1995 Mercedes-Benz S500

I don’t think anyone has ever really slept on the W140 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but it certainly seems in the past 18 months or so that people are getting wise to their collectability. We’ve seen some really nice S600 examples sell for big money and then even bigger money given low miles and outstanding condition. However, they made a ton of W140s and I’m willing to bet they’ll be way more on the market than the demand will command. This isn’t a 500E or 2.3-16v, then was the very mass produced range topper.

Naturally, when I see what looks like a clean W140, I have to take a look not only to see the condition, but what the owner is thinking of in terms of value. Unfortunately this owner is slightly overestimating the current value. More like slightly.

1997 Mercedes-Benz E420

This car sold for an undisclosed offer below the $8,950 Buy It Now on June 24, 2021.

With basically all the attention paid to the E55 AMG when talking about the W210 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, I think sometimes we forget that there was another V8 in the family. Well, technically two V8s with the aging M119 in the E420 and the new kid on the block M113 with the facelift E430. Today, we have one of the best early E420s I think I’ve come across in a long time, and even better, it is painted in Viola Metallic. This won’t last long.

1997 Mercedes-Benz CL420

I still think the C140 Mercedes-Benz hasn’t had its day yet. They are coming around for sure, but full blown “collector cars” they are not. I also think their time is coming and this example up for sale in The Netherlands is a good reason why. This 1997 CL420, an engine combo we didn’t get in the US, wears the rare Ruby Metallic paint job and the always cool 18″ Eltanin wheels that we also didn’t get. Inside, black leather with burl wood everywhere. Despite looking so good, this one has a surprising 92,000 miles on it. Doesn’t mean it is going to be cheap however.

2000 Mercedes-Benz E430

I think the days of V8s in mid-size sedans are numbered. With emissions regulations and fuel economy standards becoming more stringent as the years go on, you’ll be seeing smaller and smaller displacement engines along with hybrid systems becoming the norm in almost every car except the ultra-high performance models. Look right now, the current Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup lacks a V8 until you get to the top of the range E63 AMG, which starts at $110,000. Even ten years ago, you could get your E500 with a 5.0 V8 and call it a day. Not anymore, two 2.0L inline-fours and an 3.0L inline-six are what awaits your down payment. Buyers don’t really care, as long as the car looks good and the lease numbers and performance are good, sign ’em up.

So rewind 20 years and head back to the new Millennium where the E-Class lineup was simple. There was the 3.2L V6 E320, 4.3L V8 E430, and 5.4L V8 E55 AMG. Done. The buyers for E320s and E55s were very different people, as the E320 was $47,000, while the E55 was a significant amount more at $72,000. Turns out its not cheap to pay a bunch of Germans in a small town to hand-assemble a car. So what about the E430? $53,000. Suddenly that extra six grand seems like a worthwhile upgrade over the E320. You had more than respectable numbers at the time with 275 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque. Still, every time you saw an E55, which lets be honest probably never because of the extremely low production numbers, you wanted those 18″ Monoblocks and special body kit. Now that is 20 years later, does it still make sense to buy an E430? I think so, especially this one.

Ever hear the saying “Buy the seller, not the car”? I know that might be difficult sometimes given the circumstances of this hobby we indulge in, but I can get on board with it. Sometimes you think you’ve found the right car, then you show up and it has an empty french fry box from McDonalds with a coupon for a free ice cream cone that expired in 2003. You try to look past it, but you know maybe this wasn’t the most well looked after example that is out there. Then on that rare occasion, you’ll bump into an owner that is absolutely fanatic about their car and suddenly everything makes sense in the world. Today, we have one of those owners.

This 1997 Mercedes-Benz S500 up for sale in New York has everything. All the maintenance done, all the service records, low miles, photos that show every angle, the window sticker, everything. This person loves their car and actually took more than two seconds to make the ad to sell it. Walk me with in this rare moment where you can actually enjoy seeing a for sale ad.
