Strong e28 BMW M5 For Sale in New Mexico

Bruce alerted me that his e28 M5 for was going up for sale and naturally I asked if I could post it here as well; being an e28 fanatic myself. Check out his great looking example on Autotrader for $10K:

1988 BMW e28 M5 For Sale1988 BMW e28 M5 For Sale1988 BMW e28 M5 For Sale European Headers

quote from seller’s listing:

The 1988 M5 has been often referred to as the finest sports sedan ever built. This car was hand made with approximately 1370 brought to the USA. This car is incredible durable and reliable even though it is a very sophisticated machine. It has an engine that sounds like a formula racecar and the handling of this car makes this car a blast to drive. I have owned the car for 3 yrs having purchased this from a good friend who had the car in his family since new. It has always been very well maintained. Maintenance records are available since 1998. When I purchased it I invested $9k to have anything that needed repair or service taken care of. The front and rear ends are essential new. The rear suspension was changed to blistein kit (better and more durable than original self leveling system). The engine has European racing headers and a custom exhaust. The motor also has a high performance chip. The front windshield has a crack, the electric headrests are not working and the odometer is also not working. The interior is all original with some cracking of the seats (no tears) even the carpet is original. This is a car that can be driven daily or can be kept as a classic investment. I am selling the car because I have built a house in Santa Fe NM that is a mile down a dirt road and I do not want to subject the car to that wear and tear. I have over $19k invested in this car but will sell to appreciating new buyer for $10k

Personally, I think the e28 M5’s are great value right now considering the skyrocketing prices of e30 M3’s of similar vintage and collectability. This example isn’t perfect, but the service history is what makes this car desirable to me ($9K!) This isn’t an inexpensive car to maintain and many have been neglected. This one hasn’t and the upgrades are very tasteful and complimentary.

Good luck on the sale Bruce!

1988 BMW e28 M5: Possible Project Car?

The prices of e28 M5’s had been seeing a healthy increase. Some of the examples I’ve posted recently have been over $20k. This 1988 BMW M5 is on eBay with a buy-it-now of only $13k:

quote from seller’s eBayMotors listing:

COLLECTABLE ITEM , 5TH M5 WITH BLACK /BLACK WHICH INTER COUNTRY IN 1988. IN A SHOW ROOM CONDITION. AND IT IS READY TO SHIP AWAY.

Obviously this one has a lot more miles than most cars I post on here. And I don’t know what showroom they’ve been hanging out in, but this car clearly isn’t that condition. Despite the fact that this car could’ve really benefited from a detail before shooting pics, the car looks complete and pretty good shape. If the motor was sound, this could be a pretty cool project car considering the asking. Which way would you go: fix it up as a nice driver or maybe enjoy as a weekend track toy?

Many thanks to Neil for sending this my way!

2000 BMW e39 M5 For Sale with only 4k Miles!

Let me start by saying, I am not a fan of the most recent 5 series platform. The e60 is just plain ugly compared to the e39. I have no doubt the V10 featuring 500hp is nothing short of breathtaking, but when you’re prepared to put down nearly $90k for a brand new one, but not in love with the shape, what options are you left with? How about saving $40k and buying a nearly new M5 of the previous generation?

2000 BMW M5 For Sale on eBayMotors:

quote from seller’s listing:

The ultimate expression of the ultimate driving machine. There isn’t a magazine on the planet that didn’t fall head over heels when the E39 debuted in 1998. the combination of power, handling, comfort, braking and overall drivability led to review after review naming the M5 the best car in the world at any price and a modern classic. Finding examples with well over 100,000 miles is commonplace; finding one with 3,059 miles like this one is a lot tougher. Who would own such a machine and not use it? BMW themselves, that’s who—the car sat garaged in the Greer, SC facility and was used by executives who flew over from Germany. It’s one of the lowest mileage M5’s on the planet, it’s perfect and it’s ready to roll.

We aren’t kidding about the critical acclaim. Here’s a sampling of quotes:

The 2000 BMW M5 is the king of all performance sedans, a classic for the ages.

Edmunds.com

“The fastest production sedan on the planet.”

Road and Track, March 2000

“… The M5 is as close to faultless as any car I’ve driven. Set the bar as high as you like, this thing will clear it. Unbelievable!

Jeff Karr – Motor Trend

“… The best and most consistently enjoyable sport sedan the world has ever known.”

