1981 Mercedes-Benz 280E

I knew I had to write this one up as soon as I clicked through the link.  In my opinion the W123 platform is the peak of Mercedes’ restrained design that is still head turning and beautiful. It is truly hard to imagine any automaker coming up with such a tidy package these days, especially Mercedes, what with their current love of creases, creases and more creases. This is truly an elegant machine, built for cruising out to the country house with family or the beach house with the tennis instructor, either way you’d get there in comfort and style.

I’m a big fan of the Astral Silver paint on this extremely low mile example. It can appear to have a greenish tinge to it when in the right light, really a unique look that fits the vibe of the car perfectly. I hope the buyer lives in New York too because that plate looks just right. It’s a very minor detail that people often overlook on their otherwise obsessed over vehicles but I think a license plate can make or break the look of a car. In this case, it is very much make, thanks largely in part to the yellow euro lights.

Of course the interior is something to behold as well. It’s perfectly sparse, like a corner office in 1970s Germany. One of the things I like most about the W123 is that it’s a 70s design that carried over into the 80s. Sure I’m a fan of the W124 as well because they’re practically indestructible and it’s the first Mercedes I ever rode in but it doesn’t hold a candle to its predecessor. Years of beautiful Bavarian design influence is clearly evident in this car and it’s not hard to see why they’re collector items for people who simply love great design.

1981 Mercedes-Benz 280CE 4-speed manual – REVISIT

The 1981 Mercedes-Benz 280CE 4-speed manual we saw last October is back up for auction, not having met its reserve the last time around. If you aren’t particularly a diesel fan yet are intrigued by the durability of the W123, there are few better options than a Euro market CE coupe such as this.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

The mid 1980s would be a time of serious change for Mercedes-Benz. Not only would the new 190 debut, but the W124 E class would supplant the tried and true W123 series of sedans, coupes and estates. Few cars of the modern era have had such staying power with the motoring public. No matter where my travels take me, I usually see one of these cars knocking around on the streets, sometimes in rough condition. But no matter what you can throw at these cars, they can take it. Thirty years have now passed since the final production year of the W123. This 300CD for sale in California would be a great way to celebrate that milestone.

1981 Mercedes-Benz 300D

Ah the W123 Mercedes-Benz. Always a favorite here at GCFSB and a favorite, no doubt, of many of our readers. With about a decade of production and a number of engines and model variants to choose from, there’s almost one W123 for everyone. However, certain models, especially late model estates, have been gaining serious traction in the marketplace. I believe it’s a combination of fuel economy and nostalgia for the rock solid build quality of Mercedes-Benzes of yore that is driving this craze. However, in between, there are some often overlooked models that can still be had for enthusiasts on a budget. This 1981 300D for sale in California is one such example and it’s a nice one, having covered under 60,000 miles during its life and on offer for around the price of what a new Nissan Versa will run you.
