I always wonder why cars that are eco-friendly have to look so overtly different from a normal vehicle, oftentimes appearing as the automotive equivalent of a Birkenstock. Not being one to shout about my accomplishments, I like to do things a little bit more discreetly. In this case, if I was looking to gain a little bit more economy in my daily travels, I would choose a car like this 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300SD that is for sale in Florida. This vehicle comes to us by way of an estate sale. There’s not a whole lot of information to go on, but from the looks of things, this could turn out to be a very good buy.

One of my automotive guilty pleasures is a base spec version of any particular model of vehicle. I find something appealing about a vehicle in its purest form with minimal frills. Such is the case with this Mercedes-Benz 260SE for sale in Germany. The lowest form of W126 S Class the US received at the time was the 300SE, with a larger version of the M103 inline-6 that we see here. But while our cars came with everything from automatic gearboxes and climate control, this S class is equipped with cloth seats, hubcaps and a 5-speed manual gearbox. Seems out of place in a large luxury sedan such as this, but for some who lament the decline of three pedal cars, it makes this über cool.

2 CommentsOver the last couple weeks a bunch of Mercedes-Benz 560SELs with low mileage cropped up, prompting us to feature a few of them. There’s no doubt that these were one of the most loved S class generations of all time. Advanced for their time, they also offered plenty of classic Mercedes style and durability to go along with the package. While I am a big fan of the flagship Benz of the period, I’ve maintained that my choice would be a short wheelbase 300SE, with the 3.0 liter inline six. It won’t win any races, but it’s a smooth engine and with less length, a more manageable drive around town.

Comments closedLast month we featured two very clean Mercedes-Benz 560SELs, the pinnacle of the lineup for Mercedes-Benz at the time. Now another two low mileage examples have come out of the woodwork, for those pining for the good old days. The first 560SEL we’ll take a look at is exactly how I would want mine kitted out, in black over black leather. The W126 design has aged well, blending an even amount of classic and modern touches for a look that would be hard to be improved upon.

1 CommentThere’s an annex parking lot across from my apartment that houses the overflow from the local Mercedes-Benz dealer. I can’t hide my dismay at the lack of diversity in colors. Most vehicles are all silver, white, black or gray, with an odd reddish car mixed in. Look inside these new cars and there’s even less variety in terms of what you can trim out your car with, unless you take a dip into the very expensive personalized programs luxury manufacturers tend to offer. It seemed that manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, were a bit more adventurous years ago, with interesting cloth patterns and a wider range of leather hues on offer. This 420SEL is the first of its kind I’ve seen with a green leather interior, which is sure to raise an eyebrow with W126 fans.