Motor Trend, March 2000

“On the track, the M5 is hunkered down and grips the asphalt with confidence and composure. The instant-on electronic throttle response and the precise manual gearbox will bring a smile to any driver.”

Road and Track, March 2000

“For people who love cars, the M5 is quite simply the most desirable sedan in the world at any price. What more can we say?”
Car and Driver, March 2000

“Without sounding like a broken record, this is the one car to beat, faster, sharper, not to mention safer, and more luxurious then anything on the market, the best sports sedan in the world then, the best sports sedan now, and maybe even forever.”
Motor Week

“The new BMW M5 is simply the best.”
European Car, June 2000

There are no blemishes anywhere on the exterior of the car, just as you’d expect a garaged 2,700 mile car to appear. Tire tread is better than 90% and the wheels are perfect. There are no needs, no problems and no shortcomings as you do a walk around. The car is perfect.

The same goes for the interior. The leather seats are immaculate with virtually no evidence of wear, and they’re the only parts that show any use at all. The stereo is loud and crisp, the multifunction display in the dash, the gauges, all lights and all switchgear work exactly as new.

I’m just saying, if my lotto ticked gets punched this week, I’d take this over the newest version. If I remain mortal without the winnings, I might still think a well looked after used e39 M5 might be in the cards considering they now hover in the low 20’s for asking price.

1988 BMW e28 M5 For Sale with only 41k Miles!

I saw this very low miles and original example on Roadfly today. Every time I see a really nice one, I envision how nice my e28 535i would be with a stick and nearly 300hp!

Take a look at this 1988 BMW M5 For Sale on Roadfly:

quote from seller’s listing:

VERY LOW MILES. Beautiful example of the Rare 1988 E28 M5. Only a small number were built and only a small number remain. You are not likely to find a better example of this M5. Excellent Condition. Original. Unmodified. Gloss Black. Excellent Interior. Factory BBS Wheels. Yokohama AVS tires. Custom M5 logo mats.

In the U.S., the e28 M5 really is more rare than the e30 M3. Can you imagine what a 44k mile e30 M3 would have for an asking?!

1991 BMW e34 M5 For Sale in Red with 47k Miles

Stellar mileage on this very nice looking 1991 BMW M5 listed on eBayMotors:

quote from seller’s eBayMotors listing:

I am selling this car with a heavy heart. My first born is due to arrive on earth in March and so this is the only reason I am selling this car. Too many toys and this one is going.

About:
This is a 1991 E34 M5 US Model with 47,962 original miles to chassis and engine with matching numbers(the mileage will go up by a few miles as I drive it to keep it fresh). This car has not been modified in any way; it is one hundred percent stock down to the radio. There is no rust on this car. In very good condition with low miles.

For the most part the pictures show a great looking original car. The engine compartment could use some detailing, but aside from that, it looks really sharp in that red on light tan leather. I’d hope a car like this would have some records, but the ad doesn’t mention any specifically. But then the seller states right in the auction description that his reserve is only $17k. If a PPI checked out, I’d easily overlook that omission for a car with such low miles!

Black e28 BMW M5 For Sale with Only 44k Miles!

Here’s another beautiful e28 M5 for sale, and this one has only covered 44k miles!

1988 BMW e28 M5 For Sale on Roadfly

quote from seller’s listing on Roadfly:

This is an Excellent example of the legendary 1988 M5. Original, Unmodified, Unaltered. 41,000 miles. Excellent Condition inside and out. Zaino High Gloss Polish. Excellent Interior, well-nourished. Factory Recaro Seats, Custom Mats, Factory Alloy Wheels, Yokohama Tires.

So with the asking of $25k, has the e28 piggybacked the recent swing in values the e30 M3 now commands? And correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure there were a lot less e28 M5’s imported compared to the e30.

1988 BMW M5 – Rare Black on Black For Sale

Amongst e28 M5 enthusiasts in North America, this color combo is the most sought after as nearly all of them came with black on tan. Here’s a chance to own one that’s for sale right in my backyard of Portland, Oregon.

1988 BMW M5 – Rare Black on Black on Portland Craigslist for $19k

quote from seller’s Craigslist post:

It is one of the 22 USA spec cars that came with the black buffalo hide interior.

Except for a newer clutch the engine, trans and diff are original. It does have new driveshaft and half-shafts. New upper/lower control arms with 750 bushings. The car has 139,000 miles on it but, as you see from the pictures, it looks nearly new.

