1992 Mercedes-Benz 400E

While it’s a model that’s rather forgotten to this day, the 400E was the car that brought the V8 engine into the mid-sized E-class sedan and one with which I have a personal relationship. My father bought a 1992 400E when I was in college and ran it for a while until the new MINIs appeared in early 2002 and he decided to bring back a little nostalgia in his life from his autocross years in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While I favored the 190E 2.6 my father previously drove, there were things to enjoy about the 400E, mainly the lusty eight-cylinder lump under the hood. This 400E for sale in California is looking rather crisp for a car with over 150,000 miles and offers a lot of brawn for the buck.

Pretty rare and well preserved 1992 MERCEDES BENZ 400E, 247K Kilometers (153K Miles). This is NOT a 500E, but pretty close – a much cheaper and almost as quick V8 powered W124 400E. 275HP 4.2L motor. It was originally sold in Vancouver, BC and it has had two owners. The last owner had it for 4 years. The car is currently registered in British Columbia. It drives great – it feels very powerful, very quiet and smooth. As it can be seen from the photographs, it is in amazingly well-preserved condition. No dents, scratches, etc. Equipped with all the usual options plus Rear Window Sunshade, Hi-Fi Sound with extended bass, 10 CD Becker CD changer, ASR Traction Control.

The interior is very clean, no cracks on the dash, no rips on the Leather seats, evidence of prior car phone installation. All electrical accessories work – power windows, mirrors, sunroof, rear window sun shade, ice cold AC, etc. New fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, caps and rotors, radiator, etc. Very recent tires and brakes. No Leaks.

A lot of people will compare the 400E as a bit of a bargain 500E, but truthfully they are two vastly different animals. Engineering and exclusivity are two qualities that separate the two. While 500E prices are steadily on the rise, the 400E is still very much attainable, hovering around 300E levels. Most examples you’ll find these days are clapped out, but occasionally, you’ll find a nice one like this. Considering its age, 150,000 miles isn’t really that much, provided it’s been taken care of. No mention of service records here, so it would be well worth carrying out a pre-purchase inspection. If it checks out and no gremlins are lurking around the bend, this is one serious piece of German machinery for the money.

I owned one of these a few years ago, what a fantastic car! I would disagree slightly with Paul in that it is close to the same power as a 500E, just built on the same line as the 300E rather than being sent to Porsche for some of the assembly but can be bought for relative pocket change and usually they are quite loaded up with features as compared to 300’s.

Here’s an article I wrote on it as part of a series I did http://www.curbsideclassic.com/uncategorized/coal-1992-mercedes-benz-400e-the-sleeper/ ( “COAL” stands for Cars of a Lifetime, this one is part of the 44 or so cars I’ve owned so far)
