 850i

1

Though they’ve spent the last decade or so sitting unused in the back of the enthusiast dream garage, BMW’s E31 8-series has seen a resurgence in interest and appreciation recently. As the most range-topping coupe BMW’s produced, it took the shark-nose look into the techno era and stands out as an impressively clean design in the face of today’s luxury rhinoceri. This example spent its first 22 years with a single owner in California and has just crossed the 100k mark. It’s no show-stopping 850CSi, but that very fact helps it become one of the cheapest ways to get behind a V12 in the world. Well cared for and showing normal signs of age, it’s sweet example of BMW’s megacoupe that is quickly becoming collectible.