Many parts and trim pieces have been replaced to improve the appearance. It has a complete tool kit of course. I have many other spare parts such as brake pads, original BMW cloth seat covers (I think they sold them to throw over your seats to protect the leather if you got dirty while you were out) and stock mud flaps (never installed, great for protecting the body but just to ugly)

Major changes from stock:

1) Euro Headlight conversion (I still have the original lights and grills)
2) Euro headers installed and new exhaust, including cats (it is pretty loud)
3) Limited edition Momo steering wheel released in the late 80’s for the M5/M6 (still have stock wheel)
4) 540 rear brake conversion
5) 17” wheels w/ Goodyear GS-D3 (Original wheels stored safely in garage, with tires)
6) J. Conforti chip upgrade

Previous owner installed Dinan suspension (springs, shocks, sway bars) cam gear and K&N air filter. I do have all the Stock suspension parts and air box

Check out more pictures of this 1988 BMW M5 Black on Black.

I wish my e28 was as clean as this car! The seats are perfect, mechanically has all the ‘right’ upgrades, and even all the stock parts are included.

Chuck submitted his car to be posted here, so if you have questions, leave a comment! If you have a car that needs to listed here, drop me an email!

Good luck with the sale Chuck!

Silver BMW e39 M5 For Sale: Wow, When Did e39 M5 Prices Become This Attractive?!

I’ve driven my buddy Clayton’s e39 540i/6 a few times, and it never fails to impress. I can only imagine what the M5 delivers with a full hundred more horses and M tuning to suspension, transmission, and interior. Well maybe I can imagine as prices for low mileage examples are turning up in the low 20’s. What happened to the market for these?!

Here’s one that came up on Roadfly tonight, and even includes BBS RC wheels!

quote from listing on Roadfly:

Immaculate 2000 M5. Nice BBS wheels (All Ms are supposed to have BBS wheels right!), rare and extremely beautiful Anthracite gray exterior, black with silver inserts on seats and doors. Extended leather option includes leather on door uppers, dash and suede headliner. New dash OBC. Pirelli Pzero Rossos. Complete service history/records. BMWCCA member owned. $22,500 obo.

I’m going to take the next few posts to talk about other modern-classic BMW’s that are showing amazing value recently. With the suddenly gas-conscious American market, some models are looking very attractive to the enthusiast shopper hoping to maximize their budget and score the ride of their dreams.

If this seems like the kind of blog that you’d love regular updates on, considering subscribing via email, blog reader, and even Twitter!

1991 BMW e34 M5 in Alpine White

Alpine white on black leather. Does it get any better on an M car than this? I don’t think so either. This 1991 e34 M5 looks very clean for 104k miles, and if the documentation of upkeep holds up, $11k sounds like an absolute bargain for this legendary modern classic.

Listing on Roadfly for this 1991 BMW M5 in Alpine White in MA:

quote from Roadfly listing:

1991 BMW M5 The e34 M5 was a very special car. Each was hand built by a team of two skilled craftsmen. This one has been Garaged kept and is in excellent shape. It has 109K Miles. It is white with black leather interior. The car has upgraded Dinan supension, Dinan chip and cam gears. Absolutely Immaculate Interior and All power functions operational. A/C blows Strong and Cold. Extensive service history.

There are a lot of if’s when it comes to e34 M5’s, and there is homework that must be done for this car. But on the other hand, it wasn’t too long ago that cream puff e34 M5’s were in the $18-25k range. If it took a few thousand to get this car into really sharp condition, you’d still be ahead of the game.

1993 BMW e34 M5 For Sale: A 59k Mile Steal!

A black e34 M5 for $19k with 59k miles… What’s the catch?

Update 9.15.08: – Now ad $17.5k. Links updated.

1993 BMW e34 M5 For Sale on Roadfly:

1993 BMW e34 M5 For Sale in Black

quote from Roadfly listing:

Low mileage, well-maintained M5. Drivetrain is stock except for DINAN chip and UUC short shift kit. Near new Michelin Pilot tires and Rondel wheels ( 5 ). New BMW OEM catalytic converters. All fluids changed within last 6 months. Interior and exterior are 8/9 out of 10. Price is firm. Serious inquiries only, please.

The only thing I take issue with are the aftermarket rims, which are probably inferior to the OEM originals. If this is in fact a clean survivor with some records, $19k sounds like a steal to me considering I’ve seen comparable examples in the low to mid 20’s more often than not.
