1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera

We talk a bit about 911 reliability around here and it is a well known trademark of the engines in these cars. But how about a 930 with over 200,000 miles on it? Given the much higher stress these blown engines tend to undergo a car like this one is truly a testament to the capabilities of these fantastic performance machines. This particular 930 has another treat to go with it. With some regularity we come across older Porsches with dubious claims about being a “one-owner” car, but this one here appears to be the real deal! One owner and one place of service for its entire 38 year and 200K mile existence, surely a rare thing to come across. Even better, this 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera, located in California, recently has come out of restoration and sits looking absolutely fantastic!

Magnus Walker’s 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera

Here we have something special: a 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera owned and rebuilt by Magnus Walker, aka Urban Outlaw. Walker’s works run the gamut from original restorations to fully custom-modified cars and typically his builds center around early 911s from the ’60s and ’70s. This Turbo Carrera sits nearer the original end of his spectrum; a car he returned to glory rather than try to take it into another dimension. And perhaps that shouldn’t surprise us given how great the Turbo Carrera was from the beginning. The looks, the performance, and the spirit are all pure 911, but turned up by a few degrees. Upon first release the 911 Turbo used a 3.0 liter flat-six mated to a 4-speed transmission. These are most distinguished from turbos produced from 1978 and later by their use of the standard whale tail found on other 911 iterations rather than the tea-tray and intercooler of the 3.3 liter turbos. Powerful, challenging to drive, and beautifully proportioned. Porsche’s initial forays into turbocharging the 911 made its sporting pretensions crystal clear and they have hardly looked back.

1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera

In what has become my own mini theme-week, we have come across another rare color 911, though with this car that color rarity is enhanced by it being a Turbo Carrera rather than a standard Carrera. Here we have an Ice Green 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera with Tan interior and a very reasonable 60,632 miles, located in Florida. 1977 was the final year Porsche utilized a 3.0 liter turbocharged flat-six in the 930 and it is also one of the few years in which US cars were badged as a Turbo Carrera, rather than simply as a Turbo. Another minor difference is the whale tail, which was standard on 3.0 liter Turbos rather than what became the Tea Tray on the 3.3 liter Turbos with an air-to-air intercooler. So while these cars are down on power relative to the majority of 930s we come across they do possess their own uniqueness that separates them from the rest of the pack. The particular car here is further separated by the beautiful Ice Green exterior. It’s a fantastic metallic shade that contrasts well with the Black Fuchs wheels and one that we do not come across all that often.
