For those with a good memory, you may remember my posts about last year’s work on refinishing a set of BBSs. Well, the time had finally come and a killer deal on Dunlops from The Tire Rack presented itself, and I pulled the trigger. Stories of leaky RSs and my father’s experience with his vintage Euro M6 TRX RSs led me to look for a sealant to add; although I hadn’t pulled apart the wheels, there’s no denying that they’re the best part of 30 years old at this point and the original seal could be suspect. I picked up some GE metallic-colored silicone from Amazon, and about 10 minutes of work applying, smoothing the bead in between the sandwich of the 3 piece wheels and 24 hours of drying later the RSs were ready for rubber for the first time in a decade.

1969 Porsche 911/912 Vintage Race Car

I’m not going to mince words here: I think this car is fantastic. Not in that high-dollar super-car performance sense of the word, but for the simplicity and execution of the build along with its overall look. What we have here is a 1969 911 body fitted with a race prepped 1.6 liter flat-4 from the 912 that has been mounted as far forward as the body would allow. The 912 was reputed to be a more capable handling machine relative to its more heralded 911 siblings in part because of the better chassis balance provided by the smaller and lighter 4-cylinder engines they utilized. Added to that capable handling is a sub-1800 lb weight propelled by an engine tuned to produce 130 hp. This car is sure to provide lively performance and immense driving fun. I’ll leave our readers to peruse the rest of the ad copy for a fuller sense of all the work done on this car. It appears very well executed.

The transmission is a 5 sp. open diff, custom gearing, All receipts for gearing, engine work and specs, vintage pictures from racing in California, Daytona Rennsport II, development Etc. This car has the full rear 911 engine mounts in place and a 6 cylinder install not a big project if you want to go that route. You would need to install a oil tank for the 6 cyl. With a car weight of 1740 pounds and with a 130 HP engine mount as far forward as this 912 set up, what a ride. Quick, responsive, and frankly,one very cool looking Porsche Race Car. Paint looks good, body fit nice, and with no question, would cost 125K or more to build and sort this kind of car. 4 folders full of records,reciepts and history. Sold with bill of sale only.

This is one of those rare times when I think the seller may have undervalued the market for his own car. Or perhaps he’s just very realistic and I’ve grown too accustom to seeing Porsches offered at above market value. Bidding right now is at $24,100 and while the reserve has not been met, with a Buy It Now of $28,750 I feel pretty confident that we’ll see a sale here. This is a fully sorted and documented race car that is ready to drive and whose build would come at three to four times the price being asked here. It goes without saying that any serious buyer should know exactly what he or she is getting into with this sort of car, but I can’t help but think that this is a bargain.

1936 BMW 328

BMW fans, here’s where it all started. You may think the 2002 started it all, but in reality, the 328 was Genesis. Truth be told, BMW was quite successful in the 1930s and before in the motorcycle scene, and indeed was a well regarded manufacturer of airplane engines. But in the changing climate of German politics in the 1930s, it was clear that the government wanted to steer the population away from its chosen method of transportation – motorcycles – and towards automobile ownership. To this end, BMW’s main competition at this time, Daimler-Benz and Auto-Union, were quick to enter into the premier form of Grand Prix racing in order to promote both the government’s agenda and their own technical superiority in automotive engineering. Thus would be born the legendary Silberpfeil – the Silver Arrows of Grand Prix racing. Behind the scenes, BMW pursued a slightly different course, and as the Italian and French automakers fled the all-conquering German Grand Prix cars in favor of sports car racing, BMW took them on with their newly designed 328 sports car. Few survive today, but every once in a while one comes up for sale, such as this silver example today:

Before we proceed to the details about this truly work of Art and Craftsmanship I felt to share a little history about the uniqueness of the 1936 BMW 328 Roadster. Enjoy reading it ………..

……………….”A small brochure circulated among a select group of people in late 1935 revealed the existence of a new 2-litre sports car to be known as the “Typ 328”. The description of the car was deliberately low-key and avoided giving any performance or speed figures. The brochure was intended purely as an appetiser for “friends of the company”; there was no announcement in the press.

Journalists were left open-mouthed when they set eyes on the car for the first time in the Nürburgring paddock on 13 June 1936. There, Ernst Henne was preparing to race the 328 in the International Eifel Race the following day. The motorcycle world record holder roared away from his rivals off the start line and soon left the rest of the field trailing in his wake with a phenomenal average speed of 101.5 km/h. This show of strength from the 328 had commentators purring about the future of the German sports car. However, few could have guessed that they were witnessing the dawn of a new era.

