If there was ever a car that looked more at home on the forecourt of a country club, it was the W124 series Mercedes E-class estate. This was a car synonymous with the well-heeled housewives or those summer jaunts to New England beaches. While utilitarian, this is a rather stately machine. Take it to the local market and you would have no problem finding this 300TD amongst the myriad of vanilla, look-alike SUVs jamming the parking lot. This 300TD for sale in British Columbia is a Canadian market car, but given its age of over 25 years, is legal for US importation.

After setting eyes on this low mileage 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D for sale in New Jersey, I thought to myself “this car embodies everything I used to love about Mercedes.” If you asked me right now to sound off the current lineup, I’d struggle to name every model and trim variation, such is the expanse of the product portfolio and my general indifference towards SUVs from any manufacturer. The W123’s life came to a close when there was a fairly simple lineup, although one which expanded with the introduction of the W201 190 class. Few thought the W123, with its larger than life reputation, could be successfully superseded, but the W124 E-class did an admirable job of building an image all its own. Still, however, the W123 is revered amongst the Mercedes faithful with many original and restored examples roaming the streets today. If you’re looking for the best of the best, though, this example pretty much takes the cake.

4 CommentsMercedes gets all the attention for producing some unstoppable diesel sedans and making them available in the US for the better part of a decade. BMW only brought its oil-burning straight-six to the US for 2 years, but it got the benefit of coming in the sharp E28 5-series. Of the few 524tds I’ve seen on the road, most have been beat survivors, still chugging away in spite of less-than-attentive owners. This example, however, may be the best one out there, and certainly the cleanest I’ve seen. Silver on bottle caps looks as good as ever, and the blue cloth interior has held up better than just about any E28’s leather. This 524td has had the same owner since 1987 and looks ready to be classy, comfortable, and decently efficient transportation for another 30 years and 100k miles.

Comments closedYou wouldn’t know it from looking at the current product portfolio, but Volvo carried a bit of a staid image up to and around the turn of the millennium, with 90 degree angles and boxy styling ruling the day. The cars had their following though, with a reputation for safety and reliability unmatched by almost every other manufacturer in the world. Looking back on Volvo’s history, there were a few flash in the pan moments in terms of styling, such as the P1800ES, the 480 and these cars we see here, the 780 and Coupe. Essentially the same car, Volvo decided to produce an encore to the chopped top 262C, employing Bertone once again to have their hand at a two-door version of the 700 series. Just over 8,500 examples were produced from 1986 to 1991, with the final year seeing a name change to “Coupé.” We’ll start off this Double Take by looking at a 1987 780, with the venerable 2.8 liter V6 engine.