Of the 464 examples of the BMW 328 ever built, only around 200 have survived, some 120 of which are in Germany. Many still take part in historical races to this day. And cars from BMW Classic’s own collection can regularly be found in the thick of the action – often with illustrious figures at the wheel. Indeed, in 2003 Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustav teamed with Prince Leopold of Bavaria for the reborn Mille Miglia – now run as a regularity test – in a BMW 328 Touring Roadster.

To be reminded of just how potent the 1940 cars still are today, you need only witness their journey to Italy for the event. There is not a transporter or trailer in sight; instead, just as they did 70 years ago, they travel from Munich to Brescia on their own power. And even more impressively, they complete the journey on a single tank of fuel; then, as now, the engines were not only powerful but also efficient. The drivers and cars can encounter a wide variety of weather conditions en route to Brescia and during the event itself, but nothing can dampen the spirits of the drivers and cars alike. Whether they’re basking in 27 degrees Celsius on the Adriatic or shivering just above freezing in the snow and mist of Monte Terminillo, the teams experience everything the Italian climate can throw at them. And today, just as they did back then, they power to victory in sumptuous style.”…………………..

While the E30 M3 certainly was a successful race car in its own right, the 328 was no slouch. The list of wins is simply incredible. How about both class and overall wins at the Mille Miglia? Fifth overall at Le Mans? RAC Tourist Trophy? 100 class wins in one year? The 328 defined a history of success that BMW would continue after the war. More surprising is how successful the 328 was given that BMW engaged in little automobile racing prior to its construction. These successes were just about the equivalent of saying “You know, I think today I’ll start riding a bike” and then winning the Tour de France in the next month. While there are a few BMW models that exceed the value of the 328, I’d argue there is not a model which was more significant to establishing the brand. Quite simply, the 328 put BMW on the European map as a performance car company.

Now, as to value, that’s tough to judge. What do you compare it to? The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Spider? $500,000 or more, if you can find one. The Maserati 4CS-1500? Close to $1,000,000. Perhaps the Bugatti T55 Super Sport? That would set you back the best part of $2,000,000 plus. So, why the lack of value on the 328? At $350,000 this seems like a downright deal. Of course, the Bugatti, Maserati and Alfa have aching beauty that the 328 just can’t quite match, and consequently they’re more aesthetically desirable. However, even in comparison to some recent auctions, this 328 seems undervalued. The answer may lie in the lack of details of this auction; the quality of the restoration and the reason for it (crash?) would have to be fully sorted out before buying this car. Still, since none of you are actually going to buy this car stop worrying about how much it’s worth – just enjoy the view, appreciate the history, and before they’re all gone, go see one race at some vintage races!

German marques well represented in Watkins Glen.

Having just returned from my annual “business trip” to the Glenora Wine Cellars, formerly Zippo, U.S. Vintage Grand Prix and Racing Festival in Watkins Glen New York I thought it would be appropriate to give you a taste of some of the German metal out on display. In the next couple of days I’ll put up some posts of several of the German street and race cars that I came across for sale while cruising the garage and paddock. Over the course of the weekend I saw all the major marques we cover, except one, represented racing on the track and though there wasn’t one racing, an Opel GT was prowling the car corral. If you ever find yourself near the Fingerlakes region of New York early in September put this event on your calendar. It continues to be one of the largest vintage racing events in the country seeing between 400 and 500 of the finest and funkiest vintage and modern classic racers zooming around the birth place of road racing in America. Here is a  small look at a few of the German machines:

The fast included:

1. a legendary 2000 Audi R8 that turned the fastest time of all competitors with ease.
2. a pair of BMW CSL racers looking and sounding fantastic.
3. a pair of serious M powered Formula cars.
4. a new 2011 Mercedes SLS, parked next to an equally fast Ferrari 599, I overheard someone say both cars were for sale.
5. Speaking of fast and Ferrari, the Audi S4 pictured in this photo can be seen leading a Ferrari 355 challenge. When the rains came Sunday the Audi took control garnering a second place overall in its class race. Despite a fogged windshield, due to non functioning defroster, the Audi left the Ferrari far behind in a roar of turbo whine and quattro powered rain plumes.
6-7.Audi wasn’t the only German with a quest to beat up on Ferrari, note the badge on the rear of this mean sounding Mercedes 190E 2.3-16V. Unfortunately for this Merc it finished back in the pack unceremoniously being out driven by the likes of a 4 door Peugeot 505.

11. a BMW 323i with a bumper sticker describing how it feels being out on the track.

The doesn’t fit in any category:
14. a Vixen 21 BMW powered motorhome. These are extremely rare, 100 MPH RVs. Around 500 total were built and I suspect that combining the words high-speed and motorhome has resulted in far fewer surviving today. Ironically Jalopnik posted a picture of one just yesterday in a post about “Automotive Unicorns”. This one looked every bit like it came straight out of the movie Blade Runner. Very cool.
